Local roundup: South baseball rallies to beat North Schuylkill 8-7

South Williamsport’s Comeback Kids struck again Monday. Levi Butler belted a walk-off RBI single and the Mounties rallied from a three-run seventh inning deficit to dramatically defeat North Schuylkill, 8-7. It was the third time in six games that South (5-3) has won a game in its final at-bat, including for a second straight time. The Mounties also have won two games via walk-offs.

Andrew Walter tied the game with a sacrifice fly before Marc Molina walked, setting the stage for Butler who went 2 for 4 with three RBIs. Walter also had two hits. Trace Wertz reached to start the rally, Jaymes Carpenter singled and Cole Gerber and Torin Haug walked. Gerber threw 6 1/3 strong innings, allowing just three hits and striking out six. Kamdyn Bubb homered and earned the win in relief.

Zane Rogers blasted a three-run home run and Giovanni White, Trey Damschroder and Camron Spangler all had two hits, helping Williamsport win its fourth straight game with a 10-6 victory at Selinsgrove.

Damschroder doubled twice, White scored three times and Spangler drove in a run. Camden March and James Naughton both had hits and RBIs and Nolan Brelsford earned the win in relief, throwing two hitless innings.

Aiden Jones used his arm and bat to help Central Mountain blank Jersey Shore, 6-0. Jones threw a masterful one-hit shutout, struck out 10 and went 2 for 4 with two RBIs. Jones mowed through Jersey Shore on 93 pitches as Central Mountain (4-1, 4-0) stayed undefeated in the HAC-I. Hayden Kelley threw well for Jersey Shore, allowing just two hits and one run in five innings.

Parker Bennett formed both a strong pitching and hitting tandem, helping Montgomery defeat Milton, 9-2. The two combined on a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts and also had two hits each. Bennett earned the win, fanning eight in four innings, while hitting two doubles.

Furman struck out five in three scoreless innings and scored twice. Briar Persing went 2 for 3 with a double, two RBIs and two runs as Montgomery (6-1) won its fifth straight game. Lincoln Miller added a double and Montgomery scored in each of the first four innings.

Hughesville erased a five-run, fifth inning deficit, tying it in the top of the seventh, but Bloomsburg walked off with an exciting 9-8 win. Jed Abernatha had a big day for the Spartans, going 3 for 5 with a triple, double, two RBIs and three runs. Gage Webb threw well in relief, allowing a run in 3 1/3 innings and had a hit with three RBIs. Wynter Fogelmen went 1 for 2 with two walks and Nate Bieber had a hit and a run.

• Zaelana Minor slammed a two-out, two-run, tie-breaking homer run in the fifth inning, while Ashlyn Robinson threw a three-hitter as Williamsport defeated Central Mountain, 3-1 in a battle of last year’s co-HAC-I champions. Williamsport (6-0, 4-0) swept the season series from the Wildcats (3-2, 2-2) and Robinson stifled a strong offense, striking out eight.

Minor’s home run broke a 1-1 tie and Katelyn Solomon went 2 for 3 with a double. Brenna Beck doubled and Robinson, Payton Pennycoff, Kinsley Cannode and Mya Ritter all had hits.

Jenna Houseknecht, Addison Greger and Ramona Kroll all produced three hits and combined for 12 RBIs as Montgomery blanked Muncy, 28-0 in four innings. Houseknecht drove in five runs, Kroll four and Greger three while adding a double. Madisyn Miller (2 for 2, 3 RBIs) also doubled as did Brooke Dietrich. In addition to collecting 13 hits, Montgomery (6-2) drew 18 walks. Ava Hartman threw a one-hit shutout, earning the win.

Lewisburg cruised to a 16-0 win against Sugar Valley in three innings as Morgan Shannon and Ellie Heather combined in the shutout no-hitter. The two combined for seven strikeouts.

Brinley Haile had a double and home run for the Green Dragons and had a team-high four RBIs. Shannon went 2 for 2 with a double, three RBIs and run scored with a walk.

• Williamsport suffered a 4-1 loss in boys tennis to Danville on Monday afternoon to drop to 3-6.

The Millionaires’ lone win came at No. 2 singles where Spencer Kaar earned a 6-3, 6-1 win against Donovan Larson. At No. 1 doubles, Parker Gale and Grady Gale beat Wyatt Judge and Charles Plummer, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0.

Colin Sauers of Danville beat Howard Chen, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles and at No. 3 singles, Chris Hand earned a 6-1, 6-3 win against Joseph Hillman.

Lewisburg defeated Loyalsock, 4-1. The Lancers’ lone win came at No. 1 singles where Elijah Lin was able to beat Canyon Swarzentruber.

Henry Heintzelman beat Ian Bower at No. 2 singles, 6-3, 6-3, and Clark Nicholls won by forfeit at No. 3.

In doubles action, Lewisburg’s Tyson Nicholls and Colby Jacob beat Dan Taormina and Marco Blas in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, it as another three-set contest as Olin McIlwaine and Ethan Pilling of Lewisburg beat Luke Edmonds and Trent Miller, 6-0, 4-6, 6-1.

The win moves Lewisburg to 10-2.

Montoursville improved to 7-4 by defeating Shikellamy, 5-0. Teli Bobotas won at No. 1 singles against Carson Foust, 6-1, 3-6, 10-8. Gio Catino won at No. 2 singles by beating Ryley McDonald, 6-3, 6-3 and at No. 3 singles, Colby Ulmer beat Andy Faust, 6-0, 6-0.

Montoursville’s Cole Snyder and Rain Snyder beat Ben Zimmerman and Kinsley Erb, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles and at No. 2 doubles, the Warriors’ duo of Cullen Pauling and Mason Fry beat Gavin Marzyck and Ethan Rorke, 6-3, 6-4.

South Williamsport fell to Wellsboro in boys tennis, 4-1. The Mounties’ only win came at No. 3 singles where Dylan Webb won a three-set thriller.

Webb beat RJ Doughtie in the first set, 6-4, before Doughtie rallied for a 6-2 win in the second set. In the decisive third, Webb won, 6-0.

Wellsboro’s James Doughtie and Gideon Lawton won in three sets against South’s Levi Jackson and David Miller. Doughtie and Lawton won 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).
