Local roundup: Molina’s eighth-inning single helps South baseball win thriller

Marc Molina ripped a go-ahead RBI single in the top of the eighth inning and Kamdyn Bubb stifled Hanover in the bottom half as South Williamsport won a 2-1 thriller against Hanover. Bubb and starter Andrew Walter both pitched four strong innings, walking none and repeatedly working out of jams. Bubb fanned four in four innings and Walter threw four scoreless innings. Molina also produced a first-inning RBI with a sacrifice fly and was one of nine Mounties who combined for 11 hits. Bubb and Jaymes Carpenter collected two each.

Graden Dohl smashed a two-run home run and Kynton Fish and Brody Goss each had two hits in Muncy’s 15-5, six-inning loss against Bloomsburg. Corbyn Gardner added a double. Bloomsburg started the game with 10 runs in the top of the first inning before Muncy scored four times in the bottom half.

Ayren Morgan, Hunter Simonds and Levi Stahli combined on a three-hitter and Cowanesque Valley remained undefeated, downing North Penn-Mansfield, 4-1. Morgan became the sixth different pitcher to earn a win for the Indians (6-0) and also was 2 for 2 with two runs. Hess and William Kies drove in runs and Danny Smith doubled. Three players had hits for North Penn-Mansfield.

Wellsboro scored 10 runs to defeat Troy in five innings, 10-0. The Green Hornets jumped out to an early 4-0 lead and led 7-0 after two innings.

Max Mascho went 2 for 3 at the plate with a double. Cameron Owelett was 2 for 3 wtih four RBIs and Reed Richardson had a double. Mascho also threw all five innings with six strikeouts, two singles allowed and just two walks.

• Wellsboro earned an exciting 9-8 win agaisnt Troy in softball. Mazie Johnson was walked in the bottom of the seventh on four pitches. Harleigh Cleveland had a sac bunt, which Troy’s first baseman mishandled, allowing Johnson to score the game-winning run.

Ady Frantz struck out an impressive 14 while allowing just three singles. Troy did take advantage of seven walks, however. Frantz went 2 for 4 with a double and RBI.

Wellsboro saw Delaney Morral go 3 for 4 with three doubles. Genai Fleming as 2 for 4 as well.

• Montoursville’s tennis team made quick work of Shikellamy, winning all five matches in straight sets. Teli Bobotas, Gio Catrino and Colby Ulmer all won without allowing their opponent to win more than two games in a set. The Doubles teams of Cole Snyder and Rain Snyder and Cullen Pauling and Mason Fry won their matches, while dropping just three combined games.

Bryce Eckard and Alex Puzio won a second set tie-breaker to take a straight-set doubles match, highlighting Muncy’s 4-1 win at North Penn-Liberty. Michael Howard, Clynt Oden and Alec Noviello all won straight set singles matches in convincing fashion. North Penn-Liberty’s doubles team of Andre Reed and Toby Noll won a hard-fought three-set match, rallying after dropping the first set and winning the final one, 10-7.

Both of South Williamsport’s doubles teams took their opponents three sets in a 5-0 loss against Central Columbia. Levi Jackson and David Miller took the first set, 7-5 in No. 1 doubles before dropping the third set in a super tiebreaker. Cameron Stahl and Nate Miller took the second set of their match, 6-2 to force a third set.

• Senior Riley Block (Hopatcong, N.J./Morris Catholic) scored six goals and an assist to move into the top spot on the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse program’s career points list, highlighting a 13-9 setback to Goucher College in Landmark Conference action.

Block, the NCAA leader in goals (6.36) and Division III leader in points (7.45) entering the game, matched her pace with six goals and an assist to give her 326 points in her career, breaking the mark of 319 points set by Kelly McGinniss ’19 with her first goal of the evening. She also moved into fourth in program history with 76 goals this season, just four from the school record of 80 set by Grace Gargiulo in 2011 and tied by Meghenn Jackson (2016) and Kelly McGinniss (2011). She is 12 goals from McGinniss’ record mark of 284 in a career.

Block broke the points record with her first goal of the game, coming 4:26 into the contest. She added one more goal in the quarter, one in the second quarter and then broke through with three goals in the third quarter, helping the Warriors (3-9 overall, 0-5 Landmark) during a four-goal run to close from a 10-5 deficit to come within a goal as the fourth quarter started.

• Freshman Samuel Hall scored a pair of fourth-quarter goals to lead the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team as it fell, 20-4, in a Landmark Conference matchup to Goucher College.

Goucher (5-8, 2-3 Landmark) scored four times in the first period and eight more times in the second before Lycoming (2-9, 0-5 Landmark) first-year Garis Tocco found the back of the net for the Warriors’ first score 49 seconds before halftime.

The other three Lycoming goals came in the fourth, with Hall scoring back-to-back goals just under four minutes apart in the first half of the period. Following the final Goucher goal, junior Brogan Wooley buried an unassisted goal with 17 seconds left to round out the scoring.

• The Lycoming College men’s tennis team fell to Susquehanna University, 7-0, in Landmark Conference action at the SU Tennis Courts.

Lycoming is 2-6 overall and 0-4 in Landmark play and Susquehanna improved to 7-4 and 2-3 in the Landmark.

The Warriors are back in action on Thursday, April 9, when they face King’s (Pa.) in non-conference action at 3 p.m., at Brandon Park.

• Seniors Megan Klansek, Megan Lonergan and Anasten Holbrook all earned selection to the College Sports Communicators Women’s Swimming and Diving Academic All-District Team, as announced by the organization.

Lonergan finished her career with a 16th-place finish in the 1,650 free at tnhe Landmark Conference Championships with a season-best time fo 20:51.55 and claimed seven top-3 finishes throughout her senior campaign.

Klansek closed out her career wtih a 19th-place finish in the Landmark Conference Championships in the 100 back with a season-best time of 1:13.60. She also posted a season-best mark of 1:04.97 in the 100 free at the season-closing meet.

Hollbrook finshed her college career on a strong note, finishing 15th in the 200 back at the Landmark Conference Championships, posting a personal best of 2:37.06.
