Local roundup: Loyalsock boys tennis edges out Wellsboro 3-2
Loyalsock’s boys tennis team secured a 3-2 win against Wellsboro thanks to winning two of the three singles matchups.
Elijah Lin beat Luke Rothermel at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 7-5 and at No. 3 singles, David Bjorkman posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over RJ Doughtie. Wellsboro’s Mason Brill beat Nathaniel DePrenda at No. 2 singles, 6-4, 7-6 (7-1).
In doubles competition, Wellsboro’s Tavi Wyman and Stephen Poirier beat Luke Edmonds and Trent Miller in a three-set exciting contest 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
South Williamsport beat North Penn-Liberty, 5-0. Carson Harris earned a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 1 singles over Ray Nickerson and Sawyer Fry won at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0 against Silas Boiywo. At No. 3 singles, Dylan Webb earned a 6-1, 6-1 win against Ayden Deitrick.
In doubles action, South Williamsport’s Levi Jackson and David Miller beat Andre Reed and Toby Nolt, 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1, and at No. 2 doubles, South Williamsport’s team of Nate Miller and Ethan Gardner earned a 6-4, 6-3 win vs. Jediel Ocasio-Vazquez and Dan Fortney.
Muncy lost a tough contest to Selinsgrove, 3-2, to fall to 1-3. The Indians won at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, but a sweep of doubles competition helped Selinsgrove secure the win.
Muncy’s Clynt Oden beat Joaquin Basu at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-2 and at No. 3 singles, Alec Noviello secured a 6-3, 6-4 win against Nathan Lauver.
Selisnsgrove’s John Ke and Grant Renn beat Aiden Murphy and Steven Fox at No. 1 doubls, 6-2, 6-2 and at No. 2 doubles, Noah Scholl and Wyat Waller secured a 6-4, 6-1 win against Muncy’s team of Bryce Eckard and Alex Puzio.
Lewisburg moved to 8-2 with a 4-1 win over Shikellamy. The Green Dragons’ only loss came at No. 2 doubles.
In singles competition, Tyson Nicholls beat Carson Faust in three sets, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. Colby Jacob of Lewisburg beat Ryley McDonald 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 at No. 2 singles and at No. 3, Clark Nicholls earned a three-set win 6-1, 2-6, 6-3 against Andy Faust.
Lewisburg’s doubles team of Canyon Swartzentruber and Luke Azeredo beat Ben Zimmerman and Kinsley Erb, 6-0, 6-3.
• Mya Lehman turned South Williamsport’s softball field into her own personal launching pad and put together one of the most dominant offensive performances in Jersey Shore softball history Friday afternoon. Lehman walloped three home runs, including a first inning grand slam, and drove in eight runs as Jersey Shore won, 17-4 in five innings.
Lehman went 3 for 3 and also walked as the Bulldogs (5-2) erupted for 13 runs in the first two innings. Amelia Thomas also had a strong day, delivering three hits and two RBIs. Lynna Clark doubled twice and scored twice, while Annika Clark also had two hits and two RBIs. Mikaiya Hills and Maddie Pinkerton each had two hits for South, Pinkerton driving in two runs. Emma McLaughlin played super defense at third base and had a hit and a run.
Addison Greger continued her strong season for Montgomery, collecting two hits in an 8-0 loss at Wyalusing. Zoe Furman also had a hit for the Red Raiders (5-2).
North Penn-Liberty scored 10 runs in the first inning and 11 in the second to cruise past Muncy, 21-0, in three innings at home. Muncy was held to no hits as Elyna Booth and Haley Litzelman combined for eight strikeouts in the circle.
Booth went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored while Litzelman had a triple, Julia Kaczynski had a double and Liberty took adantage of 13 walks.
• Cole Deitrick, Deshaun White and Lucas Naughton all launched home runs as Williamsport routed Shamokin, 13-1 in five innings. Deitrick went 3 for 3 with three RBIs and White was 2 for 2 with a double, two RBIs and three runs. Naughton drove in three runs. Zane Rogers belted an RBI triple and Camden March a double. Nate Crowe and Nolan Brelsford combined on a three-hitter with eight strikeouts.
Montoursville also generated some excellent power in a 15-0, five inning win at Milton. Logan Kirby and Brody Aldenderfer each homered and combined for three doubles as the Warriors (4-1) won their third straight. Kirby went 3 for 3 with two doubles and four RBIs and Aldenderfer 2 for 3 with three RBIs and two runs. Cy Heddings added a two-run double and scored twice. Elijah Eck and Emerson Lehman combined on a two-hit shutout, Eck fanning eight in four innings and Lehman two in one.
Mason Winter delivered two hits and drove in three runs, helping Jersey Shore defeat Selinsgrove, 6-3. Carter Rhinehart also had two hits, scoring three times and adding a RBI. Nolen Pauling doubled and scored twice and Tucker Hanna had a hit, RBI and walk. Pauling earned his third win on the mound before Hayden Kelley and Landon Lathan threw well in relief.
• Keiva Middleton and Talia Ross limited Millersville to one run over 14 innings to lead the Lock Haven softball team to a 2-1, 2-0 sweep in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division doubleheader.
Lock Haven 19-13 overall and 9-7 in the PSAC East. Millersville moves to 17-15 on the season and 7-9 in the conference.
Lock Haven continues to roll and have now won eight of their nine games to vault right into the heart of the PSAC postseason chase. Depending on today’s action around the conference, the Bald Eagles could jump into a tie for third and just one game out of first.
• Lock Haven basketball student-athletes Rhlyn Rouse (women’s basketball) and Blake Deegan (men’s basketball) were named to the Winter Academic All-Conference team when the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference announced the latest awardees for its newest academic honor.
• The Mansfield University track and field team competed at the SU Multi hosted by Susquehanna Marcus Quaker once again showed out with a record breaking score of 6,479 points in the decathlon.
Alyssa Parks finished second overall and now has the second best heptathlon record with a total of 3,808 points, in her first ever attempt.Quaker had tremendous growth since last years decathlon performance at the PSAC Outdoor Championship, finishing seventh overall.
Alannah Irwin represented the Lock Haven women’s track and field team at the Susquehanna Multi. Irwin took ninth in the Maroon Division by finishing with 3,047 points.
Irwin’s weekend was highlighted by a fourth-place finish in the javelin. Irwin reached a mark of 83 feet, 6 inches.
Irwin took fifth in the 200 and crossed the finish line in 28.43. She also earned a fifth-place finish in the long jump by reaching 15-8 3/4.
On the men’s side, Jersey Shore graduate Nick Bellomo took ninth in the Orange Division by finishing with 6,407 points for Lock Haven.
Bellomo’s weekend was highlighted by a second-place finish in the pole vault. Bellomo cleared a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Championship qualifying mark of 14-5 1/4.
Bellomo also placed third in the javelin when he reached a mark of 162-2.
• Mansfield’s baseball team fell in a doubleheader to East Stroudsburg in a PSAC East contest, 7-4 and 4-2.
East Stroudsburg started with a strong unanswered five innings scoring all seven of their runs. Peter Tadic finally opened the scoring up in the sixth inning with a single to right field, allow allowing Kahale Burns to score.
