Bucktail boys edge CMVT by just three points in senior night win

KEVIN RAUCH/Special to the Sun-Gazette Aidan Ditty of Bucktail used his speed and shooting to help lift Bucktail past CMVT in boys basketball on Monday, 49-46.

FARWELL — The Bucktail boys basketball team improved to 7-12 on senior night 2026 moments after honoring senior Nate Steele just before tip-off in a 49-46 win over CMVT on Monday evening.

It was one of those games that were nearly perfect in all aspects for a young Bucks team whose better days are over the next few years. On this night, in front of a packed home crowd already buzzing from watching the girls win their senior night match-up, every player on the home team had at least one highlight style play that helped to push their team to the win.

Aidan Ditty had the first big play as the Bucks looked to keep pace with a Rams team that jumped out to a quick lead.

Ditty took a pass with a second on the clock as the first quarter came to an end and drained a three-point shot as he was tackled to the ground, drawing the foul. Ditty didn’t complete the four-point play as he missed the foul shot, but the obvious momentum boost watched as he would lead all scorers on the night with a game high 19 points.

Gavin Pick added 13 points as his control of the ball on almost every key play was something the Rams just couldn’t counter.

KEVIN RAUCH/Special to the Sun-Gazette Bucktail senior Nate Steele is honored prior to Monday's senior night against CMVT with his parents Brenda and Joseph Donges.

“That was fun, it really was fun, great defense, great effort, just a team victory” said Bucktail coach Travis Fantaskey. “Everybody pitched in one way or the other, Aidan had an outstanding game, but defensively we were sharper, quicker, that’s how I told these guys all year that we are capable of playing.”

CMVT’s Andrew Molick had a career game of his own as he continued to pull his team back within one possession throughout the contest. Still, no matter what Molick threw at his opponents, the Bucks answered in dramatic fashion.

Jacob Meitzel hit a 3-pointer with three minutes left in the game, pulling his team within two at 46-44 as the Rams trailed by just a point, 47-46, with 1:17 left in the fourth quarter. With 18 seconds left, Ditty pushed the game back to 48-46.

On their inbounds pass a scramble occurred off of a long pass attempt leaving Molick open underneath his rim, but as the shot left his hands Corbin Pentz smacked the ball away from behind, not allowing the shot to be completed with a monstrous block. A Teagan Stone foul-shot set the score at 49-46 in what may just have been the Bucks most exciting game all year.

The Bucks will be home again on Tuesday when they host West Branch.
