Local roundup: Montgomery blanks defending district champ Montoursville 3-0 in baseball
Montgomery made a statement Saturday at Giles Field as Briar Persing threw a four-hit shutout and it blanked defending District 4 Class AAAA champion Montoursville, 3-0. The Red Raiders (9-1) defeated Montoursville for the first time and won their eighth straight game as well.
Persing struck out 10, walked none and threw 65 of 80 pitches for strikes. He also hit an RBI single. Gage Furman had two hits, opening the game with a double and scoring later that inning. Chase Bennett doubled and had two hits and Persing stranded two runners to close out the win. Zack Neill singled twice for Montoursville (6-2) and Logan Kirby doubled.
Hughesville blew past Shamokin, then rallied past Troy and captured the George Zalar Tournament championship, winning 12-1 in six innings against Shamokin before downing Troy, 4-1 in the final. The Spartans (5-5) scored four sixth inning runs in the final, erasing a 1-0 deficit. Gage Webb dominated on the mound, throwing a three-hitter and striking out 10. He closed with six straight scoreless innings. Jed Abernatha had a hit and RBI for Hughesville and Webb also singled, while Cameron Walker drove in a run.
Brett Whitmoyer earned the win against Shamokin, throwing 4 2/3 scoreless innings. Abernatha, Kyler Solomon and Wynter Fogelmen all had two hits.
Abernatha and Solomon doubled and Fogelmen drove in four runs. Aberthan scored four times, Solomon added four RBIs and Walker hit an RBI double.
Corbyn Gardner threw five innings of scoreless baseball, combining with Jameson Barlow and Vinny Finochiaro on a three-hit shutout as Muncy blanked Benton, 8-0. Barlow and Finochiaro closed with two innings of hitless relief. Gardner helped his cause with two hits and two runs. Barlow had a big day with a triple, doubled, four RBIs and two runs. Graden Dohl also doubled.
St. John Neumann scored three runs in the fifth inning to go ahead and secured a 7-2 win from there. Kane Meixel threw five innings and earned the win on the mound with eight strikeouts and five hits allowed.
Avery Taddeo went 2 for 3 with a double, RBI and two runs while Maverick Dunkleberger was 2 for 3 with an RBI, walk and two runs. Meixel (1 for 4) and Clark Bower (1 for 2) also collected singles.
Wellsboro used 16 hits to score 17 runs and defeat Coudersport, 17-2, in six innings. Gabe Cuneo went 3 for 4 with a double, four RBIs and three runs scored, Max Mascho was 3 for 3 wtih a double, two RBIs and scored three runs, Coen Tennis went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs and Madden Mascho finished 2 for 4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Kody Enck added a 3 for 4 performance with a double and two RBIs.
Loyalsock lost a tough matchup to Central Columbia as the Blue Jays scored a run in the fifth and sixth to secure a narrow 3-2 win.
The Lancers were led by Kayden Keefer (1 for 2, two runs), Drake Dupont (1 for 3, RBI0, Nolan Rall (1 for 3) and Bennett Singer (1 for 3). The Blue Jays ended the game with seven hits.
Cowanesque Valley went 2-0 on Saturday, beating Sayre, 11-1 in five innings, and Northern Potter, 7-4.
The Indians capitalized on 11 Sayre errors and eight hits to defeat the Redskins. Cowanesque Valley scored in every inning. The Indians were led by Lucas Hamilton’s 2 for 4 efforts. Camden Stahli threw three innings and Jacob Whitesell closed the final two out as the duo struck out six and issued just one walk.
Against Northern Potter, Cowanesque Valley jumped out to four fast runs in the first and held on from there to secur the win and never let Northern Potter take a lead.
Levi Stahli went 2 for 4, Ayren organ went 2 for 3 and Dave Hess connected for a double.
• Ella Printzenhoff went 3 for 4 and scored three runs to help Warrior Run secure a close 4-3 win against Jersey Shore as Lydia Keener threw all seven innings and earned the win in the circle.
Maura Woland finished the day 2 for 4 with a run scored for the Defenders as her and Printzenhoff were the only two batters with multiple hits for Warrior Run.
Lexi Frey went 3 for 4 for Jersey Shore while Mya Lehman (2 for 3, RBI) and Aubree Reichard (2 for 3, run) had multple hits. Reichard belted two doubles while Sophia Wrench added a double.
Lewisburg fell in a slug-fest to Bloomsburg, 15-11, in a game which saw a combined 28 hits. Morgan Shannon had a 4 for 5 performance at the plate for the Green Dragons wtih a double, four RBIs and two runs scored.
Nora Hockenbrock went 3 for 3 wtih four runs, Brinley Haile was 2 for 5 with a triple and Meg Mitchell (2 for 3, three runs) and Aaliyah Bleich (3 for 4, two runs) both had multiple hits for Lewisburg.
Bloomsburg was led by Kara Bogdanowicz, who went a perfect 4 for 4 at the plate with two doubles, a triple, four RBIs and scored twice.
Hughesville used a two-run fourth inning to pull away from Wellsboro and secure a 3-1 win against the Green Hornets. Addison Henninger and Maddie Smith combined in the circle to limit the Green Hornets to just four singles.
Adelyn Knight went 1 for 5 with a run, Ashlynn Bartlett went 1 for 4 and Lyla Kinney had an RBI for Hughesville.
Wellsboro was led by Haylie Smith’s 2 for 5 effort.
• Junior Evan Donnelly recorded 26 saves to give him 248 on the season and move him into a tie for third in the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team’s single-season record book, as Lycoming fell to second-place Catholic University of America, 25-1, in Landmark Conference competition.
Freshman Ryan MacElhinney scored Lycoming’s goal with 10:30 left in the game off an assist from junior Brogan Wooley.
Donnelly posted four groundballs and sophomore James Hall-Melnychuck and senior Cole Slezak caused two turnovers and grabbed two groundballs.
Penn College knocked off Cairn University, 25-8, in a United East men’s lacrosse game. The Wildcats improved to 1-1 UE, 12-4 overall, while the Highlanders fell to 0-3, 2-8.
Penn College led 5-2 after the first and 13-2 at halftime. The Wildcats outscored Cairn, 6-2, in the third and 6-4 in the final quarter.
Roman DeCenzo led PCT with five goals, Elliott Dotson and Owen Kupsey both added both and AJ Dotson netted a pair, including the 100th goal of his career. The Dotson brothers both dished out four assists, while Gavin Selchert had three helpers and Tyler Diffenderfer and Chase Kaplan both finished with two assists.
Owen Kovacs celebrated his Senior Day with a career high seven points on five goals and two assists, leading Bucknell to a 15-13 win over Holy Cross at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium. The Bison improved to 8-5 overall and 4-4 in the Patriot League, while Holy Cross fell to 6-7, 2-5.
The Bison moved closer to a Patriot League Tournament berth but have not officially clinched yet. Bucknell finishes the regular season with a non-conference game against UMBC next Friday and will be scoreboard watching with the four league games scheduled for later that evening.
Bucknell took control against Holy Cross early in the third quarter. The Bison led 9-7 at the half, and then Ryan Botek scored one of his five goals two minutes into the half to bring the Crusaders within one. Koavcs answered with back-to-back goals, and then Sean Berrigan added a third in row to open up a 12-8 lead.
• Senior Riley Block netted three goals and an assist to lead the Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team, as it fell to the Catholic University of America, 22-4, in Landmark Conference action.
Block notched her 13th hat trick of the season against the second-place Cardinals (9-6 overall, 7-1 Landmark), also adding a caused turnover and picking up four draw controls. She is four goals from the school’s career record of 284 set by Kelly McGinniss (2016-19).
Freshman Julie Dammes also scored for the Warriors (3-12 overall, 0-8 Landmark) and freshman Molly Giufre had an assist and two ground balls.
Offensive standout Gabby Gunnip recorded eight points and starting goalkeeper Gretchen King made 10 saves as the two Bald Eagles powered the Lock Haven to a 19-6 win over visiting Gannon (4-11, 1-7 PSAC West) in an important late-season PSAC Western Division clash.
The Bald Eagles improved to 9-5 overall and moved to 5-3 in PSAC West play after today’s big win which extended The Haven’s win streak to four games. Lock Haven completed the two-game season sweep of Gannon and also improved to 5-2 at home this season on the Charlotte Smith Field turf.
Gunnip scored five goals and dished out three assists and King made several sensational stops in a tightly contested first half. King’s 10 saves led a strong defensive effort from a unit that only allowed one goal in the second half and pitched a fourth-quarter shutout.
Mansfield dropped a doubleheader to Millersville, falling 13-5 in both contests.
The Marauders opened up the first game with 11 runs by the sixth inning, when the Mountaineers responded. The Mounties picked up five runs in the sixth getting on the scoreboard, 11-5.
Millersville however added two more runs in the seventh to finalize the game 13-5.
In game two, the Marauders scored consistently up until the seventh inning where they sat with a final run count of 13.
• Mansfield split a softball doubleheader against Shepherd, losing the first game, 4-0, before responding with a 9-3 win in the second game.
Mansfield would get great offense in the second game highlighted by Shannon Perlungher’s third homerun of the season. Liliana Moyer would account for two RBI.
Emma Maurer was a standout at the plate and in the circle. Maurer went 3-4 with a double and two RBIs and pitched a complete game with four strikeouts.
Down 2-0 entering the fourth inning, Mansfield broke through on a Maurer single that scored two runs, tying the score 2-2. A few batters later Madison Stahli drew a walk that brought in the go ahead run, up 3-2.
• The Lycoming College men’s tennis team fell 6-0 to Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference action. Sophomore Kayvan Shams, a South Williamsport graduate, won a set in a 6-7 (9-7), 6-3 (10-2) defeat at No. 2 singles against Austin Koehler of Elizabethtown (6-8, 1-8 Landmark).
The Warriors (3-11 overall, 0-8 Landmark) will be back in action on Wednesday at Wilkes University to cap off Landmark Conference play at 3 p.m.
• The Lycoming College women’s tennis team fell 6-0 to Elizabethtown College in Landmark Conference action. Freshman Rayna Burke won a set in a 1-6, 6-0 (10-4) defeat in No. 4 singles against Julia Kiernan of Elizabethtown (4-10, 1-8 Landmark) and teamed up with sophomore Reyna Kirick for a 6-4 defeat in No. 2 doubles.
The Warriors (2-13 overall, 0-8 Landmark) will be back in action on Wednesday at Wilkes University to cap off Landmark Conference play at 3 p.m.
• The Lock Haven men’s outdoor track and field team had a strong showing at the Coach Pollard Invitational by taking first place in four separate events.
Eric Zalar took home gold in the hammer throw with a season-best performance. Zalar reached an NCAA Division II Provisional and PSAC Championship qualifying mark of 194-11 3/4. He currently sits in 24th place in the NCAA Division II rankings.
Zalar’s success did not stop there as he took fourth in the Discus Throw by reaching 150-6 1/2. He also took fifth place in the Shot Put by reaching 48-6 1/4. He earned PSAC qualifiers in both events.
Jakob Rager finished first in the 800 and improved on his personal best with a 1:51.40. The time ranks him second in Lock Haven program history.
• The Lock Haven women’s outdoor track and field team had a strong showing at the Coach Pollard Invitational with many standout performances.
The javelin throw trio of Olivia Spotts, Ava Komorowski and Maria Puglia continued their dominant season with first, second and third-place finishes in the event. Spotts reached a mark of 128-7 1/4, Komorowski landed 127-1 1/4 and Puglia achieved 127-2 1/4.
All three women earned PSAC Championship qualifying marks.
Alyssa VanGorder took first place in the hammer throw. VanGorder reached a PSAC qualifying mark of 160-2 3/4. Reagan Irons and Samantha Trench tied for the first-place medal in the high jump as both women cleared 5-2.
