Hughesville baseball earns big win against Southern Columbia
Nate Bieber, Dylan McConnell and Wynter Foglemen combined on a five-hitter, Jed Abernatha belted two doubles and Hughesville picked up its most impressive win this season, defeating Southern Columbia, 10-2. Hughesville (3-5) held the seven-win Tigers to both their fewest run and hit totals this season with Bieber earning the win and striking out seven in 5 1/3 strong innings. Abernatha drove in two runs and scored twice, while Foglemen, Gage Webb and Chip Fowler also had two hits each. Cameron Walker and Blake Babb doubled, and Hughesville built a 6-0 fifth inning lead. The Spartans then scored four times in the sixth, pushing the advantage to, 10-2.
Logan Kirby produced his third brilliant start this season, allowing just three hits in six innings as Montoursville defeated Central Columbia, 5-1. Kirby improved to 3-0 and has allowed two runs in three starts. He also hit an RBI single as Montoursville (6-1, 5-1 HAC-II) won its fifth straight game. His brother Noah hit a three-run double, and Brody Aldenderfer, Carson Menne and Elijah Eck all had two hits. They combined for four runs as well, helping Montoursville build a 4-0 third inning lead.
Drake Dupont, Bennett Singer and Kayden Keefer all had hits, but Mifflinburg started strong and blanked Loyalsock, 9-0. The Wildcats scored seven runs in the first three innings and in five of their first six at-bats.
Five Cowanesque Valley players produced multi-hit performances, helping the Indians stay unbeaten in league play with an 11-3 win against Northeast Bradford. The Indians (8-1, 4-0 NTL-II) scored the game’s final 10 runs and winning pitcher Dave Hess went 3 for 5 with a double, while throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Levi Stahli also had three hits and Lucas Hamilton belted two doubles. Ayren Morgan and Hunter Simonds also had two hits each.
–Elyna Booth threw a five-hit shutout and struck out seven, helping North Penn-Liberty win a hard-fought 1-0 contest against Wyalusing. Booth has allowed just one run in her last two starts against two of the NTL’s top teams in Athens and Wyalusing. Kameron Lightner and Haley Litzelman both had two hits and Claire Dominick roped a double. Dominick’s RBI single scored Litzelman for the game’s lone run in the third inning as North Penn-Liberty (7-2) won its sixth straight game.
Eva Sockman had a big day, going 4 for 4 with two triples and four RBIs as Bucktail blanked Benton, 19-0 in three innings. Kelsie Wagner doubled twice and drove in a run, while Kendall Wagner was 2 for 2 with a double and four RBIs. Carrie Ditty and Kelsie Wagner combined on a one-hitter with Ditty striking out six in two innings. She also went 3 for 3 with three RBIs.
–Jersey Shore won all five matches in straight sets, cruising to a 5-0 win against Milton. Ryder Fink did not drop a game at No. 1 singles and neither Ezra Paulhamus or Seth Hensler, as well as the doubles teams, lost more than two games in any set.
Carson Harris rallied from a set down to win in three sets at No. 1 singles, highlighting South Williamsport’s, 4-1 victory against Muncy. Harris took the final two sets, 6-4, 7-5. Dylan Webb also won at singles as did the doubles teams of Levi Jackson and David Miller and Nate Miller and Noonie Davenport. Clynt Oden won at No. 2 singles for Muncy.
–Sophomores Sadie Stahl – a South Williamsport graduate – and Yeanneth Rosado both took victories in singles play for the Lycoming College women’s tennis team, which fell 5-2 to Goucher College in Landmark Conference action on Wednesday at Brandon Park.
Lycoming (2-12, 0-7 Landmark) earned their victories when Stahl defeated Goucher’s Meline Siggen 6-3 and 7-5 at No. 2 singles and Rosado gutted out a 7-5, 3-6 (10-5) victory over Kendra Lanese at No. 5 singles. The Warriors will be back in action on Saturday for a home Landmark Conference match against Drew University at 1 p.m.
The Lycoming College men’s tennis team fell, 7-0, in a Landmark Conference matchup against Goucher College on Wednesday at Brandon Park. Goucher moves to 8-6 on the year and 4-2 in the Landmark, while Lycoming fell to 3-9 overall and 0-7 in conference play. The Warriors will be back in action on Thursday for a non-conference matchup against Penn State-Altoona at 4:30 p.m.
