HERSHEY – Through Zoe Furman’s quarterfinal match against Parkland’s Angelina Spachman on Friday, there were multiple instances that likely raised concern for the Montgomery faithful. It was a tense, physical bout that’d challenge even the strongest will, even featuring a few gut-churning stoppages due to injury.
However, the Montgomery senior rolled with the punches, keeping a clear head and focusing on getting the job done. Two six-point moves allowed her to stay one step ahead from the first period to the closing whistle, as she posted a 17-9 major decision. Then, she’d carry that momentum into her semifinal.
A first-period takedown would grant her the early lead, and the next – a second-period reversal – would carry into the kicker. That second-period pin would advance her to her second straight state championship appearance, one she hopes to make the most of as she looks to cap off her prolific career on a high note.
“After that win, I’m feeling great,” said Furman. “Obviously, coming up with a big win in the semifinals, especially a bonus-point win, I feel ready for tomorrow. Just got to get a good night’s sleep tonight, rehydrate, replenish my nutrients and get after it tomorrow.”
Following her second-period reversal against No. 4 Ella Teufert (Octorara) in championship semis, Furman was able to gain the advantage out of a scramble. She’d made the most of the optimal position and wasted little time securing the pin and clinching her championship bid.

“I just ended up coming up on top in great position and trapping both her arms, punching half, taking her to her back and finishing the match there in the second period,” said Furman on the sequence.
With the win, Furman gets a chance to right the wrongs of her previous state championship appearance, where she fell to four-time state champ (two-time PIAA champ) Aubre Krazer (Easton). In pursuit of Montgomery’s first state title in program history, she’ll look to make the most of it.
In tomorrow’s 136-pound final, she’s set for a Central Regional final rematch against No. 3 Sayona Harris-Haye (Greater Johnstown). The Red Raider was able to work a pin then, but it did come after a tense affair.
“The mindset for tomorrow is to go out, keep a clear head, know my moves, my offense, stay on it and secure the victory for myself, my program, my community and everyone that’s supported me the entire way here,” said Furman.
Outside of Furman, Williamsport senior Lillian Rumsey also competed in championship semis, ultimately falling to No. 3 Olivia Kearns (Shippensburg) by second-period pin. She’ll look to bounce back and close out her storied career on a high note, starting early in fifth-round consolations.

Alongside Rumsey, teammate Malaina Comfort (100), Hughesville sophomore Avery Earnest (142) and Montgomery sophomore Jenna Houseknecht (106) will also be chasing higher spots on the podium, having each put in work through consolations.
Saturday’s action kicks off at 9:30 a.m. with finals set for 4 p.m.
