Local roundup: Furman helps Montgomery softball beat Millville 22-5 in five innings
State wrestling champion Zoe Furman made a smooth transition from the mat to the diamond, belting a triple and double, while driving in five runs as Montgomery pounded Millville, 22-5, in a five-inning season-opening win. The Red Raiders scored 16 third inning runs, turning a three-run deficit into a 13-run lead. Eight players had hits with Madisyn Miller, Brooke Deitrich and Arianna Snyder all delivering two.
Snyder and Deitrich drove in three runs and Addison Greger and Ramona Kroll hit doubles. Snyder and Ava Hartman combined for 13 strikeouts.
Elyna Booth picked up where she left off a year ago, throwing a two-hit shutout and striking out 11 as North Penn-Liberty blanked Wellsboro, 10-0. Bucknell-bound Haley Litzelman sparked the offense, going 1 for 1 with a double, three walks, three RBIs and two runs. Wellsboro sophomore pitcher Ady Frantz showcased her potential, allowing two hits and striking out 11. Nine walks, however, made the big difference in the game.
• Wellsboro erupted for 17 hits and scored 11 fifth inning runs in its season opener, defeating rival North Penn-Mansfield, 23-5 in five innings. Marek Mascho and Cohen Tennis each had four hits, Tennis going 4 for 4, and the Hornets scored in all five at-bats. Mascho doubled twice and drove in five runs and Max Mascho earned the win, while going 3 for 4 with three RBIs. Tennis, Reed Richardson and Griffin Morral all doubled and Cameron Owlett reached base four times, scoring three times.
Andy Hermansen went 2 for 2 with an RBI and two runs for North Penn-Mansfield, while Noah Musser hit an RBI double.
Cowanesque Valley won its second straight game, thumping Canton, 11-1 in six innings as four pitchers combined on a three-hitter. Gavin Churchill, Dave Hess and Ayren Morgan all hit doubles and CV scored multiple runs in five of its six at-bats. Gavin Churchill and Cam Stahli struck out seven in 4 2/3 combined innings.
Jacob Baylor collected two hits but Loyalsock was unable to dig out of an early three-run hole as it dropped its opener, 7-1 at Midd-West. The Lancers allowed runs in just two innings, but Midd-West scored three in the first and four in the fifth.
• Silas Boiywo won at No. 2 singles and combined with Ray Nickerson to help take the No. 1 doubles match as North Penn-Liberty won a 4-3 tennis thriller against Towanda. Boiywo won in straight sets in singles and combined with Nickerson to do so in doubles. Ayden Deitrick also was a double winner. He took a three-set singles match and combined with Toby Nolt to win at No. 2 doubles, 6-4, 6-2.
• Montgomery and South Williamsport both lost to Shikellamy in a quad-meet with Central Columbia in girls track and field. The Red Raiders lost to the Braves, 122-25, while the Mounties lost, 125-23.
South Williamsport’s Kendall Smith on the 1,600 by running a time of 5:50.49 and had a win in the 3,200 in 12:59.31. Adalynn Zellers of South was a third-place finisher in the 400. Carly Quimby took second in the 800.
Montgomery’s Selah Persing took second in the 100 hurdles while Brooke Knoebel was third. Persing also took second in the 300 hurdles.
Mikaila Ganoe of Montgomery claimed a win in the high jump thanks to clearing 4 feet, 10 inches. Lillian Muhl of Montgomery threw 85-9 in the discus to secure a win and Alexis McKeta of Montgomery won the javelin thanks to a throw of 100-0.
North Penn-Mansfield (86.5) beat Wyalusing (84.5) and NEB (15) in a tri-meet.North Penn-Mansfield’s Scarlett Graham won the 200 and 400. In the 200, Graham ran a 27.88 to win by nearly three seconds and Graham won the 400 in 1:05.37, beating Wyalusing’s Aleta O’Connor by almost six seconds.
North Penn-Mansfield’s Jaci Fairchild was a two-event winner as she won the 800 in 2:39.91 and the 1,600 with a time of 5:53.29. Mansfield’s Leila Garverick ran a time of 13:15.56 in the 3,200 to win.
Mansfied’s Madilynn Scott won the triple jump with a distance of 31 feet, 9 inches.
• In boys track and field, Montgomery lost to Shkellamy, 134-16, while South Williamsport fell to the Braves, 133-17, in a quad-meet at Shikellamy alongside Central Columbia.
Montgomery’s John Shrimp ran a time of 2:10.30 to win the 800 while Spencer Beatty, a South Williamsport runner, finished third. Beatty took second i the 1,600 and South’s Adam Kuriga was third in the 1,600. Kuriga also took second in the 3,200.
South Williamsport’s Kyree Moy was a second-place fniisher in the 300 hurdles.
Montgomery saw Jace Hanford finish second in the high jump. Camden Dalrymple was second in the triple jump and Jack Fortin of South Williamsport finished third in the javelin.
Mansfield’s Michael Knefley claimed a win in the 1,600 thanks to running a 4:46.24, winning by roughly 13 seconds over NEB’ Jackson Martin. Knefley also won the 800 in 2:14.34. Teammate Peter Bishop took second in 2:16.16.
Mansfield went 1-2-3 in the 400 as Sudan Benner won in 53.60, Braden VanLoon took second in 55.69 and Charles Aumick took third in 58.21.
