Local roundup: Friel throws one-hit shutout as Montoursville blanks Warrior Run 1-0
Julie Friel continued her outstanding senior season, pitching and hitting Montoursville into the playoffs Thursday afternoon. Friel threw a one-hit shutout, struck out nine and hit an RBI single as the Warriors blanked Warrior Run, 1-0 and clinched a District 4 Class AAA playoff berth.
Montoursville (10-5, 7-1) also stayed tied for first with Loyalsock in the HAC-II. Friel retired 21 of 23 batters, walked none and drove in Trinity Belle with the game’s lone run in the fourth inning. Harlee Hagemeyer went 1 for 1. Friel threw 64 of her 87 pitches for strikes. Mackenzie Litchard threw six strong innings of three-hit ball for Warrior Run and struck out five.
Jenna Houseknecht and Arianna Snyder combined on a one-hit shutout and Montgomery pounded out 14 hits as it blanked Benton, 15-0 in four innings. Houseknecht also went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Chloe Gordner went 3 for 3 with two RBIs. Addison Greger doubled, went 2 for 3 and produced three RBIs, while Brooke Dietrich and Madie Hamm each had two hits with two RBIs.
Hailey Adams and Sophie Maiorana both had singles, but they were the lone hitters as Muncy was blanked against CMVT, 7-0.
CMVT led 2-0 after the second inning and made it a 3-0 lead after the third.
North Penn-Liberty won an eight-inning thriller over Troy, 4-2. The Mounties had a total of five extra-base hits, including a home run by Maddie Smith (2 for 4). Haley Litzelman went 3 for 4 with a double and triple and a team-high two RBIs.
In the circle, Elyna Booth struck out nine.
Lewisburg came up just shy against Shamokin, falling 8-7. The Indians took advantage of 11 walks and three errors in addition to six singles.
Brinley Haile led the Green Dragons with a 3 for 4 day at the plate with a double, triple and two RBIs. Morgan Shannon (2 for 4, RBI, run) and Tymber Jamieson (1 for 4) also had doubles for the Green Dragons.
• Cowanesque Valley scored multiple runs in all four at-bats and won its seventh straight game, routing Williamson, 17-3 in five innings. Nine players had hits for the Indians (14-1) who erased a 2-0 first inning deficit with a seven-run burst in the bottom half. Four pitchers combined on a two-hitter and Levi Stahli went 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs.
Marek Mascho had a double, the only extra-base hit for Wellsboro and pitched a complete game, throwing all seven innings with just three singles allowed and six strikeouts as the Green Hornets beat Towanda at home, 2-0.
Wellsboro scored both of its runs in the bottomof the second inning.
• Central Mountain defeated Williamsport, 4-1, in boys tennis. Williamsport recognized its lone senior Wyatt Judge and Judge and his doubles partner at No. 1, Charles Plummer, had an exciting three-set match.
Ben Brinker and Gage Scanlan won over the Millionaire pair, 6-4, 6-7 (10-12), 6-4.
Joey McCluskey of Central Mountain beat Howard Chen at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-2. Williamsport’s Joseph Hillman beat Brayden Spedding, 6-2, 6-1
Jersey Shore edged Montoursville, 3-2, thanks to sweeping the singles competition. Ryder Fink earned a 6-0, 6-0 win over Teli Bobotas at No. 1 singles, Era Paulhamus beat Gio Catino 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and at No. 3 singles, Saul Hensler defeated Colby Ulmer, 9-7, 6-1.
Montoursville’s Cole Snyder and Rain Snyder beat Abram Paulhamus and Luke Sarge at No. 1 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Loyalsock’s Elijah Lin secured an exciting 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win against Danville standout David Sommer at No. 1 singles, but Loyalsock fell to the Ironmen, 3-2. At No. 2 singles, Loyalsock’s Nathaniel DePrenda in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
At No. 3 singles, Danville’s Colin Sauers earned a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win over David Bjorkman.
Wellsboro secured a 5-0 win against Muncy. At No. 2 singles, Wellsboro’s Gideon Lawton had a three-set thriller, beating Alec Noviello 6-4, 4-6, 10-3. Mason Brill of Wellsboro beat Clynt Oden at No. 1, -0, 6-1, and at No. 3 singles, Wellsboro’s James Doughtie won via forfeit.
RJ Doughtie and Fen Moyer beat Aiden Murphy and Steven Fox at No. 1 doubles, 6-0, 6-0 while Tavi Wyman and Stephen Porier beat Bryce Eckard and Alex Puzio, 6-1, 6-3.
Lewisburg blanked Hughesville, 5-0, to improve to 12-3. Canyon Swartzentruber beat Kevin Bobak at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-0 and at No. 2 singles, Lewisburg’s Luke Azeredo earned a 6-2, 6-1 win against Luke Ragan. Leiwsburg’s Mason Dwyer had a good matchup at No. 3 singles against Luke Vermeire, as the Green Dragon won, 4-6, 6-1, 10-6 (tiebreaker).
• Mansfield’s Cahsid Raymond reset his own 200 dash record during the Maroon and Gold Invitational. Raymond clocked in at a blistering 20.91 seconds. It ranks him as the 17th fastest time in Division II this season.
Mansfield had a strong contingent in the 200 with Dominic Bill (22.26), Lovett Davenport (Personal Best, 22.75), Jerry Holmes Jr. (Personal Best, 22.88), Joseph Fry (Personal Best, 23.50), William Posey III (Personal Best, 23.61) Ray Kasili (23.82), Ajani Gibson (24.11), Antonio Green Jr. (24.16) Josh Culver (24.65), David Martinez (25.58), and Dorrian McCargo (27.97) competing.
On the women’s side for Mansfield, freshman Alyssa Parks broke the Mansfield 400 hurdle record. Parks clocked in at 1:04.62, which breaks the record set by Abbie Waltz in 2011. The time is also an automatic PSAC Championship qualifying time. Amiyah Nguyen earned her first win on the season in the 100 dash with a time of 12.77. Sandra Lemus had a time of 13.09.
Wyoming Trudeaux took victory in the 200 dash with a season best time of 26.22. Nguyen finished second with a personal best 26.74. Lemus finished with a time of 28.27.
Marissa Allen ran a personal best 4:58.36 in the 1,500, Mayla Falank ran a personal best 5:25.15.
