CM’s Hosley wins district title in 100 fly in high school swimming

STATE COLLEGE — Central Mountain junior Gabriella Hosley claims gold at the District 6 Class AAA swimming championships with a victory in the 100 fly. The district meet was held at Penn State and the Wildcats took second overall in the girls race.
In the 100 fly, Hosley was seeded second and was a late scratch in the meet. She led the most of the way, hit the third wall and ran away with it. Her time was 1:02.30, which while not what she wanted, was good enough for gold and a trip to Bucknell for the PIAA Class AAA championships.
“It was a great weekend for the Central Mountain Wildcats,” Central Mountain coach Carol Matheney said.
The Wildcats’ 200 medley relay team of Sloane Coakley, Hosley, Lily McWilliams and Kaylie McCloskey took second and dropped five seconds for a time of 2:03.92. On the boys side, the team of Christian Briggs, Che McAllister, Rhys Swift and Neil Kaluzny swam a 1:50.89 to seal a third-place medal.
Kaulzny (fourth), McAllister (fifth) and Holden Long (sixth) took medal spots in the boys 200 free. Swift was a fourth-place finisher in the 50 free as he dropped time and Briggs, while battling the flu, took fifth in the 200 IM.
The Central Mountain girls team had four reach the podium in the 50 free with Anna Stahl taking sixth, McWilliams taking seventh, Coakley taking ninth and McCloskey finishing fifth. Brayden Packer, Raider Newcomer and Jame Remold competed in the boys race.
In the 200 free relay, the CM girls team which consisted of McCloskey, Stahl, McWilliams and Hosley dropped 5.5 seconds and came in second in 1:51.68 while the boys team of Remold, Briggs, McAllister and Calumny swam good enough to take bronze.
McCloskey swam. Personal best time of 1:01.45 in the 100 free and came in sixth.
In the 500 free on the girls side, Central Mountain sophomore Erin Packer swam a sixth-place finish and on the boys side, Swift took fourth with a time of 5:30.59, dropping 11 seconds off his seeded time entering districts.
Coakley had a five-second drop in the 100 back and took fifth by swimming a 1:08.92 and sophomore Zoe McElroy lowered her time by almost a second with a 1:13.96.
In the 100 breast, Hosley was seeded second and swam a time of 1:10.43 to take home a silver medal. She dropped almost a second in the event as well. On the boys side, McAllister (1:09.12) dropped time and took seventh. Rhine was eighth with a time of 1:10.66.
The girls 400 free relay saw the team of McElroy, Coakley, Stahl and Packer swim a 4:16.58 to take home a third-place medal and drop just over five seconds in the event. The boys team of Packer, Log, Swift and Rhine took second in 3:47.99 and dropped an impressive 11 seconds.
