Local roundup: South tennis beats Liberty, Towanda in doubleheader

South Williamsport played a doubleheader in tennis on Saturday and beat both North Penn Liberty (5-0) and Towanda (4-1).

Against NortH Penn-Liberty, Carson Harris beat Ray Nickerson at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Sawyer Fry of South Williamsport beat Silas Boiywo, 6-0, 6-0. Dylan Webb of South Williamsport beat Ayden Deitrick at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-2.

Levi Jackson and David Miller earned a 6-3, 6-0 win against Andre Reed and Toby Nolt at No. 1 doubles and at No. 2 doubles, Nate Miller and Ethan Gardner defeated Jediel Ocasio-Vazquez and Dan Fortney, 6-4, 6-3.

Harris fell at No. 1 singles to Towanda’s Bayley Poll, 6-0, 6-1. Fry beat Matrix McCarter at No. 2 singles, 6-1, 6-1 and at No. 3 singles, Webb secured a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kellen Colton.

Williamsport traveled to Hughesville and beat the Spartans, 3-2, to improve to 3-5. Hughesville won two of the three singles matchups.

Kevin Bobak won at No. 1 singles against Howard Chen in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 10-7. At No. 2 singles, Luke Ragan of Hughesville beat Spencer Kaar, 6-1, 7-5. Williamsport’s Joseph Hillman beat Michael Swales, 6-4, 6-1.

In doubles action, the Millionaires swept the competition.

Wyatt Judge and Richard Chen defeated Luke Vermeire and Bailey Springs, 6-3, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, Mason Robinson and Cooper Gutberlet beat Carter Haines and Landon Hill, 6-1, 6-3.

• Easton Waller threw a six-hitter and struck out 14, while Kinsie Phillips went 2 for 3 with two RBIs as Loyalsock produced an impressive 6-4 win against perennial District 2 Class AAAAA contender Abington Heights. Loyalsock (6-1) handed Abington Heights (6-1) its first loss and scored six runs in the first three innings to erase an early two-run deficit and take a four-run advantage.

Waller had a hit with two RBIs and two runs, while Addi Barowy added a hit and two runs, helping Loyalsock win its fifth straight game.

Warrior Run scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull away from Shikellamy and secure a 7-1 win. The Defenders out-hit the Braves, 12-4.

Maura Woland (2 for 3, double), Ella Printzenhoff (2 for 4), Mya Evans (2 for 3, 3B, 2 RBIs, run:, Skye Riegle (1 for 3, triple) and Sienna Wise (1 for 4, double) led the Defenders offensively as Shikellamy was held to four singles.

Ady Frantz recorded her 200th career strikeout and sits at 207 after a 10-7 win against Cowanesque Valley. Frantz went 3 for 3 wtih a triple and grand slam as well in the victory.

• Marek Mascho and Gage Baltzey shined on the mound and at the plate, helping Wellsboro erase an early three-run deficit and defeat defending District 4 Class A champion Cowanesque Valley, 7-5. The Hornets (4-1) handed CV (7-1) its first loss in eight games. Mascho earned the win and had two hits, as well as a double.

Baltzey earned the save, throwing 2 1/3 hitless innings, while going 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. Griffin Morral went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs and Max Mascho added a hit with two RBIs. Lucas Hamilton had a hit and two RBIs for CV.

• Freshman Samuel Hall led the Lycoming College men’s lacrosse team with a goal and two assists and junior goalkeeper Evan Donnelly posted a career-high 24 saves, but Moravian University was able to post a 9-6 Landmark Conference win.

Donnelly was outstanding in net, reaching 24 saves to give him 197 on the season, just three from becoming the 10th Warrior to stop 200 shots in a season. He also added four groundballs and caused two turnovers.

Six Warriors (2-10 overall, 0-6 Landmark) – first-years Ryan MacElhinney, Kyle Kunes, Hall, Garis Tocco and Jack Mulholland and sophomore James Hall-Melnychuck — scored in the contest, while junior Brogan Wooley and sophomore Cesar Carmona-Felipe each had an assist.

• The Lycoming College women’s lacrosse team fell to Moravian University, 20-2, in Landmark Conference action. Senior Riley Block scored two goals, leaving her two shy of the school-record of 80 in a season held by three players and 10 from Kelly McGinniss’s mark of 284 career goals. She also added two ground balls, three caused turnovers and two draw controls.

Senior Autumn Shahan posted three ground balls and two draw controls and freshman Julie Dammes also added three ground balls for the Warriors (3-6 overall, 0-6 Landmark).

Kathryn Hunsinger and Bailey Leatherman each had five goals for Moravian (9-5 overall, 4-2 Landmark) and Melissa Elefonte added four goals and eight assists.

The Lock Haven lacrosse team led from start to finish to soar to a 17-10 victory at Edinboro in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference West contest.vWith the victory, Lock Haven improves to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC West to move into a tie for third place with Indiana (Pa.). Edinboro falls to 2-10 on the season and 0-6 in the conference.

The Bald Eagles jumped out to an 8-2 advantage over the opening 15 minutes, headlined by a hat-trick by Gabby Gunnip and a pair of goals from Lexi Bunk and Makayla Kelley.

Lock Haven extended its lead to 12-3 heading into the break and never looked back to run away with the road victory. Lexi Bunk (four goals, assist), Makayla Kelly (four goals, three assists) and Gabby Gunnip (four goals, three assists) powered the offense with dominant individual efforts.

• The Mansfield softball team, led by pitchers Emma Maurer and Riley Storer, took two games from Millersville, 2-1 and 8-4. Maurer threw 12 strikeouts in a complete game victory of game one. Storer struck out seven batters in game two leading to the win.

Sarah Shupp had a homerun in both games. For her second and third long bomb of the year.

Maurer opened the game striking out seven of the first ten batters in the first game. She only allowed four hits. It’s her second complete game of the season.

Mansfield would score first in the third inning on a solo homerun from Shupp. They added another run the following inning as Kyla Stevenson would single in Maurer. Mansfield led 2-0 heading into the final inning.

• Mansfield’s baseball team lost a doubleheader to East Stroudsburg, 10-0 and 10-3.

In game one, Peter Tadic and Brinden Floyd each recorded hits to lead the Mountaineers offensively, while the pitching staff settled in after a tough start to limit further runs.

Mansfield showed resilience throughout the matchup, battling against a strong East Stroudsburg squad despite the 10-0 final.

• The Lycoming College women’s tennis team fell, 7-0, in a Landmark Conference matchup at the Catholic University of America. Catholic moves to 8-8 on the year and 5-0 in the Landmark, while Lycoming fell to 2-10 overall and 0-5 in conference play.

The Warriors will be back in action on Tuesday, April 14 for a Landmark Conference match against Juniata College. Opening serve is set for 3 p.m. From Brandon Park.

• Freshman Tre Lesperance fired an 8-over-par 80 to finish the first day of the Salisbury Sea Gull Invitational in a tie for ninth in a 52-player field to lead the Lycoming College golf team at the par-72, 6,631-yard Green Hill Country Club.

Lesperance finished the first day of the tournament by firing a 2-over-par 38 on the back nine, birdying the par-4, 311-yard No. 13 and the par-5, 485-yard No. 15.

Junior Will Eberz posted a 12-over-par 84 to finish 22nd and junior Connor Shanahan finished with a 13-over-par 85 to place 28th. Rounding out the scoring four, freshman Hill Meserve posted a 14-over-par 86, giving the team a score of 334 to finish in eighth in the 10-team field. Freshman Colby Seiler was 15-over-par with an 87.

• The Lock Haven men’s track and field team competed at the Messiah Invitational. Anthony Marchetti finished fourth in the 10,000. Marchetti crossed the finish line in 33:33.11.

Lorenzo Thompson took fifth in the 400 by running a 50.60.

Gage Chipeleski, Lukas Epitropakis, Dylan Cassetori and Ryan Williams combined to take sixth in the 400 relay by finishing in 43.91.

Shawn Hertzog took sixth in the High Jump by clearing 5 feet, 11 1/2 inches.

Ridge Snyder, Dylan Way, Aden Howell and Sage Carr took eighth in the 1,600 relay. The Bald Eagle quartet finished in 3:41.25.

• The Lock Haven women’s golf team returned to action on Saturday by competing in the Susquehanna Spring Invitational. Lock Haven finished sixth out of a deep field of 14 teams with a team score of 385.

Susquehanna won the Invite with a 344 and Wooster finished second with a score of 346.

Bree Johnson led the way by shooting a career-best 91 to place in a tie for 19th out of a field of over 70 total golfers.

Hannah Kopec and Macy Trostle both finished tied for 26th with individual scores of 95, while Skyler Pentz and Olivia Hutton both shot a 104 to round out the top four.
