Williamsport’s Evan Summers takes silver in 100 breast, best finish for WAHS in 50 years

LEWISBURG — Williamsport’s Evan Summers had an outstanding sophomore season a year ago by taking home a third-place medal.

It was the highest podium finish for a Millionaire swimmer since 1976 when Chip Frazir took silver in the 100 fly.

On Thursday, Summers upped his sophomore performance and equaled Frazier’s storied finish 50 years ago.

Summers swam a great time of 54.25 to take silver in the 100 breast and was behind only La Salle College senior Kyle Spaman’s 53.83. Summers swam a 53.77 in the prelims, the best time in the prelims and a time that would have been good for gold..

He was one of just four swimmers to break the 55-second mark along with Adam Barlow of Liberty (54.68, third) and Methacton’s Kelly Sommer (54.84, fourth).

Summers was Williamsport’s only state qualifier this year and made his trip to states one to remember.

Summers became the first non-diver from Williamsport to medal in consecutive seasons. The only other Williamsport athlete to do so was diver Karen Starley in 1989 and 1990 when she took seventh and fifth, respectively. No other swimmer, however, ever accomplished the feat prior to Summers on Thursday.

Starting at $2.99/week.
