Local roundup: Hughesville baseball storms back from five-run fifth-inning deficit to win

Landen Puderbach roped a walk-off single and Hughesville stormed back from a five-run fifth-inning deficit, winning an 8-7, eight-inning thriller against Bloomsburg. The Spartans (8-6) rallied for their third win after trailing in the sixth inning or beyond this season and overcame a 5-0 deficit as well as a 7-3 seventh-inning hole. Hughesville then completed its massive comeback by scoring twice in the eighth after Bloomsburg had gone back ahead. Puderbach had a big day, going 3 for 5 with two RBIs and Wynter Foglemen was 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs. Kyler Solomon also had two hits and Dylan McConnell a hit, RBI and two runs. Gage Webb earned the win in relief and Jed Abernatha had two RBIs as Hughesville won for the sixth time in seven games.

Mason Bryson and Sam Springman combined on a four-hit shutout and Parker Bennett went 2 for 3 with a double as Montgomery blanked Bucktail, 15-0 in four innings. Bryson improved to 5-0 and also had a hit, two RBIs and two runs. The Red Raiders (13-3) scored all 15 runs in their final three at-bats and Parker Persing had a hit with three RBIs.

Cowanesque Valley erased an early two-run deficit and cruised to its 15th win as eight players collected hits in an 11-4 win against Sullivan County. Brody Bruce led the way, going 2 for 2 with two RBIs. The Indians (15-2) scored five first inning runs after falling behind 2-0. They scored multiple runs in four of six at-bats as well.

Danville dealt Montoursville’s HAC-II championship hopes a devastating blow, walking off with a shocking 3-2 win. Montoursville (12-3, 8-2) dropped a game behind Mount Carmel after Danville avenged a previous 15-0 defeat. Gabe Moser did not allow an earned run in 4 2/3 innings and Carson Menne doubled. Noah Kirby added an RBI single.

Clark Bower went 3 for 3 with two runs scored for St. John Neumann, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Golden Knights fell to CMVT in five innings, 15-3. CMVT put the game away with a 12-run fourth inning.

• South Williamsport continued both its late-season surge and its late-game heroics, winning its third game in its final at-bat; scoring five sixth inning runs and defeating visiting Western Wayne, 11-9. The Mounties won for the fourth time in five games and scored five runs with two outs and nobody on base to take an 11-8 lead in the sixth. South had five hits and a walk to produce the rally. Eight players combined for 15 hits, giving South 32 over its last two games. Mikaiya Hills was 3 for 4 with an RBI double and winning pitcher Annabelle Fry, Annika Harding, Emma McLaughlin, Jewelana Jasper and Abigail Holbrook all had two hits. Fry drove in three runs, Harding two and McLaughlin two, while Holbrook doubled.

Lyla Kinney continued her recent torrid hitting and walloped a walk-off, three-run home run, helping Hughesville clinch its third straight District 4 Class AAA playoff berth with an impressive 13-2, six inning win against playoff-bound Midd-West. Kinney went 2 for 3 with four RBIs and three runs. Maddie Smith was 3 for 4 with a triple and two runs and Addy Knight 2 for 3 with three runs, helping Hughesville (10-4) built a 6-0 third inning lead. Ashlynn Barlett belted a three-run triple and winning pitcher Addison Henninger threw a five-hitter, while going 1 for 2 with three RBIs.

Lexi Frey struck out eight in a complete game effort and Aubree Reichard belted two doubles as Jersey Shore defeated Troy, 5-4. Reichard scored four times and went 3 for 4, while Mya Lehman was 2 for 3 with an RBI double. Frey came up big in the seventh inning, closing the game after Troy had pulled within one. Sophia Wrench had a hit and RBI and Jersey Shore (11-4) finished with nine hits while winning for the fourth time in five games.

Arianna Snyder and Jenna Houseknecht combined on a three-inning no-hitter and Montgomery scored 16 runs over the final two innings in an 18-0 win at Sugar Valley. Snyder struck out five in two innings and Houseknecht two in the third. Madisyn Miller had a big day, going 3 for 3 with a triple, double, three RBIs and two runs. Zoe Furman smashed a home run, going 2 for 3 with four RBIs and three runs. Snyder, Madie Hamm and Addison Greger all had two hits, Snyder hitting a two-run double. Ava Hartman also hit a two-run double and Chloe Gordner was 1 for 2 with three RBIs as Montgomery improved to 12-4.

Makenzie Heffner had a strong game, going 2 for 3 with a run and Rylee Reeder had a hit with two RBIs. Four players homered for Danville.

Muncy collected 11 hits, including a double by Sadie Odell (2 for 3) and a triple by Avery Buss (2 for 3, three RBIs) but a seven-run seventh inning secured a 17-6 win by Lewisburg over Muncy in softball.

Herianne Pagan went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs for Lewisburg while Meg Mitchell went 2 for 5 with an RBI.
