Block sets goals record, as Lyco women’s lacrosse cruises past Wilkes

EDWARDSVILLE – Senior Riley Block broke one more school record, the mark for goals in a career, as she posted 12 scores in her final game, a 15-8 win for the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team against Landmark Conference foe Wilkes University, on Wednesday night at Schmidt Stadium.

Block finished the game with 12 goals and two assists to give her 112 points off 96 goals and 16 assists this year, just one point shy of Meghenn Jackson ’16’s school record mark of 113 points. However, needing five goals to break the school’s career goals record of 284 held by Kelly McGinniss ’19, Block blasted past that with 12, scoring the record-breaking goal with 4:23 left in the second quarter before scoring two more in the first half and five in the second half.

Block finished her career with Lycoming records for goals in a game (14), season (96) and career (292) and points in a game (17) and career (349). She leads Division III with 6.00 goals per game and is fourth with 7.00 points per game and she finished tonight 20th in NCAA Division III history with 292 career goals.

For good measure, Block also added 12 draw controls and caused six turnovers in the win.

First-year Molly Giufre finished with two goals and an assist, junior Sarah Spring – a Williamsport graduate – added a goal and junior Mychaela McDowell added an assist. Sophomore Summer Emlet caused three turnovers and first-year Rachel Crawford added two caused turnovers and three ground balls.

Leading 4-3 at the end of the first quarter, the Warriors extended the lead to two goals in the second quarter thanks to four more Block goals. In the second half, the Warriors broke open the game with six goals in a row, four coming from Block and one each from Spring and Giufre, with the run ending with 4:29 left in the fourth and the Warriors leading 14-7.

Sophomore Emma Yanders posted 11 saves and three ground balls to earn the win.

Morgan Hettesheimer and Halie Albright led Wilkes with three goals a piece. Davyn Bonvie finished with seven saves.

The Warriors finished the season 4-12 overall and 1-8 in the Landmark under second-year head coach Meaghan Smith.
