Local roundup: Snyder and Frey throw no-hitters, while Miller reaches impressive milestone
Arianna Snyder threw a no-hitter, and Madisyn Miller drove in her 100th run Wednesday, lifting Montgomery to a 2-0 win at Halifax. Snyder struck out eight and won for a second straight day, while Miller reached 100 RBIs in dramatic fashion, slugging a home run. She also went 2 for 2 with two walks. Snyder has 16 strikeouts in 10 1/3 innings the past two days and Miller is within three hits of 100. Snyder, Addison Greger, and Brooke Dietrich also had hits for Montgomery (2-0).
Alexis Frey was dominant in the circle and the the plate, also throwing a no-hitter and leading Jersey Shore to an 8-1 win at Lewisburg. Frey struck out a career-high 14, walked none and went 3 of 4 with a double and two RBIs. She also threw 66 of her 86 pitches for strikes. Freshman Sophia Wrench doubled twice and drove in two runs, while scoring twice for the Bulldogs (2-0). Mya Lehman also had two hits and an RBI. Dani Miller and Lynna Clark both had hits, RBIs and runs.
Elyna Booth threw her second two-hitter in as many days, but Towanda scored three early runs, held off a late North Penn-Liberty rally and won, 4-2. Booth struck out six and allowed just one earned run. Elaina Shaw went 2 for 3 with a run and Addy Lehman had a hit and RBI for the Mounties (1-1).
Avery Buss and Rachel Paulhamus both had hits for Muncy in its 16-0 loss against Southern Columbia. Sophie Maiorana struck out four in three innings in the pitching circle.
Nolen Pauling threw a two-hit, complete game gem, helping Jersey Shore win its second straight game as it defeated Danville, 6-2. Pauling struck out eight, threw 69 of 101 pitches for strikes and also had a hit with two runs. Carter Rhinehart sparked the offense for Jersey Shore (2-0), going 2-3 with an RBI. Hunter Hunters hit an RBI double and scored a run, while Mazden Lupton added a hit and RBI. Carson Watkins went 1 for 2 with two runs as Jersey Shore overcame a deficit for a second time.
Jersey Shore boys’ tennis traveled to Williamsport on Wednesday night and defeated Williamsport, 5-0. Its singles players – Ryder Fink, Ezra Paulhamus and Saul Hensler – dropped one combined game, with Fink and Paulhamus pulling off clean sweeps.
In doubles, Williamsport duos Charles Plummer/Wyatt Judge and Richard Chen/Mason Robinson gave the Bulldogs a good run, picking up wins in both sets to stay within striking distance. But both Shore duos prevailed when it mattered, as the team finished the HAC-I bout without dropping a set.
No. 1 Montoursville singles player Teli Bobotas shook off a first-set sweep, winning 12 of his next 16 games to help the Warrior defeat Selinsgrove, 4-1, on Wednesday. Colby Ulmer added a decisive singles win at Court 3 and the Warriors swept doubles, with Cullin Pauling and Mason Fry pulling off a clean sweep on Doubles Court 2.
In a battle against Loyalsock, Lewisburg was able to sweep doubles to defeat the Lancers, 4-1. Colby Jacob and Tyson Nicholls shut down a second-set surge from Loyalsock on Doubles Court 1, as the Green Dragons dropped just nine combined games in doubles.
In singles, Canyon Swartzentruber edged out Loyalsock’s Elijah Lin, 7-2, in a first-set tiebreaker, setting the tone for an exciting, straight-set win. Henry Heintzelman picked up a gentleman’s sweep on Singles Court 2 to round out Lewisburg’s wins, and David Bjorkman picked of Sock’s lone victory in straight sets on Singles Court 3
