Williamsport’s Phillips-Cobb one of four area athletes to break meet records at LHU High School Classic in girls competition

TIM WEIGHT/Special to the Sun-Gazette Williamsport's Aubrey Phillips-Cobb crosses the finish line in the 100 hurdles on Friday at the Lock Haven High School Classic. Phillips-Cobb set the meet record in the event.

LOCK HAVEN — It was shortly after Williamsport’s Aubrey Phillips-Cobb crossed the finish line at the Lock Haven High School Classic on Friday that she heard on the PA at Hubert Jack Stadium that she broke the meet record in the 100 hurdles.

“I was like ‘oh OK, that’s fun,” Phillips-Cobb said with a smile.

Fun indeed, and a nice accomplishment no doubt for the Millionaire hurdler.

Phillips-Cobb didn’t PR in the event, but her time of 14.98 — the only runner to go sub-15 — was nice enough to get her a victory amidst talented competition.

“I’m really happy about it I didn’t know what (to expect) at first going into it,” Phillips-Cobb said. “Not a PR. Initially I had a little bit of a hope for today, but I can’t complain, I’m just happy I could go out there and execute.”

TIM WEIGHT/Special to the Sun-Gazette Hughesville's Kylie Temple crosses the finish line in the girls 400 relay on Friday at the Lock Haven High School Classic. Temple broke the meet record in the 300 hurdles.

The Millionaire did exactly that, starting the race off well and never letting up until the end. She out-ran Hannah Owulade of Altoona, who took second in 15.45, and State College’s Ella Raish, who took third in 16.27. None of the competitors in the lanes next to her could catch Phillips-Cobb once she got into her rhythm.

“I definitely felt them, I felt their presence and they were definitely pushing me,” Phillips-Cobb said. They ran nice as well and I’m just happy I was able to run against them to get that nice of a push to be able to go out there and really compete.”

Phillips-Cobb was one of a number of area athletes to not only claim a victory on Friday afternoon, but break a meet record as well. Williamsport finished fourth in the team race. State College won with 170 points, Altoona took second with 151, Hughesville finished third with 72.75 and Williamsport finished with 69.

Hughesville’s Kylie Temple set the meet record in the 300 hurdles, Wellsboro’s Piper Hoprich broke the meet record in the 200, Lewisburg’s Lydia Delsite broke the meet record in the triple jump and in the 1,600 relay, Hughesville was among four teams that broke the meet record as well as Temple was part of that team.

It was a banner day for area athletes at Lock Haven.

TIM WEIGHT/Special to the Sun-Gazette Lewisburg's Baylee Espinosa runs the 3,200 relay on Friday at the Lock Haven High School Classic. Espinosa won the 800 on Friday.

Temple was also part of Hughesville’s 3,200 relay team which opened the day. That relay team with Laura Ochs, Sophie Poust and Regan Sellers ran a time of 9:49.97, good enough for third behind Altoona (9:36.79) and Lewisburg (9:40.52).

“For me it’s such a different even than what I’m normally used to. I run 100s to 400s, never really ran an 800 until indoor, so being put on this team and just like for the fun of it at first and just trying it out and being like ‘oh, OK I can kind of do this’ and I keep improving the few chances I get to run it,” Temple said. “To do it with these girls, it was such a fun race and it was so competitive from everyone. It’s so different from a lot of my races, but I’m glad I got to start competing it my senior year.”

In the 300 hurdles, Temple ran outstanding and never was in doubt of winning. She finished in 43.66, winning by three seconds over State College’s Lauren Craft.

In the 1,600 relay, Katelyn Temple, Sierra DeWire, Emelia Wolfe and Kylie Temple ran a time of 3:57.30 and were wth Altoona the entire race, but Altoona finisihed in 3:56.03, narrowly beating out the Spartans as Kylie Temple had a solid final leg to gain ground and surpass State College in the final 50 meters. State College finished in 3:57.37 and Punxsutawney was fourth in 3:58.76 as all four set meet records in the process.

For Deliste, Lock Haven has become a lucky home away from home for her. At last week’s Bald Eagle Invitational, the Lewisburg jumper broke the meet record in the triple jump. On Friday, at the Lock Haven High School Classic, Delsite broke the meet record once again as she jumped 38 feet, 1 1/4 inches.

TIM WEIGHT/Special to the Sun-Gazette Wellsboro's Piper Hoprich receives a medal after winning the 100 on Friday at the Lock Haven High School Classic. Hoprich won the 100 and 200 and set the meet record in the 200.

“It’s great. I’m really happy about it because I was here last week and I also beat the meet record. So it’s nice to be able to do it again,” Deliste said. “I’m just happy because I was going off a longer board today, something to try out because I’ve been very consistent on my other boards. I’m just happy I got a big mark in. It’s great because that’s my first 38 this season, and I’m really hoping to improve off that. It’s really great.”

Deliste’s leap edged out Jill Long of Altoona, who had a distance of 37-11 3/4. Deliste was the only District 4 athlete to break the 35-6 mark. Isabelle Morrow of Williamsport had a mark of 35-5 1/4, which was good enough for fifth. Delsite also was seventh in the long jump (16-5 1/4).

Deliste is hoping to get closer to the 38 mark consistently.

“My big goal this year is like 39-40s, which hopefully will happen soon, but it’s still halfway through the season, so there’s a lot more to come,” Delsite said. “It’s amazing (to break records in consecutive weeks). I’m just so happy that I get to be here. To be able to beat the meet records, I know they’ve been going on forever, is just insane for me. It’s just great.”

For Delsite, having talented athletes like Long, Altoona’s Hannah Owulade, State College’s Saige Cunningham and Williamsport’s Isabelle Morrow competing alongside her helped push her to hit her meet-breaking mark.

TIM WEIGHT/Special to the Sun-Gazette Lewisburg's Lydia Delsite clears the bar on the high jump on Friday at the Lock Haven High School Classic.

“I think it really helped this week especially because I know there’s way better competition with State College and Altoona. There is great competition overall,” Delsite said. “Even Jill Long, she jumped pretty close to me today, so I have good competition and it builds me better as an athlete and helps me improve on my marks every time.”

For Morrow, she ended up taking home three top-5 finishes on Friday. In the high jump, Morrow took second with a height of 5-4 as State College’s Josie Younkin won with her height of 5-4, winning on criteria via misses. Morrow was fourth in the long jump (17-0) and fifth in the triple jump (35-5 1/4). Morrow’s height of 5-4 comes just days after she broke the school record in the high jump with a height of 5-7.

Morrow competed in three events as she took fourth in the long jump (17-0) and fifth in the triple jump (35-5 1/4).

“I’m still happy with how I did. I did a lot of jumping but I’m really happy for Josie (Younkin) for her to get first and see her do really well,” Morrow said.

In the high jump, Delsite finished fourth with a height of 5-2, Central Mountain’s Sofia Kelly cleared 5-0 for fifth, Hughesville’s Casey Schultz tied for seventh with a height of 4-10, as did Jersey Shore’s Vivian Hale.

TIM WEIGHT/Special to the Sun-Gazette Lewisburg's Lydia Delsite competes in the triple jump on Friday at the Lock Haven High School Classic. Delsite broke the meet record in the event.

Hoprich was a two-event winner. She ran a 25.09 for the meet record in the 200 and also won the 100 with a time of 2.24. She won the 100 by 0.44 seconds over State College’s Kamille Peachey and won the 200 by 0.27 seconds over State College’s Sarah Kocher.

“With the 100 you can’t even think you just go. I had a pretty solid start and my top-end speed carried me through the race,” Hoprich said. “The competition definitely helps and the weather’s super nice right now too. The girls were fast today, so that definitely helps (push me).”

In the 200, Williamsport’s Geiani Whaley took fourth in 26.39 and Williamsport’s Desiree Ware was a seventh-place finisher in 26.94.

Williamsport’s Madeline Sanders was a top-3 finisher in two events. She ran a time of 5:05.10 in the 1,600 and won the 3,200 with a time of 11:01.83.

“I feel like during the mile I was a little off. I got in my own head a little bit, so I tried to give myself a little more warmup for the 3,200 which helped a lot,” Sanders noted. “I was able to process what I was able to do. I had a plan for the race so I was ready to execute it and I was excited to run it. I knew the other girls who were in it, so that was nice too.”

In the 1,600, Sanders was behind two runners who broke the five-minute mark in Lauren Kosek of Wellsboro (4:59.47) and Ashlyn Noce of Altoona (4;59.80) who had a tight finish down to the wire.

In the 3,200, Sanders was able to hold off Noce down the stretch. Noce kept pace with Sanders throughout the entire two miles, and Sanders could feel her presence throughout the race.

“I definitely could tell she was behind me for the whole race,” Sanders said. “She’s a great athlete and I was very glad to be able to race her today, but I could tell she was pretty close.”

While Sanders wasn’t necessarily thrilled with her time in the 1,600, she is still glad to have had success on Friday.

“I wasn’t super happy with the 1,600, it wasn’t really what I wanted, but I was pleased with the 3,200,” Sanders said. “The time wasn’t my best, but it was definitely good to win today.”

In the 3,200 with Sanders, Hughesville’s Wolfe took fourth in 11:38.67, Lewisburg’s Theo Wilkinson was fifth in 11:47.15 and Hughesville’s Laura Ochs finished seventh with a time of 11:53.38.

Hughesville’s Katelyn Temple was a first-place finisher in the 400 as she ran a time of 57.54, beating out State College’s Sarah Kocher (58.25) and Bellefonte’s Althea Helms (59.33). Geiana Whaley of Williamsport was fourth in 59.65, Williamson’s Madalynn Bailey was seventh (1:00.39) and Jersey Shore’s Aaralynn Kimble took eighth (1:00.79).

Lewisburg senior Baylee Espinosa won the 800 in 2:14.86, winning an extremely close race against Hughesville’s Grace Fortin, who took second in 2:14.94 as the Green Dragon beat the Spartan by just 0.08 seconds. Not only was it a win for Espinosa, but it was a nice birthday present as well as she celebrated her 18th birthday on Friday at Lock Haven’s High School Classic.

“It happens to be my birthday, which is really cool, but I think it’s been great to have that perspective that I’m grateful to be able to do this with so many cool people and meet so many cool people. That’s what I think it meant to do all of that on this day,” Espinosa noted.

Espinosa was part of two Lewisburg relay teams on Friday as well. She ran in the 1,600 relay as the third leg and was the anchor for the 3,200 relay team.

In the 800, Espinosa was happy to have a runner like Fortin right there with her the entire race to push her and give her someone to chase down and hold off late.

“I mean, I think chasing is always fun and something that personifies chasing your goals instead of leading and running from that fear of failure breathing down your neck,” Espinosa said. “Grace and I were able to manage our positions really well and got the best out of ourselves. That just helped me feel like almost like navigating all of that, just ‘OK see if I can get this person, see if I can get that person.’ Just personifying my goals and efforts. How hard I can get to get to this person.”

Loisa Hofstrom took fourth in the 800 in 2:16.72 and Warrior Run’s Natalie Hall was an eighth-place finisher in 2:22.13.

Montoursville’s Allie Eberhart took fourth in the pole vault with a height of 9-6, just missing the podium as Victoria Schellenberg of Bellefonte was third (10-0). Warrior Run’s Olesia Cieslukowski took fifth wtih a heigiht of 9-6 and Lewisburg’s Annika Shields was sixth with a height of 9-0. Warrior Run’s Alexis Shutt took eighth (9-0).

In the shot put, Lewisburg’s Ziva Williams claimed a sixth-place finish (34-2 1/4) and Lewisburg’s Gwynn Rowe was eighth with a throw of 33-3. Williams also placed fourth in the discus (114-6). Warrior Run’s Annabelle Pierce was fifth in the discus with a throw of 11-6, Jersey Shore’s Allison Bilbay took sixth with a throw of 103-2 and Rowe was seventh with a mark of 102-2.

Montgomery’s Alexis McKeta took seventh in the javelin with a throw of 106-3.
