Hughesville (26-3) at
Wilkes-Barre Area, 7:30 p.m.
Dunmore road to Elite Eight: In District 2, beat Carbondale, 64-17; Riverside 48-28, and Holy Redeemer, 37-35; In States, beat Mount Carmel, 36-33 and Executive Education, 58-20
Dunmore notes: The Bucks repeated as District 2 champions, edging Redeemer on a 3-pointer with five seconds remaining. Dunmore is making its second straight quarterfinal appearance after losing to Loyalsock a year ago at Martz Hall. Hughesville and Dunmore played a last second thriller in the state tournament’s opening round two years ago, Hughesville rallying for a 39-38 win against the previous year’s state champion. Dunmore dominated Executive Education, the District 11 champion, Tuesday, building a 39-6 halftime lead. Like Hughesville, Dunmore has not let a playoff opponent reach 40 points. Amanda Dempsey and Janessa Martin each scored 14 points against Executive Education and were two of nine players who scored. Dunmore is a balanced team and Dempsey leads it in scoring at 10.8 points per game. Leena Conte averages 7.8, Jackie Brown 7.5 and Michelle Nidoh 6.7. Janaya Martin and Janessa Martin give Dunmore two other players averaging more than five points per game. Dempsey leads the team with 38 3-pointers and the Martin’s have combined for 35.
Hughesville road to Elite Eight: In District 4, beat Bloomsburg, 49-22; Mount Carmel, 40-25, and Loyalsock, 45-38; In States, beat Columbia, 63-32 and Notre Dame-Green Pond, 42-30
Hughesville notes: Hughesville has both matched the program record for wins and deepest run in program history, matching the 2024 squad which reached the quarterfinals. The Spartans have won five state tournament games the past three seasons and used stifling defense to defeat Notre Dame-Green Pond, allowing just five field goals and 15 points through three quarters. Maddie Smith made five steals and Anna Easton blocked two shots, giving her seven the first two state games. Vivian Draper and Smith combined for 18 rebounds and Casey Schultz and Kendall Hamm both excelled off the bench. Kylie Temple scored six fourth quarter points, helping Hughesville go up 18, and Allyssa King set the early tone in a first round win against Columbia. Hughesville went 10-0 in the HAC-III this season, capturing its first league championship since 2007 and its first outright league crown of the 2000s. Hughesville’s senior class has won 84 games during its scholastic run, the highest in program history.

Lewisburg road to Elite Eight: In District 4, beat Mount Carmel, 58-42, and Montoursville 56-53; In states, beat Big Spring, 70-54 and Pope John II, 64-59
Lewisburg notes: Lewisburg made history Tuesday, becoming the first in program history to reach the state quarterfinals. The Green Dragons also have matched the 2022 squad for most wins this decade and captured both district and Heartland Conference championships. Lewisburg has won 18 straight games, avenging two early-season losses against Southern Columbia and Warrior Run at the HAC Tournament. The Dragons rallied from a 10-point second quarter deficit against District 1 champion Pope John II and Rebira Jemana scored a career-high 19 points. LJ Tucker added 18 and Cooper Mowry 10, both hitting big 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. Nazir Meredith grabbed 16 rebounds against Big Spring and Cortland Michaels dealt nine assists in a game Lewisburg led 24-4 in the first quarter. McDevitt notes: Like Lewisburg, McDevitt has made big strides, improving by 11 wins. The Crusaders lost in last year’s first round against eventual champion Devon Prep. McDevitt averages nearly 60 points per game, but relied on stingy defense to defeat Archbishop Carroll. Kenyon Portee leads the team in scoring at 16.3 points per game and is followed by Ethan Hammer at 11.5 and Patrick Denisco at 9.3. Portee also produces 6.4 rebounds and 1.6 steals per game. Hammer and Denisco both started on last year’s state qualifier. McDevitt started the season 14-0 before losing to Trinity, 74-53. McDevitt had defeated Trinity earlier in the season.
