Golf tip of the week: Drop the elbow on the downswing
PHOTO PROVIDED Drop the elbow on the downswing.
Many golfers cast the club on the downswing, causing the club to move from the outside to an inside path. This creates the divot to point to the left of the intended target-line for the right-handed golfer and right of the target for the left-handed golfer.
Creating a pull shot or a slice in most cases. The cause is the back shoulder and trailing hand are working outside to in on the downswing causing a pulled shot.
The problem can be corrected if a golfer sets up parallel to the target-line, as if they were standing on a railroad track, with the feet and shoulders aligned on one track and the ball is on the opposite track.
When starting the downswing, allow the trailing elbow to drop against the side while keeping the hands cocked, allowing the grip end of the club to pass over the ball and point to the target. Then finish the swing ending up facing the target.
Don’t forget to enjoy this great game called golf.
