100 wins is nice, but NPL’s Pequignot is eyeing more

North Penn-Liberty’s Bryce Pequignot made winning look easy in his first two bouts at the Northeast Class AA Regional tournament at 121 pounds on Saturday at Williamsport’s Magic Dome.
First, the Mountie earned a dominating 19-3, 2:35 tech fall over Montrose’s Grady Loureiro. In the championship semifinals, Pequignot needed 2 minutes, 46 seconds to pin Carmen Malt of Berwick to reach the final.
While he didn’t secure a gold medal in the end — he ran into the buzzsaw that is No. 1-ranked Brock Rothermel of Line Mountain — Pequignot was able to accomplish something and that’s reach the 100-win milestone this postseason.
The two wins on Saturday gave Pequignot him 102, but Pequignot doesn’t focus on that. He has bigger goals.
“I mean it feels good, but I’m not here to set any win records,” Pequignot said. “I just wanna be on top of the podium at states. That’s my goal.”
He’s the fifth wrestler in North Penn/North Penn-Liberty history to reach the accomplishment. He joins a small list that includes North Penn’s Nathan Stettler (118), North Penn-Liberty’s Justin Kriner (112), North Penn-Liberty’s Brayden Pequignot (111) and North Penn’s Tyler Stettler (101).
But as the Mountie noted, the state podium is his goal this year, not wins.
“I’m going there to medal and that’s all I want to do is get on the podium,” Pequignot said after taking silver at regionals. “I’m going to give it my all.”
Pequignot knew entering the final that he’d have a tall task against Rothermel. There’s a reason the Line Mountain junior is ranked No.1 in the state and he showed it with a 17-2, 2:26 tech fall win.
“He’s obviously a really good opponent,” Pequignot noted. “I knew it would be tough. I just had to prepare myself the best I could.”
Pequignot now turns his attention to Hershey on Thursday. The Mountie junior (33-5) will face Tussey Mountain senior Dakota Santamaria (38-4) in the first round. A win would pit him most likely against top-seeded Sam Wolford of Northern Lebanon (49-3).
This is Pequignot’s third trip to the state tournament and while he didn’t medal at either trips previously, he knows what the competition is like.
“Just really not making the moment bigger than it is,” Pequignot said of what he took away from those two state trips. “It’s just another opportunity to go compete and do your best.”
Pequignot has done his best all year and it’s why he’s 33-5 and back at the Giant Center. And he’s been happy with the year he’s having this season.
“I feel like some tournaments I’ve could have done better, but overall going back to state tournament so you gotta be kind of happy,” Pequignot said.
