Lewisburg’s Espinosa wins district gold in 3,200 to qualify for states once more

MILTON — Lewisburg senior Baylee Espinosa is heading to states once again. The Green Dragon senior — who claimed two state titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 last spring — is heading back to states in the 3,200.

On Thursday on the first day of competition at the District 4 Class AA track and field championships, Espinosa ran a time of 10:39.06 to win District 4 gold and set the district record in the process. She held off Wellsboro’s Lauren Kosek, who finished in second in 10:43.00 in a close finish in the two-mile.

Espinosa broke the record set in 2018 by Loyalsock’s Isabel Sagar (10:50.91). Lewisburg’s Theo Wilkinson took third in 11:26.03 and Lewisburg’s Maya Sak was a fifth-place finisher in 11:41.96. Taking sixth was Hughesville’s Emelia Wolfe (11:44.86).

Espinosa wasn’t the only record breaker in the area in Class AA, however. Canton senior Alexis McRoberts won the discus with a district-record throw of 140 feet, 1 inch, winning the event by 12 feet over Lewisburg’s Ziva Williams (128-4) as both are heading to Shippensburg. Mcroberts throw beat a record which stood since 2005 when Lewisburg’s Becky Rautzhan threw 131-7.

Lewisburg’s Lydia Delsite won the long jump by leaping 17-9 3/4, winning by almost a foot over Williamson’s Madalynn Bailey (16-10 3/4). Milton’s Jayanah Jones took fifth (16-2) and Milton’s Elizabeth Schrock was sixth 916-1 3/4). Kristina Belz of Wellsboro finished seventh 916-1).

Loyalsock standout Jeremiah Johnson came just shy of district gold in the shot put. The Lancer threw 53-0 1/2 to take second place and silver, ensuring a trip to states. He was behind only Danville’s Troy Raup, who threw 54-2 1/2.

In the boys Class AA 3,200 race, Canton’s Lawrence Halbfoerster won with a time of 9:23.98, winning by just three seconds over Michael Fritz of Northwest (9;26.17).

In the 3,200 relay, Hughesville’s team of Wolfe, Katelyn Temple, Grace Fortin and Kylie Temple ran a time of 9:14.64, winning the relay by an impressive 27 seconds, and set a district record in the process. The Spartans’ relay team broke the mark Warrior Run set a year prior of 9:21.47.

Lewisburg’s team of Annika Shields, Claire Driver, Katherine Batkowski and Espinosa took silver in 9:41.61. Warrior Run was third (9:43.62) and Williamson finished fourth (9:47.37).

Lewisburg’s boys 3,200 relay team of Justin Nolt, Jack Johnson, Hugh Shields and Grayson Barner ran a time of 7:53.37 to win district gold. Hughesville’s Tristan Kurzawa, Carter Sherwood, Patrick Stine and Tyce Shaner took silver in 7:56.28 in a tight race. Warrior Run took third in 8:01.16 and North Penn-Mansfield finished fourth in 8:07.97.

Lewisburg’s Rebira Jemama ttook third in the Class AA long jump with a distance of 21-0 as Landen Murray of Mifflinburg won gold (21-7) and Jude Lazicki of Mount Carmel took silver (21-3 3/4).

North Penn-Mansfield’s Deakon Valentine took third in the javelin with a throw of 166-0, behind only Southern Columbia’s Ethan Reed (205-7) and Danville’s Collin Geise (171-0). South Williamsport’s Jack Fortin took seventh (154-9).
