MILTON — Fans at the District 4 championships heard the same thing quite often over the PA at Milton High School.

“And your district champion, from Williamsport…”

When you crown nine individual champions in girls competition and two relay champions — in addition to winning the team title — it’s going to happen. And the Millionaires are not only glad for that success at districts, but the Williamsport girls are now turning their attention collectively to Shippensburg and the state meet.

After not having a single athlete medal last year in Shippensburg, Williamsport is hoping for a nice medals haul this weekend. And there’s plenty of Millionaires that have a chance to do just that.

Williamsport has six individual qualifiers and two relay teams.

Aubrey Phillips-Cobb qualified in the 100 hurdles and 300 hurdles, Isabelle Sanders and Madeline Sanders each qualified in the 1,600 and 3,200, Isabelle Morrow won three district gold medals but is only competing in the high jump and long jumps. Aletha Fletcher is state-bound in the high jump and Dayanna Baines won gold in the javelin to head to Shippensburg.

Williamsport also has the girls 400 and 3,200 relay teams which qualified. The 400 relay team consists of Makayla Cerami, Aubrey Phillips-Cobb, Desiree Ware and Geiani Whaley. The 3,200 relay team is made up of Isabelle Sanders, Madeline Sanders, Loisa Hofstrom and Mila Veldhuis.

The girls 400 relay team is seeded 14th in the event while the 3,200 relay team is seeded third, and has a very good chance of medaling.

That 3,200 relay team’s time of 9:17.61 trails only JP McCaskey (9:17.30) and Central Bucks East (9:10.22) entering the state meet.

The girls 400 relay team will compete on Thursday afternoon while the 3,200 relay team competes on Saturday.

“I am ecstatic to be going back,” Phillips-Cobb said, who’s competing in two individual events and a relay. “I’m excited to go back and get that competition. It pushes me into hopefully another PR.”

Phillips-Cobb is a talented hurdler, that has been evident the entire season and even more so at the district championships. But regardless, Phillips-Cobb feels she’s improved from the beginning of the season to where she is currently.

“I definitely think I did (improve), especially mentally,” Phillips-Cobb said. “The physical factor of course, the more you practice the harder you work and more improvement you make. But I feel this year was to make sure I was mentally good with what I was doing and not too much pressure and still just have fun with the sport.”

In the 100 hurdles, Phillips-Cobb is in the fifth heat of the prelims with her time of 14.64. In the 300 hurdles, she’s in the second heat after running a 45.11.

She has the tenth-fasted time in the 100 hurdles and could make the podium with an outstanding run against the state’s best competition. She’s seeded 19th in the 300 hurdles.

Madeline Sanders is seeded ninth in the Class AAA 3,200 with her time of 10:43.01 while Isabelle is seeded 12th (10:47.03). Madeline is just four seconds behind Peters Township’s Adelaide Lulich, who has the eighth-best time. In the 1,600, Isabelle’s time of 4:55.90 has her seeded seventh while Madeline is seeded 16th in 4:58.25.

Both Sanders sisters have a chance to reach Shippensburg’s podium with good runs in the finals.

“I’m really excited. It’s not always frequently that we get to run against more good runners that are ahead of us out there,” Isabelle said. “It’s super exciting and I’m really excited. We’re definitely shooting for PRs.”

“It’s definitely going to be an amazing opportunity to run with people faster than us and really close around us,” Madeline added.

Morrow is competing in the high and triple jumps and has the sixth-best height (5-5) in the triple jump and 18th best distance in the triple jump. Fletcher’s height of 5-5 has her in the top-5 as well.

“I just want to PR,” Morrow noted. “The medal would be nice, but it doesn’t necessarily matter. I just want to PR and go out and perform the way that I can and perform well under pressure.”

Baines won district gold in the javelin with a throw of 120-4. She’s seeded 16th and is 10 feet behind Jada Lubin (130-10), who currently has the eighth-best throw.

Like numerous athletes, Phillips-Cobb is among many not putting too high of expectations on herself and too much pressure. She wants to have fun, possibly PR and maybe, just maybe, claim a medal.

“I don’t want to say any expectations, but just to go and compete and have fun,” Phillips-Cobb said. “I definitely feel like we have what it takes to leave with some medals this year. Just stay tuned.”

Williamsport fans will definitely be staying tuned.
