Lycoming sweeps Drew in pair of nailbiters in softball competition

Freshman Sage Smeltz threw a three-hit shutout in game one and sophomore Ashley Forrest capped a two-out rally in the seventh inning of game two with a walk-off line single to center field to lift the Lycoming College softball team to a sweep of Drew University, 2-0 and 6-5, in Landmark Conference action on Saturday.

Senior Mallory Rodarmel, a Loyalsock graduate, drilled two-out two-run fourth inning homer to highlight the Lycoming offense in the first game, as it posted the 2-0 win.

Rodarmel hit a 1-1 pitch on a rope over the center field fence after senior Hailee Sobieski doubled with one out, as the two fourth-inning hits represented half of Lycoming’s offense in the game.

Meanwhile, Smeltz allowed three hits and three walks, allowing just one runner to reach third, who was quickly doubled off to end the third inning on a lineout to senior shortstop Claire Alexander, a South Williamsport graduate. She struck out six in her first collegiate shutout.

Gabby Duran pitched a complete-game four-hitter, allowing two runs.

In the second game, the Warriors rallied with a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off with a 6-5 win to sweep Drew.

After Drew scored twice in the fourth to take a 5-4 lead, both teams’ offenses went silent for the next three innings before Alexander reached on a hard-hit infield single with one out in the seventh. After a fly out, Sobieski stepped up and drilled a one-out single off the left-center field fence, with Alexander never stopping and scoring easily to tie the game. After Sobieski took second on a passed ball, first-year Kendall Cardone, a South Williamsport graduate, came on to pinch-run. Rodarmel singled through the left side with a hard-hit shot that forced Cardone to stop at third, but Forrest delivered a 2-1 liner into center field to seal the walk-off win.

Junior Kendall McAnelly, a Williamsport graduate, (2-2) earned the win with a complete game, allowing 11 hits, two walks and five runs. She struck out three. After Drew took the lead with two runs in the fourth, McAnelly retired the last 10 of the last 11 batters she faced, allowing just a seventh-inning walk.

Drew opened the game with two runs, but Lycoming responded with four in the bottom of the inning. Alexander led off the game with a triple, scoring on a one-out double by Sobieski. Forrest added a RBI single, another run came in on a groundout from sophomore Jocelyn McCracken, a Jersey Shore graduate, and McAnelly drove in the fourth run with a single through the left side.

A single Drew run in the third helped it edge closer before the two fourth-inning runs set up the Warrior comeback.

Alexander was 2 for 4 with two runs and a triple, Sobieski was 2 for 4 with a run, a double and two RBI, Rodarmel was 2 for 4 with a  double and a run, Forrest was 2 for 4 with a run and two RBI and McAnelly was 2 for 3 with a RBI.

Lorelei Lorentzen led the Rangers, going 3 for 3 with two runs, three RBI, a double and a triple.

Kaitlynne Streets (1-4) drew the loss, allowing seven hits and one earned run in six innings. She struck out three.

The Warriors get back on the field on Tuesday when they head to Susquehanna University for a 3 p.m., Landmark Conference doubleheader.
