PCT women’s tennis reaches first conference championship
For the first time in the program’s NCAA-era, Penn College’s women’s tennis team will be featured in a conference championship match as the third-seeded Wildcats upset No. 2 seed Penn State Harrisburg, 4-0, on Tuesday and advances to Sunday’s United East Conference Championship. Penn College improved to 9-10 on the season, while Harrisburg is finished at 9-8 overall.
The No. 3 Wildcats claimed three singles matches and two doubles matches for their team points to sweep the defending conference champions.
Singles winners were Faith Murray at No. 3, 6-2, 6-3; Leah Vest at No. 4, 6-1, 6-4; and Cici Miller at No. 6, 6-0, 6-3. Penn College players led or were even in other singles matches when play was halted. Winning in doubles for the Wildcats were Murray-Lauren Peck at No. 1, 6-2, and Vest-Kiera Wene at No. 2, 6-0.
Also on Tuesday, St. Mary’s (10-0, 13-4) bested No. 5 Lancaster Bible College, 4-0. When Penn College met St. Mary’s during the regular season, St. Mary’s won, 6-1.
Penn College will face No. 1 St. Mary’s (Md.) College at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday at the Hempfield recCenter in Landisville, Pa., with the championship on the line.
