Local roundup: Loyalsock softball opens season by beating Lake -Lehman 6-5

Loyalsock softball opened its season on a high, erasing a two-run third-inning deficit, scoring six runs against James Madison-bound pitcher Hannah Chipego and defeating Lake-Lehman, 6-5, at Short Park.

Easton Waller threw a three-hitter and struck out 13, while going 2 for 2 with three runs and two steals. Shyla Fulp also had two hits, including a double, with two RBIs. Lydia Kresock also doubled and scored a run, while Kinsie Phillips added an RBI. Loyalsock tied it 3-3 with two runs in the third and scored three times in the fourth, going ahead to stay.

Emilia Viveiros slammed a three-run home run and earned the win in the circle, helping Sullivan County rally for a 12-10 win at Lewisburg in its season opener.

The Griffins scored nine times in the fifth inning, turning a four-run deficit into a 12-7 lead. Viverios struck out six and Charley Insinger had two hits with an RBI. Tymber Jamieson made an impressive debut for Lewisburg, the freshman homering, doubling and driving in three runs. Nora Hockenbrock, Meg Mitchell, Brinley Haile and Aaliyah Bleich also had two hits each for the Green Dragons who finished with 13 hits.

• Hunter Simonds and Danny Smith both produced four hits, helping defending District 4 Class A champion Cowanesque Valley start strong, defeating Northeast Bradford, 13-5, in baseball action. Simonds drove in three runs, scored twice and earned the win in relief, while Smith doubled, drove in four runs and scored twice. Lucas Hamilton went 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Gavin Churchill 2 for 3 with a double and run. Six Cowanesque Valley pitchers combined for 13 strikeouts.

• The Mansfield baseball team fell to No. 12 West Chester in a doubleheader, 9-0 and 10-0, at Brandon Park.

Quinn Shindler started the first game for the Mounties (10-13, 1-3 PSAC East) pitching 3 2/3 innings and tossing five strikeouts while only allowing three earned runs.

Mansfield struggled to keep runners on base hitting into three double plays throughout the game. Errors in the third inning lead to a three runs scoring. Kahale Burns, Slade McTigue and Billy Riggs each went 1-3 on the day.

The Mountie bats were held in check once again by the Golden Rams (16-3, 3-1 PSAC East) in the second game. Ryan Sekulski was the lone multi-hit player for Mansfield, going 2-3.

• The Mansfield softball team had two games slip away on the road against Millersville, losing 3-2 and 6-5.

Mansfield (3-9, 0-4 PSAC East) fought hard in the first game using a strong third inning, but the Marauders eked out a win. Sarah Shupp and Lilliana Moyer had RBIs and Aubry Reinert went 2-4 with a run.

The Mounties conceded a pair of runs in the first inning. They would respond in the top of the third on a Shupp RBI double to cut the lead to 2-1. Moyer would tie the game two batters later scoring Shupp on a single and tieing the game 2-2.

The Marauders (13-7, 3-1 PSAC East) would get the go ahead in the bottom of the inning on a solo homerun. Mansfield was held at bay the following four innings for a 3-2 final.

• Senior Riley Block became the second Lycoming College women’s lacrosse player to reach 300 career points with her third of four goals as Lycoming fell to Drew University, 20-4, in Landmark Conference action.

Block posted four goals, five ground balls, four draw controls and caused a turnover while finishing the game with 301 career points off 250 career goals and 51 assists. She is 18 points shy of the school record of 319 points set by Kelly McGinniss (2019).

Freshman Julie Dammes added an assist and a caused turnover and first-year Molly Giufre grabbed two ground balls for the Warriors (3-5 overall, 0-1 Landmark).

Regina Williams led the Rangers with six goals and two assists and Madi Strong added three goals and three assists. Aubrey Welch also added nine draw controls and Emily Monaco added three caused turnovers.

Lock Haven opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Western Division play at home and the Bald Eagles picked up a dominating, 19-7, victory over visiting Edinboro (1-5, 0-1 PSAC West).

Picked third in the PSAC West Preseason Coaches’ poll, Lock Haven improved to 4-2 overall (1-0 PSAC West).

The Bald Eagles are now 3-1 at home on the Charlotte Smith Field turf this season.

Lock Haven led 11-4 at halftime as Makayla Kelly and Gabby Gunnip combined for nine total goals on the day. Kelly netted five and Gunnip scored four times.

Addi Reidle netted a hat trick and added on assist. Lexi Bunk and Hadley Munn both scored twice. Allore Needle, Addy Palm and Maddy Raspen each recorded one goal in the victory.

Peyton Masters dished out three assists to pace the offense.

Mackenna Brown led a defensive unit that was credited with 16 caused turnovers. Brown had two caused turnovers and three ground balls.

• Freshmen Samuel Hall and Ryan MacElhinney scored to lead the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team as it fell to Drew University, 21-2, in Landmark Conference action.

Junior Evan Donnelly posted five ground balls and added two caused turnovers while making 22 saves in net. Sophomore Cesar Carmona-Felipe added two ground balls, an assist and a caused turnover for the Warriors (2-5 overall, 0-1 Landmark).

Drew (4-3 overall, 1-0 Landmark) was led by seven goals and an assist from Joost van der Horst and 12 groundballs and 20 faceoff wins from Gabriel Gutierrez. Yaneik Gallego added three goals and four assists and Eli Sanford had seven groundballs.

Sawyer Kennedy earned the win in net for Drew, allowing a goal and making three saves in the first quarter.

Penn College dealt Montclair State its first loss of season with a 16-12 win over the Red Hawks in a non-conference game. The Wildcats improved to 9-2, while Montclair dropped to 8-1.

After the Red Hawks scored the first goal of the game, Penn College answered with nine-straight scores, led by four goals from Owen Kupsey, to lead 9-1 with 10:05 left in the second. After MSU scored back-to-back goals, Aidan McFalls notched his 100th career goal to give PCT a 10-3 lead before the Hawks answered to make it 10-4 at halftime.

Montclair cut into the Wildcats’ lead with four-straight to open the third before Kupsey stopped the onslaught with back-to-back goals to give PCT a 12-7 lead with 6:09 left in the third. The Hawks got as close as three, 12-9, with 20 seconds left in the third but John Dolezal found Jesse Weick with two seconds left to put the Wildcats ahead 13-9 at the end of the third. PCT outscored MSU, 3-2, in the fourth.

Bucknell and Loyola locked up in an evenly contested matchup and the Greyhounds outlasted the Bison, 13-12, in Patriot League action at Ridley Athletic Complex. Owen Kovacs scored three goals, and Jaz Zanelli tallied 13 saves in another outstanding relief effort, but Bucknell fell one short and dropped to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

It was a game of runs, as the Bison jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before Loyola responded with a 6-1 run. Bucknell surged back in front with four straight goals, the Greyhounds responded with four straight to go up 10-8, but the Bison battled back again to tie the game at 11-11 on Peter Grandolfo’s rip in the opening moments of the fourth quarter.

Both teams had long possessions throughout most of the fourth period, with both goalies making timely saves. Zanelli stoned Loyola sniper Mason Cook twice in that stretch, but counterpart Max Watkinson made two straight stops to keep the game tied. The Greyhounds finally cashed in at the end of a two-minute possession, with Kenan Everhart scoring the tiebreaking goal with 5:57 left in the game.

• Sophomore Sadie Stahl, a South Williamsport graduate, and senior Emma Kelchner, a Central Columbia graduate, paced the Lycoming College women’s tennis team, as it fell to Drew University, 7-0, in Landmark Conference action.

Stahl and Kelchner teamed up at No. doubles to take Madison Williams and Natalia Zamora to a tiebreaker, falling 7-6 (3). Stahl also won five games in her match at No. 2 singles with Zamora, 6-4, 6-1.

The Warriors fell to 1-8 overall and 0-3 in the Landmark and Drew improved to 3-6 overall and 1-0 in the Landmark.

• The Lycoming College men’s tennis team fell to Drew University, 7-0, in a Landmark Conference match. Lycoming (2-6, 0-4 Landmark) was led by junior Thomas Andersen, who won three games at No. 5 singles, falling 6-3, 6-0 to Ty Geljins of Drew (5-5, 2-0 Landmark).

The Warriors will be back in action on Friday for a non-conference match against Lancaster Bible. The match will get underway at 3 p.m. from the Brandon Park tennis courts.

• The Lock Haven men’s track and field team opened the outdoor season this weekend at the Alan Connie Shamrock Invitational at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Bald Eagles earned nine Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship qualifying marks.

Myka Simmons ran 10.74m in 100 meter prelims and qualified for the 2026 PSAC Championships. The time is the third fastest in Lock Haven history. Simmons also impressed in the 200m by finishing in 21.38. The time is the second fastest in Lock Haven event history and a PSAC qualifier.

Montoursville graduate Josiah Schans took second in the 110 hurdles and earned a PSAC qualifier by finishing in a blazing time of 14.20.

Jersey Shore graduate Peter Bellomo and Carter Young both earned PSAC qualifiers in the Javelin Throw. Bellomo reached 192 feet, 2 inches and Young reached 189-3 . The duo finished sixth and seventh respectively.

Matt Reinard sped through the 400 hurdles by finishing in 54.65. Reinard earned third place and a PSAC qualifying time. Schans also earned a PSAC qualifier in the event by finishing in 56.27.

Anden Aitkins punched his ticket to the PSAC Championship in the 800m by finishing in 1:53.80 and took sixth place.

Freshman Brayden Frair earned a PSAC qualifier in his first 3,000 steeplechase. Frair finished in 9:43.66 and placed fourth.

On the women’s side, the Bald Eagles earned six PSAC Championship qualifying marks.

Defending PSAC Champion in the 800 Nicole Caroll earned her way back to the event by finishing in 2:17.39.

Three Bald Eagles qualified in the Javelin Throw. Olivia Spotts earned third place by reaching a mark of 136-10. Ava Komorowski finished sixth with a mark of 132-10 and Maria Puglia took eighth (128-09).

Clarissa Davis earned a PSAC Qualifier in the shot put with a mark of 40-9 3/4.

The 800 relay team of Lillian Bradley, Alexanne Fite, Makayla Grace Weber and Williamsport graduate Elizabeth Shultz finished the race in 1:46.19, marking the second fastest time in Lock Haven program history.

Weber earned a PSAC qualifier in the 400 hurdles by finishing in 1:05.07 and took sixth.

Shultz and Fite came extremely close to reaching the PSAC qualifying mark of 59.40 in the 400m. Shultz finished in 59.84 and Fite finished in 59.90.

The Mansfield men’s track and field team competed at the Keystone Challenge hosted by Shippensburg University. Cahsid Raymond opened the day for with a win in the 200 meter-dash with 21.57. He also showed promise took at long jump placing fourth with 7.07 meters, both of which are PSAC qualifying marks.

Marcus Quaker placed fourth with a mark of 56.98 meters in javelin, which is also a qualifying mark, a personal best and the seventh best throw in program history.

Calvin Cragle earned his ticket to conference in shot put after a 14.92 meter throw. He now sits at fourth in program history and took sixth in competition.

On the women’s side for Mansfield, the team of Makayla Robicheaux, Wyoming Trudeaux, Sandra Lemus and Samantha Newman finished second in the 400 meter relay with a time of 51.07.

Newman finished third in triple jump with a mark of 10.90 meters , which places her fourth in program history. Alyssa Parks took on the 400 meter hurdles placing fourth in the meet with 1:07.33 and second in school history. As well as the 100 meter hurdles finishing 11th at 16.87.

Newman also finished sixth in the 60 meter dash (12.87). Lemus followed in the 100 meter with 13.52 placing eighth.
