CHRIS MANNING/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Lewisburg's Baylee Espinosa leads the field in the girls Class AA 1,600 race at Shippensburg for the PIAA track and field championships. Espinosa won state gold, her second consecutive title in the 1,600.
SHIPPENSBURG — Once again, Baylee Espinosa is the state’s best distance runner. A year after she won state gold in both the 1,600 and 3,200 in Class AA competition, the senior Green Dragon won state gold in the 1,600 on Friday on the first day of competition at the PIAA track and field championships in Shippensburg.
Espinosa won a time of 4:53.81, beating Shady Side Academy’s Charlotte Barker by three seconds as Barker finished in 4:56.83.
Espinosa bested her time from districts by two seconds. Espinosa will compete on Saturday morning in the 3,200 and will look to claim her fourth career gold medal.
If the Green Dragon distance runner claims another state title on Saturday, she would become just the fourth Lewisburg athlete of all-time with four or more gold medals. She would join Jill Snyder (1993-96, four), Chris Spooner (2002-05, six) and Kalyn Fisher (2007-10, six) in Lewisburg history with four or more golds at states.
Only Snyder claimed all her golds in individual events as both Spooner and Fisher won three golds each in relay competition.
