Local roundup: Shore tennis improves to 16-0 with sweep over Muncy
On Friday afternoon, the Jersey Shore boys tennis team kept rolling. The Bulldogs dropped just four games combined to sweep Muncy in convincing fashion, 5-0, and pick up its 16th win in a row.
In singles, Ryder Fink and Ezra Paulhamus posted clean sweeps at Courts 1 and 2, with Saul Hensler winning by forfeit on Singles Court 3.
Doubles saw a bit more drama.
At Doubles Court 2, Dillon Harsanya and Dylan Hensler battled Muncy’s Bryce Eckard and Alex Puzio through a back-and-forth first set. They were ultimately able to edge out the set, 6-4, before carrying that momentum into a second-set sweep.
On Doubles Court 1, Abram Paulhamus and Luke Sarge made it three clean sweeps for Jersey Shore on the afternoon.
The Williamsport boys tennis team traveled to Shikellamy and beat the Braves, 3-2. Wyatt Judge provided the game-clinching win in a three-set thriller at No. 3 singles, beating Shikellamy’s Andy Foust, 5-7, 6-0, 6-4.
Williamsport’s Spencer Kaar won in straight sets on Singles Court 2, edging out a tough first set. And No. 1 doubles duo Charles Plummer and Mason Robinson edged out a competitive, straight-set win as well.
On the road, South Williamsport handled business against Galeton, winning 4-1 with the help of a doubles sweep. Mountie duos Levi Jackson and David Miller and Cameron Stahl and Nate Miller never surrendered more than three games in a set amidst straight-set victories, dropping just eight combined games.
In singles, Sawyer Fry pulled off a gentleman’s sweep on Singles Court 2, defeating Max Schloegel, 6-1, 6-0. Dylan Webb outlasted Galeton’s Isaac Miller in a hard-fought first set before running away with it in the second, 6-4, 6-2. South’s only loss on the day came in three sets.
Braden Smith scored his first goal of the season with 2:22 remaining in the second overtime period to lift UMBC to a 9-8 win over Bucknell in a non-league matchup on Friday at Messiah’s Witmer Family Lacrosse Stadium. Both teams utilized most of their rosters in their regular-season finales, and the game turned into a battle of backup goalies.
Bucknell (8-6) senior Luke Renaud made eight saves with only three goals against in 40:28 of action, and Billy Stephens was even better for UMBC (6-6), posting nine saves in 20 shutout minutes. Three of those stops came in the first overtime period, when the Bison outshot UMBC 9-0 but could not find the back of the net.
