LOCK HAVEN — If you try to measure success simply by podium trips at the Lock Haven High School Classic, you wouldn’t see the small bits of progress and steps in the right direction for Central Mountain’s track and field athletes.
No, the Wildcats didn’t see anyone place in the top-3 for the podium, but the Wildcats had boys and girls track athletes see success on Friday afternoon at Lock Haven.
“I am (happy with today),” Central Mountain coach Scott Bair said. “We’re progressing from one week to the next. We did have some good PRs today for some young kids. Some of our freshmen are stepping up and making some noise. Our jumpers did well today as well.”
On the girls side of things, Central Mountain had two athletes finish fifth.
Standout Central Mountain hurdler Macia Owens placed fifth in the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.62 as Williamsport’s Aubrey Phillips-Cobb broke the 15-second mark and ran a 14.98 to break the meet record.

In the high jump, Sofia Kelly was a fifth-place finisher as she cleared 5 feet, 0 inches. The only high jumpers ahead of here were State College’s Josie Younkin (5-4), Williamsport’s Isabelle Morrow (5-4), Altoona’s Taylor Lear (5-2) and Lewisburg’s Lydia Delsite (5-2).
“We’re progressing from one week to the next, that’s all you can ask for,” Bair said.
Damien Winner was Central Mountain’s highest finisher in boys competition as he placed fifth in the 2,000 steeplechase in 6:53.13. The Wildcat was successful in the steeplechase a year prior at Lock Haven as well, showing he does well in distance events and can keep up with talented runners.
Punxsutawney’s Chris Setree won the 2,000 steeplechase in 6:30.88 and Mifflin County’s Hart Oden finished second in 6:39.41.
The Central Mountain girls 400 relay team took sixth as Harper Conklin, Lena Walker, Sarah Hall and Owens ran a time of 52.40, less than a second behind Punxsutawney’s fifth-place finishing team. State College’s 400 relay team broke the meet record by winning in 48.64.

TIM WEIGHT/Special to the Sun-Gazette Central Mountain and Bellefonte runners compete in the 1,600 at the Lock Haven High School Classic on Friday.
In the boys 400 relay, Central Mountain’s team of Ricky Rohrbach, Caden Peterson, Wyatt Heeman and Shayden Hill ran a 45.82 to take eighth. State College ran a 42.98 to see a meet record and win the event.
The foursome of Hill, Brody Rhine, Rorhbach and Heeman took seventh in the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:35.35.
The District 6 championships are coming up fast for Central Mountain, and Bair knows the value of competing in invitationals. That’s why last week’s Bald Eagle Invitational and Saturday’s Lock Haven High School Classic — both at Lock Haven University — were important for the Wildcats to compete in given the amount of outstanding competition from State College, Altoona, Williamsport, Hughesville, Lewisburg and other schools.
“Oh this week was even better than last week,” Bair noted. “We were here last week at their invite. This week you have State College here, Altoona which we’ll see at districts. So the kids kind of see first hand what they’re up against and what they have to bring forward in about three weeks.”
