Lewisburg coach Mason Wuederman and his Green Dragon swimmers had high expectations heading into Saturday’s Williamsport Invitational. The Green Dragons have plenty of talented swimmers on the roster on both the girls and boys sides, and knew they could compete with most schools.
Through majority of Saturday’s invitational, the Green Dragon girls were in the lead in the team points race. But late in the afternoon, Danville and Bloomsburg eventually pulled ahead as Lewisburg finished third in a very tight team race with the Ironmen (295 points), Bloomsburg (267), Lewisburg (246) and Williamsport (231).
Lewisburg saw a total of six swimmers on Saturday finish fifth or better, including a pair of swimmers who took two first-place finishes, to lead Lewisburg’s outstanding efforts.
Morgan Shannon won both the 200 free and 500 free while Emma Hopkinson won the 50 free and 100 free. It was key for the Green Dragons.
“I mean we had pretty high expectations coming in, we knew we could compete with them. We were leading until about three quarters of the way through on the girls side, last couple of events got away from us,” Wuederman said. “Overall I’m very happy with that. The boys had some really solid swims, both Colin (Shannon) and Blake (Gulden-Luthi) dropped times in their events, so I’m looking forward to how they perform in districts.”

Morgan Shannon won the 500 free with a time of 5:24.54 as she cruised in the race and pulled away late and separated herself from the field. Samantha Fagan of Bloomsburg took second in 5:42.91. In the 200 free, she would win with a time of 2:00.11 and won by five seconds over Fagan, who swam a 2:05.36 and Cleo Hummel of Danville (2:06.64), who finished third.
In addition to Morgan Shannon winning two events, her brother Colin won the 500 free on the boys side and took third in the 200 free.
“Obviously they feed off each other a lot. At most meets they’re cheering for each to her, so they know how to pace each other very well,” Wuederman said. “It’s sibling thing, it runs in their family with their older sister Kimmy, too. They all swam same events, they feed off each other. It’s great to see.”
In the 100 free, Hopkinson got in control after the first 50 yards and pulled away from Williamsport’s Aviya Halstead and Danville’s Zoe Czech. Hopkinson finished in 54.81 to win the event as Athens’ Evelyn Panek was second (57.02) and Halstead was third (57.51). Hopkinson won the 50 free in 25.04 as Athens’ Evelyn Panek was second in 25.75 and Jersey Shore’s Emily Shemory took third in 26.00.
“Emma was fantastic today. She’s been struggling mentally the last month or so, adding time every meet. So, there’s maybe some self-doubt creeping in, so I think this meet will go a long way for her mentally going into districts,” Wuderman said. “Definitely some good momentum to have.”

Driver took third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:24.78 as she swam well. The only swimmers ahead of her were Tunkhannock’s Kaitlyn Keown (2:20.71) and winner Lucy Diehl of Bloomsburg (2:19.37).
“Claire (Driver) was beating herself up a bit after today. We’re still training her pretty hard and we’re looking forward to tapering her to see how much time she can drop at districts,” Wuederman said. “I’m very confident with her heading into districts too. She’ll be in a great spot with the 200 IM, 100 breast, whatever she swims.”
The Green Dragons saw Jillian Muchler claim two top-5 finishes as well with a second-place finish in the 100 back and fifth in the 100 fly. Blake Gulden-Luthi took fourth in the 100 breast.
