Local roundup: Williamsport boys tennis opens season beating Milton 3-2

Williamsport opened its season in boys tennis with an exciting 3-2 win against Milton on Wednesday afternoon. The highlight of the match was a three-set, tiebreak thriller at No. 3 singles.

The Millionaires saw Howard Chen secure the 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win to help secure Williamsport’s victory.

Williamsport heads to Montoursville on Monday for its next matchup.

Spencer Kaar won at No. 2 singles for Williamsport with a 6-1, 6-1 win voer Ricky Campos. At No. 1 doubles, Charles Plummer and Joseph Hillman of Williamsport beat Tavin Reitz and Tobin Strous, 7-5, 6-3. Hagen Hanselman of Milton beat Wyatt Judge at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-3 and Milton’s doubles team of Cole Blackman and Cahner O’Grady secured a three-set win against Williamsprot’s Richard Chen and Mason Robinson, 0-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Hughesville secured a 4-1 win at Blossburg Island Tennis Courts.

The Spartans swept the singles competition. At No. 1 singles, Kevin Bobak won 6-1, 7-5 over Ray Nickerson and at No. 2 singles, the Spartans’ Luke Ragan beat Silas Boiywo, 7-5, 6-1. Carter Haines won via forfeit at No. 3 singles.

Hughesville’s Luke Vermeirc and Michael Wales beat Jediel Ocasio-Vazquez and Ayden Deitrick, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles. Liberty’s only win came at No. 2 doubles where Andre Reed and Toby NOlt beat Bailey Spring and Landon Hill won, 6-4, 7-5.

Loyalsock suffered a 4-1 loss against Central Columbia. The Lancers’ lone victory came at No. 1 singles where Elijah Lin defeated David Toscano in three sets. After falling in the first set, 6-4, Lin rallied to win the next two, 6-0, 6-4.

Central’s Joey Pecora beat Nathaniel DePrenda at No. 2 singles, 7-5, 6-2 and at No. 3 singles, Nate Lang of Central Columbia beat David Bjorkman, 7-5, 6-2.

Loyalsock’s doubles team of Ian Bower and Daniel Taormina fell to Tanner Fensch and Aiden Mahamadov, 6-2, 6-0 and Central Columbia’s Connor Litchfield and Elijah DeCarlo won in three sets at No. 2 doubles, 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.

Wellsboro cruised to a 5-0 win against Cowanesque Valley. Gideon Lawton beat Carter Hoke at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-1. Wellsboro’s Tavi Lyman beat Collin Hoke at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, while Stephen Poirier (No. 3) and Fen Moyer (No. 4) secured 6-0, 6-0 wins against Marshall Preston and Andrew Loura, respectively.

Lewisburg defeated Bloomsburg, 4-0, to open the season with a victory. Henry Heintzelman had a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles over Marc-Alexi Dobbins. Luke Azeredo of Lewisburg won at No. 2 singles against Will Keller, 6-2, 6-0, and Colby Jacob secured a 6-4, 6-0 win against Colton Roberts at No. 3 singles.

Clark Nicholls and Olin McIlwaine earned a 6-3, 6-1 win against Kiernan Adams and Pret Patel at No. 1 doubles.

• The Lock Haven women’s lacrosse team (3-2) traveled to Frostburg, Md. for a road non-conference contest vs. Frostburg State (5-2) as Frostburg State won, 15-7.

The Bobcats set the tone early by outscoring the Bald Eagles 9-3 through the first 30 minutes. Frostburg State tacked on four more goals in the third to Lock Haven’s two before an even 2-2 fourth gave The Haven its first road loss of the season.

Makayla Kelly was the game’s leading goal scorer with four, including the 100th of her career. Kelly also earned a milestone of 100 career draw controls as she tied Brynlee Pinschenat with a game-high five.
