Warrior Run has plenty of stars eyeing podium at South Sectional

RALPH WILSON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Warrior Run’s Reagan Milheim has his hand raised after winning a match at last year’s Northeast Class AA Regional tournament at Williamsport. Milheim is one of a number of Warrior Run standouts eyeing sectional gold today in Southern Columbia.

There’s plenty of good weights to keep an eye on at the South Sectional title today. That includes numerous with multiple state-ranked wrestlers looking to win gold medals as the postseason gets underway for individual wrestlers.

A breakdown of the South Sectional tournament by weight today at Southern Columbia. All state rankings are rankings entering Friday.

107 POUNDS

This field is a small one with only four wrestlers battling it out. Mifflinburg’s Collin Roman (23-12) faces Shamokin’s Ashton Hughes (12-14) and Lewisburg’s Colton Lyons (12-16) competes with Warrior Run’s Kael Majcher (18-12).

The 107 bracket is an interesting one in that of the four wrestlers, three are freshmen and the other is only a sophomore.

FRANK DIMON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Warrior Run’s Chase Wirnsberger tries to escape Mifflinburg’s Jack Gramly during this year’s District 4 Duals tournament. Wirnsberger and Gramly could meet up again at the South Sectional in the 127-pound finals if both win out. Wirnsberger entered Friday ranked No. 16 in the state while Gramly entered ranked No. 19.

114 POUNDS

Rowan Humphrey is ranked No. 13 in the state at 114 and is the top wrestler in the field with a 33-4 record. Humphrey, a Penn College commit, reached 100 wins for his career recently as he’s at 107. He won last year’s South Sectional title and is looking to make it back-to-back titles. Humphrey has won 22 matches this year by pin as well.

Humphrey faces Tyler Walburn of Warrior Run. In the other quarterfinals, Milton’s Gavin Batman wrestles Line Mountain’s Landis Keefer, Shamokin’s Xavier Carr wrestles Mifflinburg’s Landen Shemory and Lewisburg’s Fynn Oberdorf wrestles Midd-West’s Mason Kerstetter.

Humphrey is the wrestler to beat at 114 and he’s proven that not many are able to do that.

121 POUNDS

Speaking of wrestlers who have proven to be tough to beat, say hello to Line Mountain’s Brock Rothermel. The Eagle is 34-4 as a junior this year and is the No. 1-ranked wrestler in Class AA at 121 in Pennsylvania. Rothermel, who will wrestle at Pittsburgh, is a two-time sectional champion, two-time district champion and two-time regional champion.

He’s never lost more than four bouts in a single-season as he went 42-4 as a freshman, 38-3 as a sophomore and is currently 34-4.

Everyone in 121 knows they’ll need to wrestle at their absolute best if they wanna try beating Rothermel.

Mifflinburg’s Griffin Walls (29-10) is seeded second as a freshman and faces either Anthony Vazquez of Lewisburg or Warrior Run’s Emmett Ranck.

Rothermel will face either Shamokin’s Casey Alleman or Danville’s Kayvion Seabrook. Southern’s Liam Gray (25-13) wrestles Milton’s Bryson Walter and Mount Carmel’s Brayden Mirarck (19-16) wrestles Midd-West’s Max Trawitz.

127 POUNDS

This bracket has a potential for an outstanding final if the top two seeded wrestlers win out, which is more likely to happen than not. Warrior Run’s Chase Wirnsberger (28-10), a sophomore, is the top seed and is ranked No. 16 in the state while Mifflinburg’s Jack Gramly, a senior (30-11) is seeded two and is ranked No. 19 in the state.

A matchup of top-20 wrestlers for the sectional title? Who wouldn’t want to watch that unfold if they win out.

Wirnsberger will face either Southern’s Aiden Brown or Braxton Kemper of Shamokin and Gramley gets either Lewisburg’s Bently Chappell or Milton’s Wyatte Wolfgang.

The other quarterfinals will see Line Mountain’s Ace Shipe wrestle Mount Carmel’s Thomas Berezovske and Danville’s Ezeriah Tobias wrestle Midd-West’s Dylan Klingler.

133 POUNDS

This field is another one that has a great potential showdown between state-ranked wrestlers in the finals possibly. That matchup could see No. 3-ranked Bradley Wagner of Mifflinburg (37-2) face No. 13-ranked Landon Michaels of Lewisburg (33-8). Both are on opposite sides of the bracket and have a path to collide for gold.

Michaels will wrestle either Danville’s Donovan Sharpe or Warrior Run’s Samuel McCloskey and Wagner gets either Midd-West’s Lane Yount or Blayze Shaffer of Shamokin.

Wagner and Michaels have battled already this year on Jan. 17 when Wagner earned a 19-4, 2:30 tech over Michaels. In fact, the two have met up each of the last three years, with Wagner having a 3-0 record over him.

Saturday will see if Michaels can reverse that trend.

139 POUNDS

Mifflinburg’s Ben Straub has suffered just one loss this year as he’s an outstanding 36-1 as a senior. He’s a back-to-back sectional champ and will look to close his career with three in a row.

Straub is ranked No. 5 in the state and his record and results speak for themselves. The 139 field features two state-ranked wrestlers as Milton’s Ty Locke (28-8) is ranked No. 27 and is seeded two.

Straub faces either Mount Carmel’s Bradley Clark or Line Mountain’s Jordan Shingara Jr. and Locke has a bye into the semifinals to face Danville’s Zaynne Zutell.

Southern’s Gavin Trometter will wrestle Midd-West’s Witten Carter and Lewisburg’s Nolan Altoft (24-15) wrestles Shamokin’s Logan Pensyl.

145 POUNDS

Midd-West’s Charley Paige is ranked No. 20 at 139 and bumped up to 145 for the postseason. He’s 29-8 and is seeded at the top of the bracket and receives a bye into the semifinals. Paige is one of three state-ranked wrestlers in the field, which should make for some good matchups.

Southern Columbia’s Gavin Richard (33-11) is ranked No. 30 and Mifflinburg’s Lane Kenamond (32-9) is ranked No. 19. Kenamond and Richard could collide in the semifinals if both win their quarter and could face Paige in the final.

152 POUNDS

This is another field with a handful of state-ranked wrestlers in Line Mountain’s Dalton Schadel (13), Southern’s Brayden Andrews (14) and Lewisburg’s Landen Wagner (8).

Schadel is the top seeded wrestler with a 21-7 record while Wagner (33-2) is seeded second and Andrews (35-4) is third. Andrews and Wagner will likely meet in the semifinals as they are on the same side of the bracket and need a win to meet up with each other.

Schadel hasn’t wrestled either Andrews or Wagner this year, so a final with either of them could be a good matchup for fans to witness.

160 POUNDS

Warrior Run’s Reagan Milheim is undefeated at 40-0 and is the No. 2 ranked wrestler this year in Pennsylvania at his weight. He’s behind only BIshop McCort’s Melvin Miller. Milheim is committed to wrestle at American and is the school’s all-time wins leader with 183. He’s also lost just nine matches his entire career — just one the last two years combined.

That means Milheim is a huge favorite to claim a fourth consecutive sectional title. Of his 40 wins this year, 21 are by pin and 14 by tech fall.

Milheim also has 40 wins for the fourth straight year.

Midd-West’s Evan Maneval is ranked No. 23 at 152 and bumped up to 160 for the postseason. In addition, Mifflinburg’s Wesley Smith (21-13) is ranked No. 26 in the state and Milton’s Chase Lytle is ranked No. 29 with a 26-9 record. Four state-ranked wrestlers in one bracket means some good matchups on the horizon.

Milheim and Smith will likely meet in the semifinals while Lytle and Maneval should meet in the other.

Pay attention to 160, because there’s some good matchups that fans will get to watch.

172 POUNDS

This field will see Max Wirnsberger of Warrior Run (34-2) and Line Mountain’s Nolan Savage (31-5) collide for the title. Both wrestlers are ranked in the state at Nos. 3 and 7, respectively, and opponents will have a very difficult time trying to beat either.

Wirnsberger is 166-23 for his career and has won 42 or more matches in each of his first three seasons. He’s won two straight sectional titles and is hoping to make it a three-peat this year. Wirnsberger faces Mifflinburg’s Camden Shuck in the first round while Savage competes with Lewisburg’s Kade Lavulo.

189 POUNDS

Cade Feger of Line Mountain is 26-12 and ranked No. 21 in the state and Milton’s Michael Runkle is a sophomore with a 25-8 record and a state ranking of 29. Both are on opposite sides of the field and are seeded Nos. 1 and 2.

Feger, a freshman, will face Mifflinburg’s Lucas Miller and Runkle has Shamokin’s Bentley Kerstetter.

Mount Carmel’s Chance Swatski (21-3) faces Greg Fulmer of Southern (26-9) in what should be a good matchup while Warrior Run’s Blake Parker (19-15) faces Lennon Barner of Lewisburg (11-17).

215 POUNDS

Mifflinburg sophomore Landon Tucker is undefeated this season with a 34-0 record and is ranked No. 4 in Pennsylvania. On the opposite side of the bracket is No. 16th-ranked Jacob Schwalm of Line Mountain, a sneior who is 29-11.

Those two are the favorites to get to the final and will be difficult to defeat. Tucker faces Shamokins’ Tristan Campbell, MIlton’s Keegan McCaffery faces Mount Carmel’s Keegan Brown, Southern’s John Quinton faces Danville’s Aiden George and Schwalm faces Lewisburg’s Hunter Hollenbach.

285 POUNDS

Southern Columbia sophomore Braylin Smith (30-10) is having a great season and it’s paying off as he’s ranked No. 8 in Pennsylvania. Smith is in the same bracket as Warrior Run standout Noah Johnson, who’s 32-10 as a senior and is ranked No. 12 in the state.

Both are eyeing the sectional title and could meet up with a gold medal on the line in a showdown of top-12 wrestlers. Johnson got the best of Smith earlier this year with a third-period pin on Jan. 10. That means Smith is more than motivated to get revenge and reverse that result in Round 2.

Smith wrestles Lewisburg’s Cameron Walter, Mount Carmel’s Dominick Lentini wrestles Shamokin’s Robert Whitmer, Mifflinburg’s Landon Moser (34-9) wrestles Line Mountain’s Jackson Kauwell and Danville’s Tommy Trelease will face Johnson.

Moser is also state-ranked as he’s No. 15 in the state, meaning the 285 field features three talented state-ranked wrestlers.

Starting at $2.99/week.
