Local roundup: Lycoming’s Wagner, Zeigler, Crum all qualify for Region II tournament in wrestling

Junior 165-pounder Kaiden Wagner, a Lewisburg graduate, won the Region II Qualifier title and both junior 174-pounder Nolen Zeigler and senior 184-pounder Eli Crum each qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships with top-three finishes to help the Lycoming College wrestling team finish third in the field of 20 teams at Glazer Arena.

The trio of Wagner, Zeigler and Crum will get set for the two-day NCAA Division III Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, starting on Friday, March 13.

On Saturday, the Warriors leapt over 25th-ranked RIT and St. John Fisher in the team scores, finishing with 108, behind only eighth-ranked Stevens (147.5) and Ithaca.

Junior 133-pounder Bobby Gardner (a South Williamsport graduate) and junior 197-pounder Ivan Neal each finished fourth and senior heavyweight Michael Sipps (a Cowanesque Valley graduate) took sixth.

Wagner, ranked eighth by the NWCA, defeated Ryley Monica at 165 pounds, 8-3, in the semifinal to clinch his second straight berth at the NCAA Championships and beat Carter Davis of Penn College, by major decision, 8-0, in the final.

Zeigler, ranked 11th by the NWCA, earned his bid to nationals with a 5-4 win over RIT’s Jack Lamson in the semifinals, but he fell to eighth-ranked Konrad Parker of Ithaca, 11-6, in the final.

Crum was just edged out in the semifinals in sudden victory, 4-1, to Oneonta’s Jack Ryan, but he rebounded by getting a third-period takedown in the final minute of the match to beat Stevens’ Noah MacIlroy, 5-4, and reach the third-place match for the second year in a row. He fell behind Ithaca’s Xavier Pommels by giving up a takedown, but he got a reversal, a two-point near fall, a four-point near fall and then a pin with three seconds left in the first period to secure his first trip to nationals.

For the first time in program history, Penn College will send three wrestlers to the NCAA Division III Championships as Kaden Ware, Carter Davis, and Nick Woodruff punched their tickets to nationals as a result of their top three Region 2 finishes on Saturday.

Davis finished runner-up at 165 pounds, while Ware (141) and Woodruff (197) placed third.

After going 2-0 during Friday’s opening rounds at Ithaca College, Davis, who placed fourth at last year’s regional, split on Saturday, winning with a major decision in the semifinals before falling in the finale and placing second.

Woodruff, who finished sixth a year ago, also was 2-0 on Friday and reached the semis, where he lost by decision before coming back with a pair of wins by decision to complete a 3-1 tournament.

Ware opened 2-1 on Friday and went into the consolation round, then battled back with a win by technical fall and two decisions to finish 5-1 and earn his spot at nationals.

David M’Balla went 4-1 on Friday at 157 and also went into Saturday’s consolation round five, before dropping a major decision and then taking a medical forfeit in his last bout to finish 4-2.

Harris Keares, 1-2 at 125; Blake Dergham, 2-2 at 133; Chase Shaner, 0-2 at 149; Isaac Cory, 1-2 at 174; Gavin Gomes, 0-2 at 184; and Nic Brotzman, 1-2 at 285 were all eliminated from the tournament Friday.

• Junior Alex Halbert spun 5.0 scoreless innings and senior shortstop Sean Perkins launched his first home run of the season to lead the Lycoming College baseball team to a 7-0 victory in the opener of a doubleheader against Hilbert College, before the Hawks overcame a four-hit game and three-run homer from senior Brody Lindsey for a 6-3 victory in the nightcap at Brandon Park.

Lycoming (4-3) turned three double plays and earned their second shutout victory of the season in the home opener, before Hilbert (1-3) turned back numerous Warrior threats to take the second contest.

In the opener, the Warriors took control right away. After a twin killing ended a Hilbert threat in the top of the first, the first two Lycoming hitters walked, before an errant throw scored senior Nick Reeder, a Montoursville graduate, for the first run of the game. Two batters later, Perkins turned on a hanging breaking ball and deposited it over the left field fence for a two-run shot, giving the Warriors a 3-0 lead after the opening frame.

• The Lock Haven softball team had a 2-0 day in West Virginia after taking down Concord, 10-3, and King (Tenn.), 3-0, in a non-conference doubleheader. With the sweep, Lock Haven improved to 3-1 on the young season.

Lock Haven erased a three-run deficit with a seven-inning surge to down Concord 10-3 in the opening game of the day.

The Bald Eagles trailed after Concord plated three runs in the second inning, but Lock Haven answered with a three-run fourth, three more in the sixth and a four-run seventh to pull away decisively. Evelyn Osborne delivered the decisive blow in the seventh, a three-run home run to left field that broke the game open at 10-2.

Maci Brodzina was equally productive from the three-hole, going 2-for-3 with two walks

The Mansfield softball team (1-1) traveled to compete in the Triangle Classic Tournament, with the games being split, beating SHa University, 5-1, before losing to Emory & Henry, 9-0.

The Mounties were able to get a quick start from Alex Reisinger hitting a single, allowing Paige Reichard and Aubrey Reinert to score. Both teams had quick innings up until the third at bat for the Mountaineers.

Emma Wonsick was able to get on base due to a Shaw error, giving Emma Maurer, Sarah Shupp and Reichard to all score.

• Sophomore Cesar Carmona-Felipe notched three goals to lead the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team as it fell to Allegheny College, 20-4, in non-conference action. Carmona-Felipe also added an assist and a caused turnover in the game, while freshman Garis Tocco also scored for the Warriors (0-4 overall).

Freshman Connor Thompson led the Warriors with four groundballs and two caused turnovers and sophomore James Hall-Melnychuck also added two caused turnovers.

Tocco scored Lycoming’s first goal midway through the first quarter, while Carmona-Felipe scored his first goal with 2:00 left in the first quarter. He added a goal each in the third and fourth quarters.

• Senior Riley Block posted 10 goals and four assists to set the school-record of 14 points to lead the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team to a 17-2 rout of Wilson College.

Block’s effort surpassed a 13-point output from Alexa Baldwin on March 2, 2024, leading Lycoming (1-2) to their first victory of the season.

Freshman Molly Guifre started the scoring 90 seconds in the contest when she scored on a free-position shot to give the Warriors their first lead of the campaign. Block then began her scoring spree with a goal 57 seconds later. After Wilson’s Sadie Fike scored with 6:45 left in the first period, freshman Julia Dammes answered 29 seconds later. Dammes added another goal and sophomore Summer Emlet also pocketed a goal, giving Lycoming a 5-1 lead after one period.

Will Ehret broke a 14-14 deadlock, with a pair of scores in the final 3:30, to lift Penn College to a 16-14 win over Misericordia in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game Saturday. The Wildcats improved to 4-1, while the Cougars fell to 1-3.

Penn College held a 14-10 advantage entering the final quarter, but Misericordia erased its deficit with four-straight scores in the opening 10 minutes of the quarter to tie the game at 14 with 5:35 left. The Wildcats defense killed a man-down situation with 4:30 left to spark the team’s late run.

Owen Kupsey, Eliot Dotson, and Aidan McFalls scored consecutive goals to end the first to give PCT a 6-2 lead. After the Cougars scored back-to-back goals to cut into PCT’s lead, 7-6, with 4:25 left in the second quarter the Wildcats responded with goals from Elliot Dotson and Aidan McFalls to lead 9-6 at the break before Penn College outscored Misericordia 5-4 in the third.

Will Hopkins finished a Sean Berrigan feed for the go-ahead goal with 2:53 to play, and defenseman Will Pickering broke up a pass on Lehigh’s final possession to lift the Bucknell men’s lacrosse team to a frantic 12-11 win over Lehigh on Saturday at the Ulrich Sports Complex.

The Bison improved to 5-1 overall with a win on the opening day of Patriot League play. It was a wild one, as Bucknell built a 7-3 lead only to fall behind 9-7 before rallying late. The game featured six goals in the final 7:22, with Bucknell scoring four of those.

Berrigan, Luke Brunner, and Sean Murray all scored tying goals in that final stretch, and then after a big faceoff win from Colin McLoy, Hopkins cut down the left channel and scored off Berrigan’s pass for what proved to be the winning tally.

• The Lock Haven men’s indoor track and field team was loaded with strong performances on day one of the 2025-26 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at Lehigh.

Eric Zalar earned a silver medal and All-PSAC honors in the Weight Throw. Zalar’s throw of 65-7.5 (20.00m) reached an NCAA Division II provisional mark.

Jakob Rager, Sam Wible, Anden Atkins and Gavin Furey received All-PSAC honors and second place in the Distance Medley. The quartet finished the race in 10:09.82.

Montoursville graduate Josiah Schans broke the Lock Haven 60m Hurdles record for the fourth straight week. Schans qualified for Sunday’s finals by finishing with the fastest time of 7.97. Matt Reinard will also see tomorrow’s finals. Reinard ran an 8.37.

On the women’s side, Lock Haven’s distance medley team of Nicole Carroll, Natalie Gentzel, Elizabeth Shultz and Kaydence Strange. The quartet earned a fourth-place finish with a time of 12:18.06. It was the third-best distance medley time in Lock Haven Women’s Indoor Track & Field history.

Samantha Trench qualified for Sunday’s 60-meter hurdles finals. Trench completed the event in 9.15. Makayla Grace Weber finished 21st in the same event with a 9.57 finish.

Alexanne Fite took 13th place in the 400m by finishing in 1:00.46.

Mansfield was led by Marcus Quaker, who started out the day strong for, placing second in the heptathlon 60-meter dash, at 7.15 seconds. Quaker continued his day in the heptathlon long jump with a season best of 6.42 meters. He then took on the heptathlon shot put, throwing 11.57 meters.
