Local roundup: Abernatha makes memorable debut with two doubles in Hughesville’s win vs. Tunkhannock
Si Abernatha made his season debut a memorable one Saturday at Tunkhannock. Playing for the first time after recovering from an injury, Abernatha slammed two doubles, went 3 for 5 and helped Hughesville thump Tunkhannock, 8-2.
It was a good day for the Abernatha family with Jed going 2 for 2, belting a home run and double, while scoring twice. Wynter Fogleman went 3 for 4 and scored three times as Hughesville (7-6) won for the fifth time in six games. The Spartans collected 14 hits and scored in each of the first five innings. Winning pitcher Blake Babb did not allow an earned run in 4 2/3 innings and also went 2 for 4 with a run.Chip Fowler was 1 for 2 with two RBIs and Gage Webb and Landen Puderbach both had hits and RBIs.
Trey Damschroder allowed one run in five innings and Cole Deitrick went 3 for 4 as Williamsport defeated Altoona, 6-4, winning its 11th straight game. Damschroder improved to 5-0 and struck out four, while Deitrick doubled and drove in two runs. Lucas Naughton also doubled, had two hits and drove in two runs. Jaxson March added a hit, two walks and an RBI as Williamsport (13-1) took a 6-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh.
Logan Kirby threw 5 1/3 brilliant innings and every starter produced a hit, RBI and/or run as Montoursville pounded Waverly, New York, 13-1 and handed the New York power its first loss in 11 games this season. Kirby fanned five and has allowed one or no runs in all six starts this year. Gabe Moser closed with 1 2/3 hitless innings. Kirby also had three hits and a double. Brody Aldenderfer made a run at the cycle, going 3 for 4 with a triple, double, four runs and RBI. Austin Davidson, Elijah Eck and Jonah Heddings all had two hits with Heddings doubling and driving in three runs. Noah Kirby and Zack Neill combined for five RBIs and Montoursville built a 7-0 lead after 3 1/2 innings.
South Williamsport scored three runs in the top of the fifth inning, but that rally wuldn’t continue in the final two as Wellsboro held on for a close 4-3 win at home against the Mounties.
The Green Hornets scored two runs in both the first two innings for an early 4-0 lead. Maxwell Mascho threw all seven innings for Wellsboro and struck out 11 with one walk allowed.
Wellsboro’s Coen Tennis went 2 for 3 with an RBI, Marek Mascho was 2 for 3 with an RBI and run scored and Gabe Cuneo had a triple. South Williamsport was led by Cade Lusk’s 2 for 4 performance with two RBIs and Marc Molina, who collected a double.
• Ady Frantz struck out eight batters, issued one walk and didn’t allow a single hit as she pitched 2 2/3 innings of a four-inning rout for Wellsboro in an 18-0 victory vs. Coudersport.
Wellsboro scored nine runs in the third inning and six in the fourth to put the mercy rule into effect. Wellsboro collected seven hits in the win, all singles.
• The Mansfield softball team competed against East Stroudsburg, with both games won by the Warriors, 8-0 and 3-2.
The Warriors had seven unanswered runs until the sixth inning when Kaelyn Watson had the first hit for the Mountaineers to the left side in the first contest.
East Stroudsburg was able to pick up one more run before calling the game, 8-0.
The Mounties started the second game with the lead with a single from Sarah Shupp to center field allowing Shannon Perlungher to score.
• The Lock Haven women’s outdoor track and field team completed the third and final day of competition at the PSAC Outdoor Championships in Shippensburg.
Freshman Olivia Spotts, a Jersey Shore graduate, earned All-PSAC honors in the javelin. Spotts took third place with an NCAA provisional mark of 141 feet, 8 inches.
Maria Puglia also impressed in the event with a fifth-place finish. Puglia had a career-best mark of 135-6.
Nicole Caroll earned fifth place in the 800. Carroll finished the race in 2:17.98 and has found the podium in back-to-back seasons in the event.
Makayla Grace Weber took eighth place on the podium in the 400 hurdles. Weber finished in 1:05.38.
Clarissa Davis earned her way on the podium in the shot put. Davis reached a mark of 40-5 and finished in eighth place.
• The Lock Haven men’s outdoor track and field team completed the third and final day of competition at the PSAC Outdoor Championships in Shippensburg.
Montoursville graduate Josiah Schans set a new Lock Haven program record in the 110 hurdles as he took first place in the event. The junior finished with an impressive time of 14.07 and earned an NCAA provisional.
Anden Aitkins earned second place and all-conference honors in the 800m with a new personal-best time of 1:51.46. Aitkin’s time ranks second in school history in the event.
Jakob Rager and Hughesville graduate Morgan Gavitt both found the podium in the event as well. Rager took seventh with a 1:56.22 and Gavitt finished eighth with a time of 1:57.06.
Jersey Shore graduate Peter Bellomo earned All-PSAC honors and a silver medal in the javelin. Bellomo reached an NCAA provisional on his season-best throw of 205-9.
Schans also earned all-conference honors in the 400 hurdles. Schans took third with a time of 54.19.
