Local roundup: Montgomery baseball beats Mid-Penn rival Muncy 11-0 in five innings
Briar Persing was dialed in on the mound and at the plate. The Bennett family had a big day, too, as Montgomery took control of the Mid-Penn West Division race, blanking rival Muncy, 11-0 in five innings. Persing threw a one-hit shutout and struck out nine, while going 3 for 4 with a home run, double, two RBIs and two runs.
The Bennett brothers both also homered and had two hits. Parker Bennett drove in three runs and scored twice, while Chase produced the same. Cooper Roman went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and Lincoln Miller and Gage Furman both doubled, helping Montgomery (7-1, 4-0) win its sixth straight game. Jameson Barlow had a hit for Muncy (3-3, 2-1).
Freshman Ryder Breon went 3 for 3 with a triple and four RBIs, helping North Penn-Mansfield thump Wyalusing, 14-4 in five innings. The Tigers scored six second inning runs, five in the fourth and three in the fifth to end it early. Andy Hermansen had two hits, a double and RBI, while Kameron House had a hit and two RBIs. Isaac Sparks threw 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out five and earning the win.
After Troy scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning to tie the game up at 4-all, Wellsboro proceeded to score four unanswered runs to win, 8-4. Both teams collected seven hits.
Coen Tennis had a home run and led Wellsboro with a team-high three RBIs as he went 2 for 4 with a run scored.
Reed Richardson (1 for 3, RBI), Max Mascho (1 for 3, run), Marek Mascho (1 for 4, RBI), Gabe Cuneo (1 for 1, two RBIs, two runs) and Griffin Morral (1 for 3, RBI, run, walk) all helped lead Wellsboro.
• Maddie Pinkerton hit a first-inning single but undefeated Northwest broke open a close game with 12 fifth inning runs, defeating South Williamsport, 15-0. Jenna Roboczewski and Ava Ruckle both hit home runs during that fifth inning.
Lewisburg took a one-run lead in the bottom of the second inning against Midd-West, but the Mustangs exploded for 13 runs in three innings to put the mercy rule into effect and win, 17-5, in just six innings.
Midd-West took advantage of nine walks and six errors. The Mustangs also had two doubles, a triple and home run.
Siani Turner hit a double for Lewisburg and scored twice while Tymber Jamieson went 1 for 1 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored.
Eight players produced 21 hits and Williamsport hit .500 as a team, routing Shikellamy, 17-8 to stay undefeated.Kinsley Cannode and Bella Reddy each had four hits, while winning pitcher Ashlyn Robinson and Brenna Beck had three each. Cannode doubled twice, drove in runs and scored four times, while Reddy had two RBIs, Beck three and Robinson two with a double. Payton Pennycoff, Jayda Fink and Brynlee Engel added two hits each. Robinson allowed just one earned run and Williamsport (7-0) overcame five errors.
• Loyalsock earned a 4-1 win in boys tennis action over Bloomsburg on the road. The Lancers won two of the three singles matchups and swept the doubles competition.
Elijah Lin won 6-4, 6-1 against Marc-Alexi Dobbins at No. 1 singles. At No. 2 singles, the Lancers saw Ian Bower beat Will Keller in three sets. After dropping the first set, 6-2, Bower rattled off back-to-back 6-3 wins to secure the victory.
In doubles action, Daniel Taormina and Marco Blas beat Pret Patel and Kiernan Adams in three sets, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1, 6-1.
Luke Edmonds and Trent Miller were in for a battle at No. 2 doubles against Dylan Kritzer and Owen Chen. The Lancer duo won 7-6 (8-6), 6-4.
• Milton saw success in a road tri-meet with Midd-West and Mifflinburg in track and field competition. On the boys side of things, Joseph Nietling won the 300 hurdles in 44.43 for the Black Panthers as teammate Jake Hirrs took second in 44.66.
Kamryn Wilson cleared 37 feet, 2 3/4 inches to win the triple jump, beating teammate Ja’Cori Brown of Milton (35-11).
Milton’s Lucas Shearer won the pole vault with a height of 11-0.
In the shot put, Milton senior Darren Bentley threw 43-9 to win.
In girls competition, Milton sophomore Hayden Snyder ran a 1:01.51 to win the 400. The Black Panthers saw Jayanah Jones (16.75) and Evalynn Keister (17.00) go 1-2 in the 100 hurdles. Keister won the 300 hurdles in 50.00.
Elizabeth Schrock of Milton won the high jump with a height of 4-10 as the Black Panthers went 1-2-3. Milton’s Keturah Rice (4-8) took second and Jones (4-6) was third. Jones also won the long jump with a leap of 16-1 as Schrock took seocnd (15-7 1/2).
Schrock won the triple jump with a leap of 35-0 and Jones took second (34-10). Milton’s Makenna Wallace won the pole vault by clearing 8-0. Milton also saw Marlee Lenig take first in the discus with a throw of 106-4 1/2 and Emily Waltman won the javelin with a distance of 122-1.
North Penn-Mansfield’s boys team won a quad meet (116 points) over Williamson (59), Canton (43) and Northeast Bradford (42). On the girls side, Williamson won (99.5) over North Penn-Mansfield (74), Canton (61.5) and Northeats Bradford (25).
In boys competition, Mansfield’s Luke Kreger was a two-event winner as he won the high jump by clearing 6-6 and the long jump wtih a leap of 19-1 1/2. Mansfield’s Colton Pellett jumped 38-0 to win the triple jump. In the shot put, Canton’s Wyatt Hilton threw 43-9 1/2 to win.
Mansfield’s Deakon Valentine was also a two-event winner. Valentine won the discus by throwing 133-5 and won the javelin by throwing 146-2.
Williamson’s Joshua Teague won the 100 in 11.70 and Hayden Plunkert won the 200 in 24.30. Mansfield’s Braden Vanloon won the 400 with at iem of 43.80 and Mansfield’s Michael Knefley won the 800 in 2:05.00. Williamson’s Gabriel Crance won the 3,200 with a time of 11:01.00.
Canton’s John Whitehead won the 110 hurdles in 19.00 and Williamson’s Ben Bower won the 300 hurdles in 46.40.
On the girls side, Canton’s Hayley Larsen won the 100 in 13.84 and the 200 in 28.84. Williamson’s Madalynn Bailey was a three-event winner as she ran a 1:01.70 to win the 400 and a 2:31.00 to win the 800. Bailey also won the long jump with a distance of 16-8 1/4.
Canton’s Alexis McRoberts won the shot put with a throw fo 39-5 and the disucs with a throw of 126-4 1/2.
• Freshman Tre Lesperance medaled with a 78 and junior Will Eberz carded an 82 to lead the Lycoming College golf team to a five-stroke win over King’s College, 332-337, in a dual meet at the par-71, 6,286 yard Wyoming Valley Country Club.
Lesperance topped the field of 12 golfers by two strokes and Eberz finished third with an 82. To round out the scoring four, freshman Colby Seiler and junior Connor Shanahan both carded an 86 to finish tied for fifth.
Freshman Hill Meserve posted an 87 and senior Karson Kline added an 88.
The Lock Haven women’s golf team wrapped up its regular season at the Bedford Springs Invitational at the Bedford Springs Resort.
The Bald Eagles took second place out of five teams, shooting a 384 on the historic, challenging course with a tough layout (6023-yards).
Hannah Kopac led the Bald Eagles and finished in second place out of the 27 competing individuals by shooting a career-best 85.
• The Lycoming College women’s tennis team beat Juniata College, 7-0, in Landmark Conference action. Sophomore Sadie Stahl, a South Williamsport graduate, won her first set at No. 2 singles before Celia Navarro came back to win the final two sets.
Juniata improved to 6-5 overall and 3-2 in the Landmark and Lycoming fell to 2-11 and 0-6 in the Landmark.
• The Lycoming College men’s tennis team fell, 7-0, in a Landmark Conference matchup against Juniata College. Juniata moves to 8-4 on the year and 2-3 in the Landmark, while Lycoming fell to 3-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play.
The Warriors will be back in action on for a Landmark Conference match against Goucher College. Opening serve is set for 3 p.m., from Brandon Park.
