Updates throughout Saturday in Shippensburg for area athletes at the PIAA track and field championships in Class AA and Class AAA.
CHAMPION WATCH
The following area athletes and/or relay teams won state titles on Saturday:
--Lewisburg’s Baylee Espinosa won state gold in the girls Class AA 3,200
--Wellsboro’s Piper Hoprich won state gold in the girls Class AA 100 and 200
-Hughesville’s girls 3,200 relay team won Class AA gold
-Hughesville’s boys 3,200 relay team won Class AA gold
--Hughesville’s girls 400 relay team won Class AA gold
GIRLS CLASS AA 3,200
Lewisburg senior Baylee Espinosa capped her career with two more state titles. A day after winning the 1,600, Espinosa went 2 for 2 in distance events as she ran a 10:33.05 to win gold in the girls Class AA 3,200 event. Lauren Kosek of Wellsboro took second in 10:35.87. Espinosa becomes the second Green Dragon track and field athlete to ever win four career individual gold medals at the state track and field championships.
“She did an amazing job,” Espinosa said of running with Kosek. “I think when she was running I was thinking 'Wow, she's having a great race.' She pushed me along and when I felt I wasn’t feeling my best, it definitely helped me to be able to still stay with it and try to get the most out of myself. That's obviously a big goal, but getting those points for the team means a lot.”
GIRLS CLASS AAA 3,200
Williamsport’s Sanders sisters just missed reaching the podium in the Class AAA 3,200 event. Isabelle Sanders ran a time of 10:38.05 to take ninth and sister Madeline ran a 10:40.66. Madeline PR’d by about a second in the event. Isabelle placed sixth a day prior in the 1,600.
“I got a good start sticking with the pack for five or six (laps),” Isabelle said.
“It's amazing (running with Isabelle),” Madeline said. “It's nice to have someone you know that's rooting for you and you're rooting for them.”
BOYS CLASS AA 3,200
Canton's Lawrence Halbfoerster took 18th in the Class AA 3,200 boys race in 9:39.96. Quaker Valley's Jonah Montagnese won gold in 9:11.23 and Elk Lake’s Kendel Jones took silver in 9:17.54.
GIRLS CLASS AA 100
Wellsboro’s Piper Hoprich runs a time of 11.90 to win the state title in the Class AA 100. She beats out Catasauqua’s Hailey Jenkins by 0.03 seconds.
“I worked so hard for this,” Hoprich said. “It's not even processing yet right now. I don’t even know what to do with myself, but I’m so excited.”
Hoprich noted the competition of Jenkins and Deayja Cain of Neighborhood Academy pushed her.
“I love competition and Hailey was right behind me pushing me, and so was Daeyja. They both pushed me really good. I always love competition and that always makes me go faster.”
BOYS CLASS AA 100
Hughesville's Spencer Stine ran an 11.16 to finish eighth and reach the podium. Deakyn DeHoet of Bethelehm-Center wins gold in 10.51.
BOYS CLASS AA LONG JUMP
Williamsport’s Tevin Williams fought through rain and chilly conditions to take silver in the boys Class AAA triple jump competition. The Millionaire sophomore PR’d with a distance of 23 feet, 3 1/2 inches for the second-place finish. Tymir Phillips of Meadville won with the same distance.
“It means so much. All the hard work is paying off,” Williams said. “This basically being my first year of long jumping and trusting my coaches, being able to step on that podium? All props to them. It's been great.”
GIRLS CLASS AAA 3,200 RELAY
Hughesville's 3,200 relay team of Kylie Temple, Katelyn Temple, Grace Fortin and Emelia Wolfe won state gold with a time iof 9:23.39. The foursome beat out Cathedral Prep's relay team by roughly four seconds as they ran a 9:27.37.
GIRLS CLASS AAA 3,200 RELAY
Williamsport’s Isabelle Sanders, Madeline Sanders, Mila Veldhuis and Loisa Hofstrom finished the Class AAA 3,200 relay with a time of 9:25.26 to take home a seventh-place finish. The Millionaires’ relay team gained distance in the final two legs of the relay to surpass the eighth-place finishers.
GIRLS CLASS AA SHOT PUT
Canton’s Alexis McRoberts threw 40-10 3/4 to take second place in the Class AA shot put competition. She was behind only Laurel’s Alexis Geiweitz, who threw 41-6 1/4.
“It means so much. I’ve put so much time and effort and work into this,” McRoberts said. “To be able to come out here and get second is a great achievement for me.”
BOYS CLASS AA 3,200 RELAY
Talk about one super close finish. Hughesville’s Patrick Stine ran a solid final leg to give Hughesville a win in 8:00.38, just edging out Lake Lehman, who ran 8:00.46 in a race down to the wire. The Spartans’ gold-winning team consisted of Tyce Shaner, Carter Sherwood, Tristan Kurzawa and Stine.
Lewisburg's team of Grayson Barner, Jack Johnson, Justin Nolt and Hugh Ikeda Shields finished in third with a time of 8:03.08. The Green Dragons were in first on the third split before Lake Lehman and Hughesville took the lead.
"It means everything," Kurzawa said. "We've been talking about this day since freshman year and three of us are seniors, we're gone. So four years of manifestation for this and it all came through. It's awesome."
"I've been training really hard since winter with indoor track and I've been doing workouts with these guys to stick with them. I gave it my all," Stine added.
GIRLS CLASS AA POLE VAULT
Montoursville’s Allie Eberhart tied for eighth place in the Class AA pole vault competition by clearing 10 feet, 0 inches. She tied with Aimee Frantz of Schuylkill Valley.
GIRLS CLASS AA 400 RELAY
Hughesville’s girls 400 relay team wins state gold with team of Kylie Temple, Katelyn Temple, Sierra DeWire and Casey Schultz. Spartans run time of 48.95 to win by roughly half a second over Seneca. It’s the second girls relay gold medal for the Spartans on Saturday.
Wellsboro’s team of Piper Hoprich, Sophia Yoder, Luna Moyer and Paige Rush took fourth in 50.25.
GIRLS CLASS AA TRIPLE JUMP
Lewisburg senior Lydia Delsite, who will compete at Penn State, took sixth at the state meet with a distance of 37-1 1/2. It’s her first career state medal. Mid Valley’s Olivia Thomas won state gold by jumping 39-11 1/2.
“It's great. I've never gotten a medal at states, so I'm very happy about it,” Delsite said. “Taking sixth is very good, even with this crappy weather.”
GIRLS CLASS AA 400
Hughesville's Katelyn Temple finished the girls Class AA 400 race in 58.41 to take sixth as Winchester Thurston's DaShae Cochran won gold in 56.55. Warrior Run's Natalie Hall took seventh in 58.88.
“I mean, I’m always grateful I got the chance. I was seeded higher, but honestly I had trials yesterday and I knew coming in my legs would not do very well, so I just did the best I could.”
GIRLS CLASS AAA LONG JUMP
Williamsport’s Isabelle Morrow claims her first career outdoor state medal, doing so in the long jump in Class AAA competition. The Millionaire jumped 17-11 to take seventh place.
“I'm so happy. So happy,” Morrow said with a laugh.
BOYS CLASS AAA 400
Williamsport's Tevin Williams goes 2 for 2 today in podium trips as he takes bronze in the Class AAA 400 in 48.49. He trailed only James Mahoney of La Salle (47.74) and Anthony McClatchy of Father Judge (48.33).
“I'm really happy. It's great to be here and being able to medal against great competition,” Williams said.
GIRLS CLASS AA 300 HURDLES
Hughesville's Kylie Temple takes second in the girls Class AA 300 hurdles in 43.66, just 0.04 seconds behind Lily Paolini of Wyomissing Area. Temple was the defending state champion.
“I am still happy knowing that I put a lot of events on myself in two days,” Temple said. “I hoped this was my proudest accomplishment, and it definitely isn’t from this meet. I am proud coming out and still running an alright time. Not what I was looking for, but I cant change a thing now.”
BOYS CLASS AA 800
Hughesville's Tyce Shaner took home an eighth-place medal in the boys Class AA 800 event in 1:56.52. He was less than half a second from being in fifth place. Blake Glass of Fort LeBoeuf was first in 1:53.08 and Quaker Valley's Jonah Montagnese took silver in 1:55.16.
GIRLS CLASS AA 200
Wellsboro’s Piper Hoprich won another gold medal, this time in the 200. Hoprich ran a 24.39 while Deayja Cain, Neighborhood Academy, ran a 24.53 for second and Hailey Jenkins, Catasauqua, a 24.76 for third. She was one of two area athletes to win two gold medals at the track and field championships, joining Baylee Espinosa of Lewisburg (1,600 and 3,200).
“I honestly was just telling myself push, push, push,” Hoprich said. “I was not concerned with who was behind me. I was concerned with going forward and just pushing myself.”
GIRLS CLASS AA 1,600 RELAY
Hughesville narrowly missed sweeping the relay competition and ended with silver in 4:01.77 as Tyrone won in 4:01.36. Lewisburg finished in sixth in 4:06.32.
BOYS CLASS AA 1,600 RELAY
Warrior Run's Maxwell Fogleman, Braego Cieslukowski, Gideon Kennel and Ori Kennel claim Class AA 1,600 relay silver. Hughesville's Kaviko Faulkner, Spencer Stine, Sam Haddon and Carter Sherwood take eighth in 3:30.35.
