PSU’s Rocco Becht to get 7-on-7 work

STATE COLLEGE – Matt Campbell is gearing up for his first Blue-White Game “without a couple quarterbacks” due to injury.

Campbell said Tuesday, however, that projected starter Rocco Becht — who is recovering from December surgery to his left (non-throwing) shoulder — will see action in 7-on-7 passing situations.

“I want him to throw the football in the stadium with obviously with our fans and everybody else out there,” Campbell said. “I think it’s really important that he’s made really great strides to being back.”

The game is being billed as a practice and begins at 1 p.m. Saturday at Beaver Stadium and, unlike most previous years, the game will not be televised. Like Becht, potential No. 2 quarterback Alex Manski is an Iowa State transfer who came with Campbell.

Manski, though, has missed most of spring practice due to a medical procedure, and he only recently returned from Iowa to Penn State.

“Alex is back on campus, which is huge,” Campbell said. “It’s trending towards where we would want him to be by the time we get to the summer so he can progress his way back.”

Manski played in three games for Iowa State behind Becht as a freshman last year.

Campbell said Connor Barry has taken the majority of the first-team snaps this spring and has “really made great strides.”

Barry was a record-setting QB at Division III Christopher Newport last year after transferring from Appalachian State in 2023.

“Connor kind of came out of nowhere for us,” Campbell said, adding “he’s played college football and has been in the (QB) room.”

Asked to assess his QB depth overall, Campbell said: “It’s been interesting to say the least. By the time we get to fall camp, we should be a lot better quarterback room than maybe what we were throughout the spring.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
