Lindsey leads Lycoming baseball against Elizabethtown
The Lycoming College baseball team played two tightly-contested matchups, but dropped both to 2025 NCAA Tournament participant Elizabethtown College, 4-3 and 9-3, in Landmark Conference action on Sunday, March 15 at Brandon Park.
Senior Brody Lindsey led the Warrior offense with two hits in each game and a double in game one.
Elizabethtown (9-2, 3-0) nipped Lycoming (7-9, 0-3) by one run for the second straight contest in the opener, then the Warriors led into the seventh in game two before the Blue Jays scored six in the ninth.
In game one, Lycoming pulled within a run in the bottom of the eighth, as Reeder led off with a single to right, then stole second and scored on a booming double from senior Brody Lindsey, but that was as close as Lycoming could get.
Lindsey went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, Reeder had a hit, walked twice, stole two bases and scored twice, and Maksimik, Guido, and senior Treysen Green combined for 5.0 scoreless innings out of the Lycoming bullpen.
The Warriors took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. Two walks and a hit batter loaded the bases with nobody out for Lycoming. A double play followed, but junior Anthony Guzman came across on the play to put the Warriors in front, 1-0.
Elizabethtown, though, pulled in front in the second. Alex McClain led off with a double and scored two batters later on an RBI single from Jake Ruple. David Woolley added a sacrifice fly later in the frame to put the Blue Jays ahead 2-1. One inning later, the Blue Jays again scored twice, as Tommy Kanakos singled home two runs to push Elizabethtown’s lead to three runs.
Lycoming answered back with a run in the bottom of the third. Senior Nick Reeder – a Montoursville graduate – drew a one-out walk, stole second, and moved to third on a single. An errant pickoff throw at first base brought Reeder across the plate to make it 4-2.
The score stayed there as both pitching staffs settled in. For the Warriors, first year right-hander Brayden Maksimik entered in the fifth inning and allowed a leadoff baserunner in each of his three full innings, but each time emerged unscathed, as he wound up spinning 3 1/3 scoreless innings before handing the ball off to senior lefty Matt Guido, who got the final two outs in the eighth.
Konokos drove in two and Patrick Summers had two hits for Elizabethtown, who also received a quality start from Logan Burns (1-0), who allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out five over 6.0 innings.
In the nightcap, Lindsey, Reeder, and catcher Tyler Wetzel – a Hughesville graduate – each notched two hits in the nightcap, with Reeder driving in a run and stealing two bases. Guzman also swiped two of Lycoming’s season-high six stolen bases.
The Warriors led 3-0 after two innings. Lycoming drew four walks in the first and stole five bases in the inning. Junior Eric MacCluen drove in the Warriors’ first run with a sacrifice fly, then on a double steal, an errant throw brought senior Sean Perkins home. One inning later, the Warriors added to the lead as Reeder dumped a two-out single into right-center to score Shay from second, pushing the lead to three runs.
First year right-hander Bryce Brungard – a Central Mountain graduate – erased a one-out walk in the first, then retired the next seven batters as he started his day with with three hitless innings. In the fourth, two walks and a single loaded the bases, chasing the right-hander after a career-high 3 1/3 innings. Senior Landon Evans came on and picked up a strikeout to start his outing, but Griffin Partridge followed with a two-out, two-run single to bring the Blue Jays within a run, 3-2.
Evans followed it up with two strong innings, going 2 2/3 scoreless innings with two hits, no runs, no walks, and three strikeouts to keep the one run lead. However, after being lifted in the seventh, the Blue Jays tied the game on a two-out RBI single from A.J. Lipscomb.
The score remained 3-3 as Warrior reliever Joel Inman recorded the final out in the seventh, then spun a 1-2-3 eighth. The Blue Jays loaded the bases with a double, hit batter, and a walk with one out in the ninth. After a pitching change, Lipscomb then looped a soft single to center to give the Blue Jays the lead en route to the six-run inning.
The Warriors will be back in action when they hit the road for the first time in Landmark Conference play for a road tilt against Wilkes on Thursday, March 19. First pitch from Bruggeworth Field is scheduled for 5 p.m.
