Four stadium records set in track dual meet between Hughesville, Loyalsock

The weather the past few days has been far from great. Lots of rain, some chilly temperatures. It’s far from ideal for practicing track and field outdoors. So entering Tuesday’s dual meet, Hughesville wasn’t sure what to expect in terms of its athletes for their first dual meet of the year.

Not only did the Spartans sweep Loyalsock in boys and girls competition, but they had three athletes break stadium records as well.

Not a bad start to the varsity season.

The Spartans won the girls competition vs. Loyalsock, 117-33, and the boys won, 84-66, to open the year on a positive note at Loyalsock’s Schick Elementary School.

Hughesville’s Kaviko Faulkner (300 hurdles, 40.56), Carter Sherwood (200, 2:01.56) and Katelyn Temple (400, 1:00.03) all broke the Loyalsock stadium record on Tuesday to help the Spartans’ excel as a team.

“”For (Faulkner) to come out and PR in the 300s, I’m pretty sure that’s a two-second PR for him. Break a stadium record? That’s insane,” Hughesville coach Griffin Molino said. “I got to brush up on what the state qualifying time is for the 300, but I’m pretty sure that’s getting close. For him, I think his goal was just to be better than he was last year, so for him to come out and run a time like that and be asking ‘hey what is the state time?’ and starting to realize he could do a little bit more than last year.”

“(Carter’s) been kind of in shadows in Tyce Shaner who’s had a lot of success, and even before Tyce there was Shea McCusker,” Molino said. “For him to come out and take control of a race and do best he possibly could, that was a huge race for him. It’s only going to lead to better things throughout the season.”

Loyalsock had an athlete set a stadium record too in Jeremiah Johnson. The Lancer set the stadium record in the shot put with a throw of 52 feet, 2 1/2 inches. Johnson already owns the school record in the event, which he set in 2025 with a throw fo 54-1 1/4.

In addition, Loyalsock’s Anton Cochran set a freshman record on Tuesday vs. Hughesville, doing so in the high jump. Cochran won with a height of 5-10, to win the event and set the freshman record. He beat out Hugehsville sophomore James Smith by two inches. HIt every mark on his first attempt until 5-6, where he missed the first before clearing it. He then cleared 5-8 on his first attempt and 5-10 on his first.

“Jeremiah went to states last year and had a great year, set a school record and he’s been working in the offseason to get back healthy from some injuries. He’s put time in hard and he’s way ahead of where he was last year,” Loyalsock coach Matt Hill said. “Anton is a freshman and for a kid to come out who’s very calm, very quiet, but works so hard. It’s paying off in first meet of the season.”

Johnson was a two-event winner on Tuesday for Loyalsock. He also won the discus with a throw of 113-6, the only competitor to break 92 feet. Jakob Charles of Hughesville finished second with a mark of 91-7, a PR.

Hughesville freshman Kalia Hack had a solid performance in her first varsity dual meet as she claimed two victories for the Spartans’ girls team. Hack won the long jump ith a distance of 14 feet, 3 1/2 inches, winning by almost a foot. In the triple jump, Hack hit a mark of 29-6, winning by one foot, 4 1/2 inches.

Both Hughesville and Loyalsock had multiple athletes reach PRs.

“I feel really positive,” Hill said. “We had improvements, we had a stadium record in shot put from Jeremiah Johnson, freshman record in high jump from Anton Cochran. I couldn’t be more proud of what our kids did today and have a positive attitude going forward.”

“We’re really really happy with both the boys and the girls. The weather’s been pretty rough to train in and getting out and actually jumping and throwing. It’s been pretty difficult, but the kids have been awesome. Whether we’ve been practicing inside or outside, they’ve been fully bought in,” Molino said. “I think it really showed here in the first meet. Guys we’ve had for awhile, guys coming back for their second year, getting right at their PRs and even above those. Getting that on their first meet with not a lot of practice underneath their belts is really great.”

Katelyn Temple also won the 100 in 12.94, winning by just 0.06 seconds over teammate Casey Schultz. The Spartans went 1-2-3 in the event as Sierra DeWire took third (13.17).

While the dual meet scores didn’t go the way Loyalsock had hoped, Hill was still glad to be competing against an outstanding team like Hughesville. It gave the Lancers a tough opponent to start the season.

“For sure. Hughesville brings a tough squad every year,” Hill said. “Coach (Rick) Glenwright and (Griffin) Molino have those kids squared away at all times. We want to compete against the best. I tell them all the time, run your lane, run your race and everything will work out. We want good competition and we got it today.”

Schultz was a two-event winner for Hughesville, claiming a victory in the 200 in 27.39, while Avery Puderbaugh took second in 28.81, setting a PR. Loyalsock senior Alaina Dadzie was third in 28.94. Schultz won the high jump with a PR of 5-4, winning by a foot over teammates Hailey Stevens and Jadyn Temple.

Loyalsock’s Aviya Halstead won the pole vault with a height of 7-0.

In the boys 100, Hughesville’s Spencer Stine and Loyalsock’s Danny Dowell ran an outstanding race. Stine beat out Dowell by just 0.005 seconds to win in 11.27. Stine officially ran an 11.264 while Dowell ran an 11.269. Dowell went on to win the 200 in 23.25, beating out Carter Gormont (23.66) and Sam Haddon (23.83).

Tyce Shaner of Hughesville was a two-event winner. The Spartan claimed a win in the 1,600 in 4:31.13. Shaner won the 3,200 with a time of 10:34.97. Loyalsock’s Ryan Lingg won the 400 in 55.12, beating out Patrick Stine by less than 0.80 seconds. Cochran took second in the 300 hurdles in 44.78 behind only Faulkner.

Loyalsock’s Tyler Kennedy hit a mark of 36-3 1/2 to win the triple jump.
