Local roundup: Lycoming baseball falls to Elizabethtown 7-6

Senior Sean Perkins launched his team-leading third home run of the season to help the Lycoming College baseball team to a late lead, but 2025 NCAA Division III Championship team Elizabethtown College scored four runs in the ninth to steal both teams’ Landmark Conference opener, 7-6, on Saturday afternoon at Brandon Park.

Elizabethtown (7-2, 1-0) scored four runs on five hits in the ninth inning to deny Lycoming (7-7, 0-1) an opportunity to win their conference opener for the second season in a row.

After a 1-2-3 top of the first from junior right-hander Alex Halbert, a leadoff walk and a sacrifice bunt set the table for Perkins, who tagged a 2-1 fastball 388 feet over the center field fence for a two-run homer that gave the Warriors a 2-0 lead.

After back-to-back singles in the third, a ground ball up the middle followed that second baseman Kaden Shay, a South Williamsport graduate, stopped on a dive and flipped to second for an out. A run scored on the play, but Shay’s stop helped stem the tide for the Warriors, who maintained a 2-1 edge.

In the fourth, Lycoming restored the two-run advantage. Senior Brody Lindsay banged a double off the fence in left-center to begin the frame, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, then came around to score on a groundout from senior Nick Hoheb.

Halbert brushed aside a one-out infield hit in the fourth, then spun a 1-2-3 fifth. In the sixth, though, David Woolley led off with a triple down the right-field line, then came home on a groundout from Mason Woolwine to bring the Blue Jays back within a run.

The right-hander returned for the seventh and surrendered a leadoff single, then induced two groundout that had him on the verge of completing the inning, but Alex Perrin sliced a two-out RBI double into the left-field corner that tied the game at three apiece. Halbert departed for senior southpaw Matt Guido, who recorded the final out of the inning to keep the game knotted up.

Lock Haven fell to Shippensburg, 22-6 and 10-3, in a non-conference doubleheader. Lock Haven falls to 2-12, while the Raiders improve to 12-4

In game one, the Bald Eagle offense secured 11 base knocks.

Jerry Lambert (2 for 2) was the lone multi-hit Bald Eagle, while Wyatt Harrar, Braden Cummings, Tom Rohan, Dylan Metzgar, and Cayde McCloskey each drove in runs for The Haven.

In the second game, Lock Haven had an early 3-1 lead thanks to a Cummings RBI triple in the third and an RBI triple from Kellen Jackson in the fifth.

Cummings, Robert Furino, and Gardner Fravel each had two hits.

Michael Chiaravallo’s two-out pinch hit double in the eighth gave Bucknell its first series win in the Patriot League in a 9-8 victory over Lafayette at Depew Field at Marren Park. The Bison overcame a four-run deficit to win their second straight game over Lafayette and will look to sweep the Leopards.

Lafyette (1-12, 0-2 PL) took a big lead in the top of the sixth with a four-run burst, but Bucknell (6-10, 2-0 PL) answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame with four runs to tie it back up.

Billy Fluharty led off the eighth inning with a triple for his fourth hit of the afternoon. Lafayette earned two quick outs to hold Fluharty at third, but Chiaravallo came in to hit a blooper to center field for the game-winning run. Liam Jones then entered the game in the ninth to earn his first career save.

• The Mountaineer softball team (2-4) traveled to compete in the Virginia Wise Tournament, with the Mounties dropping two heartbreakers, losing game one to Seton Hill, 4-3, and game two to Salem University, 6-0.

Both teams stat on the board with strictly zeros thanks to starting pitcher, Britni Motter in game one.

Emma Maurer stepped in as the designated hitter collecting a double into right field bringing in Paige Reichard. A Griffin error disguised as an over throw to first base, allowed Sarah Shupp to slide on home.

Seton Hill picked up the pace with a single run RBI cutting the lead to just one.

• Senior Riley Block posted 12 goals and three assists to lead the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team as it posted a 23-0 win over Hilbert College to wrap up its non-conference schedule.

The 15 points gives Block 297 in her career, just three away from becoming the second player in program history with 300 career points and 22 from the record of 319 set by Kelly McGinniss (2019). Block’s 12 goals in the game moved her into second in the school’s career record book, as she moved past her former teammate, Katie Maguire (2025), with her 11th of her 12 goals, which gave her 245 in her career. She is 38 goals shy of McGinniss’ record of 284 goals.

Block also added 12 draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers, as she reached 10 goals in a game for the third time this year. Freshman Julie Dammes added four goals, three ground balls and a caused turnover and first-year Lilian Quigley added three goals, a ground ball and a caused turnover for the Warriors (3-4).

• Penn College outscored Morrisville, 10-4, in the second half to earn a 15-12 win in a non-conference men’s lacrosse game Saturday. The Wildcats improved to 7-2, while the Mustangs fell to 3-2.

Trailing 8-5 at halftime, Penn College pulled within one, 8-7, after scores from Jake Small and Aidan McFalls to start the third quarter. Morrisville scored a goal at 11:46 before McFall’s man-up goal two minutes later made it 9-8.

After the Mustangs went ahead 11-9, with 8:37 left in the game, Penn College exploded with three straight scores, from Small, Will Ehret, and McFalls, to take its first lead of the half, 12-11, with 6:24 left in the game. Morrisville deadlocked the game one more time on a goal with 4:21 left, but PCT answered with scores from Daniel Kalizak, Elliot Dotson, and Gavin Selchert to end the game.

Penn College outshot Morrisville, 62-26, and successfully cleared on 17 of 19 attempts, while its ride held the Mustangs to 19 clears on 33 attempts, and Antonio Santora went 26 of 31 on faceoffs.

Owen Kovacs scored two of his career-high five goals in Bucknell’s big fourth quarter, helping the Bison rally past defending-champion Colgate 14-12 in Patriot League men’s lacrosse action at windswept Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. Michael Meyer also had a big day with two goals and a career-high six assists, with three of those helpers coming on Bucknell’s four fourth-quarter tallies.

Bucknell improved to 6-2 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League after regaining control in the fourth quarter. The Bison dominated the first half and led 8-5 at intermission, but the Raiders scored four goals in a five-minute span early in the third quarter to take the lead.

After Colgate went up 9-8 on a Quinn Spillett goal with 7:02 left in the third, a goalie change helped turn the momentum back in Bucknell’s favor. Jaz Zanelli came off the bench and made six big saves while the Bison surged back in front, and he threw in an assist on the go-ahead goal to boot.
