A lot of eyes will be focused on Montgomery senior Zoe Furman, who is looking to become the first District 4 wrestler to win a gold medal after taking silver last year and coming just shy of that milestone.
She’s more than motivated. It’s been on her mind since last March when she suffered a loss in the finals.
Furman noted earlier in the year at the MATNESS at the MACC Tournament at Liberty Arena that a gold medal was what she was going for this year and she had her eyes on it.
Thursday begins her quest to accomplish that goal as she’s competing at 136 pounds and is the top seed in the state.
Joining Furman in Hershey from Montgomery is sophomore Jenna Houseknecht (106), Brielle Walk (130), Georgia Leet (155) and Adelyn Rine (235).

FRANK DIMON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Williamsport’s Lillian Rumsey secures a fall at 118 pounds at the Central Regional championships on Saturday at Milton. Rumsey has won back-to-back bronze medals at states and is hoping to get higher on the podium.
Williamsport qualified Malaina Comfort (100), Lillian Rumsey (118) and Mia Davis for Hershey while Hughesville has just one: Avery Earnest (142).
Central Mountain’s Kendall Wagner is heading to states as the Wildcats’ lone qualifier. Milton qualified Kyleigh Ficks (112) and Shu Hyra Ali (142).
A quick breakdown of area wrestlers in the field.
Comfort of Williamsport is 27-5 and has a first-round matchup against Nazareth’s Chelsea Dressler, a junior who is 34-3.
Houseknecht is looking to become a two-time state medalist after she took bronze last year and was a key part of the Red Raiders’ success in winning the team title at states last year.

FRANK DIMON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Montgomery’s Jenna Houseknecht wrestles Redban Valley’s Breanna Crawford during the Central Regional tournament.
The Red Raider is 39-4 and the sophomore will face Chambersburg’s Jessica Li (26-11) in the first round at 106. She’s a two-time District 4 champion and two-time Central Regional champion.
Milton’s Ficks (37-7) is in the 112 bracket and faces Bermudian Springs’ Riley Jackson (31-5) in the first round. She’s one of two District 4 wrestlers in the field, joined by Towanda freshman Kaylen Sluyter.
At 118, Rumsey is back in the tournament with a 22-1 record. The Millionaire missed nearly a month of competition with a shoulder injury, but claimed a District 4 title and Central Regional title. Now, she’s eyeing one more medal: gold.
Rumsey is motivated to claim the top spot on the podium in Hershey, especially after back-to-back third-place finishes at the state tournament each of the last two years.
Coach Kevin Werner noted earlier in the year that he felt Rumsey had a strong chance to win a title this year. It begins Thursday with a first-round matchup against Northeastern’s Jenny Kramer.

FRANK DIMON/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Montgomery’s Zoe Furman tries to turn Greater Johnstown’s Sayonna Harris-Haye at 136 pounds at the Central Regional tournament in Milton. Furman is the top seed at 136 at the state tournament.
Rumsey is a 100-win wrestler and is 110-4 entering the state meet. She’s never lost more than one match in a season. She’s a three-time District 4 champion and a four-time regional champion. She took third her freshman year in a non-PIAA sanctioned state tournament.
Rumsey is also second all-time in wins in District 4 girls wrestling history. She is behind only Athens’ Anaiah Kolesar, who will wrestle next year at Edinboro (112). Athens’ Joyce Clink (32-9) is on the top side of the bracket at 118.
Montgomery’s Walk, a junior, is 25-6 and is seeded in the 130 bracket. The Red Raider will face Mariana Bracetti’s Julie Ortiz (16-4) in the first round. Kolesar is seeded at the top of the bracket with a 37-1 record and has a first-round showdown with East Stroudsburg South’s Arianna Pieretti.
Shikellamy’s Aubrey Rebuck is also in the 130 bracket.
At 136, Montgomery’s Furman is the top seed with an undefeated 41-0 mark to her name and is a favorite in the field to win out. She’s ranked No. 1 at her weight in the state.
The Red Raider senior will face Central Dauphin’s Alexa Elbertson (31-7) in the first round. She’s one of just two District 4 wrestlers in the field, joined by Central Columbia’s Saleah Shannon (29-5) on the bottom portion of the bracket.
Hughesville sophomore Avery Earnest won a Central Regional championship and is an impressive 36-3. She’s the Spartans’ only state qualifier this year and is hoping to make a lengthy stay in Hershey. She wrestles against Hickory’s Taylor Pears in the first round. Earnest received an honorable mention nod in the state rankings and is a two-time state qualifier after she didn’t place last year. Expect Earnest to be motivated this year to reach the podium. Milton’s Ali (28-8) will wrestle Upper St. Clair’s Grace Nasman (30-8) at 142.
Central Mountain standout Kendall Wagner was a Central Regional silver medalist and was the Wildcats’ lone qualifier for the state tournament. The senior Wildcat (25-7) has a first-round matchup against Octavia Walke of Norwin (37-10). The top-seeded wrestler is Palisades’ Bryce Snyder (35-1).
Wagner received honorable mention honors in the state rankings at 170 and is looking to be a state medalist for a third consecutive year.
Wagner took eighth as a sophomore and bronze last winter. She took fourth as a freshman in the non-PIAA sanctioned state tournament. Last year was her fourth straight year being a Central Regional runner-up and third straight year taking silver at the District 5-6-9 championships.
Davis is having a solid season for Williamsport this year as a senior as she’s 24-10. She was a runner-up at regionals at 190 and is set to face Lampeter Strasburg’s Kinsley Ferreira in the first round, who’s 29-5. The top seed is Quakertown’s Caroline Hattala who is 35-1.
Davis is a senior and this is her first trip to the state tournament. Expect her to be motivated to make it one to remember and try to reach the podium.
