Williamsport’s Williams breaks school record in long jump at LHU High School Classic

TIM WEIGHT/Special to the Sun-Gazette Williamsport runners exchange the baton during the 3,200 relay at the Lock Haven High School Classic on Friday.

LOCK HAVEN — After running the 400 early in the day at the Lock Haven High School Classic, Williamsport’s Tevin Williams figured he would simply have a good rest of the afternoon. The Millionaire won the event with a time of 49.37, winning by just 0.04 seconds over Warrior Run’s Ori Kennel.

But he wasn’t sure what would the rest of the day would have in store for him.

Little did he know a good day would turn into an unbelievable one on Friday.

Not only did Williams claim two more individual wins, but he broke the meet record in the long jump. Oh, and it turned out he also broke the school record as well.

From good to outstanding wtihin a few hours.

“I thought I just jumped a normal jump, and then they read it and I was like ‘wait that’s our school record!’ and I started running around,” Williams said with a laugh about the school record in the long jump. “I was really happy.”

Williams recorded a jump of 23 feet, 10 3/4 inches, which beat Shikellamy standout Thomas Pollock, who jumped 23-5 1/4.

“Started off the 400 was my first event. Was feeling good going into it, didn’t really run the time that I wanted to, but it was still the second best-time I ever ran in my career, so I thought I was going to have a good day,” Williams said. “I knew I had a lot of good competition for the long jump and I’d have to perform my best to be able to place at the Lock Haven Invitational.”

And the best is exactly what he did to claim the win. Williams was one of a number of Williamsport boys to claim top-8 finishes on Saturday at the Lock Haven High School Classic.

Standout sprinter Alex Takach took home a first-place finish in the 200 with a time of 22.15, beating out State College’s Jayden Byrd by just 0.06 seconds as Takach had an outstanding finshing to chase down Byrd and pass him late to win. Takach also took second in the 100 in 11.11 behind only Montoursivlle standout Bryce Winslow’s 11.09 in a solid race down the stretch.

Williamsport’s Connor Hofstrom won the 800 in 1:57.82, winning by just over two seconds over State College’s Eamon Drohan and Noah Baird took third in 1:59.99. Williamsport’s Brysen Thornton was a sixth-place finisher in the 1,600 in 4:37.20 and Cooper Allmaras claimed a sixth-place finish in the pole vault.

For Williams, he didn’t envision getting the school record on Saturday in the long jump, but nonetheless is excited to own it.

“I didn’t think I was going to get it this early during my career, so doing it this early, I don’t want to say my head’s really high, but I’m very proud of the moment and I feel like I can be so much better than what I am right now,” Williams said.

Hofstrom knew the competition in the 800 would be tough, but knew he could run a solid time to get a victory.

“It felt good. I was thinking about it during school today and wanted to come out and win for sure,” Hofstrom said. “It’s really good (competition). Once they started picking it up, I went with them and kicked hard at the end and got the win.”

He was also happy to see Baird take a third-place finish in the event in a lane near him to run with his teammate.

“It’s great,” Hofstrom noted. “I love running with my teammates. It’s fun when they’re close with you.”

The 100 leaves little room for error. You don’t have time to try and adjust and catch someone late in the race. For Bryce Winslow, he knew that going into Saturday’s competition with Takach, State College’s Jayden Byrd and State College’s Landon Bassett all competing. Add in Spencer Stine of Hughesville, Danny Dowell of Loyalscok and Carter Gormont of Hughesville, and it was a tough race.

“I think I got off to my best start ever basically, I knew I had some good competition today, but I was able to get it done,” Winslow said.

Winslow and Takach had a great finish in the race by just 0.02 seconds separating them. Byrd took third in 11.12 while Bassett took fourth in 11.23. Stine ran an 11.23 for fifth and Dowell took seventh in 11.29.

Having Takach close to him in the race pushed Winslow to run his best.

“He pushes me a ton. I know he’s a great top-end runner and he’s insanely quick in the 100, 200 so I knew it was going to be a battle today,” Winslow said. “I saw him coming up on me near the end, but I was able to hold him off at the end.”

Having someone of Takach’s caliber as well is only beneficial for Winslow he noted. Iron sharpens iron, and competing with the best helps make you better.

“I love it,” Winslow said of competing at the invitational. “I’d much rather compete at a meet where there’s ten kids better than me than when I’m the best. IT pushes me and helps me PR, it’s so fun.”

In the 110 hurdles, the area saw three top-4 finishers. Shikellamy’s Maddox Hoover won in 15.82 followed by Gavin Cromley of Warrior Run in second (15.86), Brendan Wolfgang of Hughesville (15.87) and Kaviko Faulkner of Hughesville in fourth (16.09). Faulkner would claim an individual win later in the 300 hurdles when he ran a time of 39.95, beating Bellefonte’s Landyn Langille by two seconds.

The 110 hurdles, however, saw the top 3 finishers all within 0.05 seconds of one another in a photo finish.

“I don’t know if I’ve ver been close like that before,” Wolfgang said. “I was trying to beat Maddox, I was close.”

That competition only pushed Wolfgang as well.

“Running against faster kids pushes me. I want to try to chase them and catch them,” Wolfgang said.

As a team, Williamsport finished third in the standings with 90 points, behind only State College (144.5) and Shikellamy (114). Hughesville finished fifth (42), Warrior Run was sixth (41) and Montoursville tied for ninth with 31.

The area saw success throughout the boys competition as well in numerous events with top-8 finishes.

Warrior Run’s Max Fogelman, Braego Cieslukowski, Gideon Kennel and Ori Kennel set the meet record in the 1,600 relay to close out the meet with a time of 3:22.21, winning over Altoona by two seconds. Montoursville’s Adam Shearer, Quinn Winslow, James Williams and Bryce WInslow were third in 3:24.95.

Central Mountain took seventh in the 1,600 relay.

Lewisburg’s Grayson Barner, Hugh Shields, Jack Johnson and Justin Nolt were second-place finishers in the 3,200 relay with a time of 7:59.62. That foursome trailed only State College’s winning team with a time of 7:54.64.

“Definitely a big step, like (sub) 8 is huge, I think we still have more to go but definitely a big accomplishment for us,” Johnson said.

“I’m proud of what we did today. Personally I think I have a little bit more to give, and every one of these guys has a little bit more,” Barner added. “I’m really proud of Hugh Shields for that 1:57 (split). We’re going to keep working and keep getting better and work on that time.”

Williamsport’s relay team of Baird, Austin Furey, Lauger Waldman and Hofstrom ran an 8:17.75, pushing Lewisburg throughout the relay.

“It definitely helps us run a better time,” Shields said.

“It’s great to have people (push you). We were looking at times on the heat sheets ont he way up here, but we’re here to run our race and we did the best we could with situation we had,” Nolt added.

In the 1,600, Nolt finished in fourth and was the area’s highest finisher in that event. Brysen Thornton of Williamsport took sixth (4:37.20) and Shields took seventh (4:38.87).

Loyalsock standout Jeremiah Johnson was a second-place finisher in the shot put with a throw of 53-3. He was behind only State College’s CJ Clemons, who threw 57-2 1/4 to set a meet record. Warrior Run’s Aiden Hoffman finished fifth in the 3,200 with a time of 9:42.00. while Henry Whitney of Wellsboro was seventh in 9:52.66 and Thornton took eighth for Williamsport in 9:54.53.

In the long jump, Brayden Burkett of Montoursville jumped 20-5 to take seventh while Jemama of Lewisburg was eighth (20-2 1/4).

Hughesville’s Gormont, Sam Haddon, Spencer Stine and James Smith ran a time of 44.06 for fourth, just 0.01 seconds behind Altoona’s third-place team. Loyalsock’s Ethan Wetzler, Anton Cochran, Ivan Baker and Dowell ran a 44.32 for fifth and Williamsport finished sixth. Lewisburg was seventh and Central Mountain claimed an eighth-place finish.
