Williamsport’s Morrow breaks school record in high jump in dual vs. Selinsgrove
SELINSGROVE — Isabelle Morrow qualified for states last year in the high jump and has shown that she’s one of the area’s top high jumpers. She further cemented that by clearing 5 feet, 7 inches on Tuesday against Selinsgrove on the road, to break the Williamsport school record in the event.
Williamsport won a tiebreaker in boys track and field to win an exciting dual matchup over Selinsgrove, 75-75, and the Millionaire girls won, 96.33-53.67, as Williamsport swept the Seals on Tuesday.
Morrow was the only athlete in the girls high jump to clear 5-7. Aletha Fletcher of Williamsport, a freshman, was second with a height of 4-6.
Morrow didn’t only excel in the high jump, she also claimed two other individual victories and was Williamsport’s only three-event winner, boys or girls.
Morrow would win the long jump with a leap of 16-11 1/4, beating out Mikayla Martin of Selinsgrove, who took second with a leap of 15-9. In the triple jump, Morrow cleared 34-7 1/2 for a victory, winning by six inches over Martin.
In addition to Morrow, Williamsport had a trio of athletes claim two individual wins each in Aubrey Phillips-Cobb, Geiani Whaley and Madeline Sanders.
Phillips-Cobb had a solid performance overall. Phillips-Cobb won the 100 hurdles event in 15.44, winning by just over a second against Mikayla Martin of Selinsgrove. In the 300 hurdles, Phillips-Cobb ran a time of 46.28 to win by more than four seconds over teammate Saniyah Bailey (50.65).
Whaley, a Millionaire junior, won the 200 with a time of 27.16, winning by nearly half a second against Selinsgrove’s Gigi Veach. Desiree Ware of Williamsport took third (27.78). In the 400, Whaley ran a time of 1:00.36 to win, beating out Veach of Selinsgrove who took second in 1:00.90.
Madeline Sanders won the 1,600 in 5:19.96 and Williamsport’s Loisa Hofstrom, a freshman, was second in 5:25.18. In the 3,200, Sanders won in 12:18.95, winning by nearly 40 seconds as Clara Wade of Williamsport took second in 12:57.70 and Faith Hale took third in 13:17.76.
Williamsport junior Isabelle Sanders ran a 2:16.54 to win the 800 and teammate Mila Veldhuis took third in 2:32.43.
Williamsport senior Dayanna Baines had a throw of 104-11 to win the javelin as she was the only thrower to break 100 feet.
On the boys side, Williamsport’s Tevin Williams continued his outstanding sophomore year by claiming three individual wins against Selinsgrove. Williams won in the 400 in 49.94, winning by three seconds over Woods. He also claimed a high jump victory by clearing 5-10.
Williams cleared 22-7 1/2 to win the long jump, winning by nearly two feet.
Alex Takach of Williamsport, a junior, was a two-event winner. The Millionaire ran a time of 11.29 to win the 100 and in the 200, won with a time of 22.91, beating out teammate Nathaniel Woods by just 0.02 seconds in a great race down to the wire.
Williamsport senior Kye Diakite won the 110 hurdles event with a tiem of 15.55, winning by more than half a second over Selinsgrove’s Matthew Stebila.
Noah Baird of Williamsport ran a time of 10:30.12 to claim a victory in the 3,200 over Michael Andretta of Selinsgrove by eight seconds. Teammate Lauger Waldman took third in 10:51.93.
