Williamsport’s Sanders sisters break district records; WAHS has 7 qualify for states

TIM WEIGHT/Special to the Sun-Gazette Williamsport's Madeline Sanders won District 4 gold in the 3,200 on Thursday by breaking the district record alongside her sister Isabelle as the duo are state-bound in the 3,200 this year.

Madeline and Isabelle Sanders are both talented distance runners for Williamsport and on Thursday, they both not only qualified for the state meet in the 3,200 in Class AAA, but set Distirct 4 records as well.

Madeline Sanders won District 4 gold in the 3,200 by running a time of 10:43.01 while sister Isabelle ran a 10:47.03 to finish second. While Madeline qualified for states automatically as a district champion, Isabelle qualified with her time as a state qualifying time.

Both times broke the previous District 4 record for the girls 3,200 which was set last year by Lewisburg’s Baylee Espinosa (10:59.78).

The Sanders’ sisters were part of another District 4-record breaking moment as they ran as part of the Millionaires’ 3,200 relay team which won district gold with a mark of 9:17.61. That team featured Loisa Hofstrom and Mila Veldhuis. The district time they broke was set in 2023 by Danville (9:33.91).

The Sanders sister success and relay team was just part of Williamsport’s overall success on Day 1 of the track and field championships.

In the high jump, Williamsport senior Isabelle Morrow secured her trip to states with a height of 5 feet, 5 inches to win district gold, beating out teammate Aletha Fletcher, who also reached 5-5. The Millionaire pair are both headed to states as Fletcher reached a state-qualifying standard. Jersey Shore’s Elizabeth Hollick finished with a bronze medal after clearing 5-1.

Morrow would go 2 for 2 on Thursday in winning district gold as she also claimed a tittle in the Class AAA triple jump competition. The Millionaire won with a leap of 35-5, winning by nearly a foot over Jane Berger of Shikellamy (34-5 3/4). Ayanna Barbee of Williamsport took third (34-3 1/2).

Dayanna Baines of Williamsport is also heading to Shippensburg after winning district gold in the girls javelin. The Millionaire had a throw of 120-4 to win the title, winning wtih a throw of just over eight feet against Shikellamy’s Olivia Bozeman, who took second (112-9). Williamsport’s Makayla Cerami was fifth in the event with a throw of 100-3.

Adding to the success for Williamsport was Tevin Williams, who won the high jump competition with a height of 6-5, beating Hunter Bordner of Shikellamy by two inches to win district gold. Jersey Shore’s Khani McCray was sixth (5-9) while Montoursville’s Cameron Cintron was seventh (5-9).

Fletcher had a fourth-place finish in the shot put competition with a throw of 33-6 1/2. She trailed only Selinsgrove’s Isabelle Furgison (45-9 1/2), Shikellamy’s Gariella Chambers (33-9 1/2) and Midd-West’s Leigha Wenger (33-7 1/2).

Williamsport’s Brysen Thornton was a third-place finisher in the boys Class AAA 3,200 in 9:56.01, trailing only Midd-West’s Grant Boop (9:43.12) and Athens’ Graham Wanck (9:45.01). Noah Baird of Williamsport took fourth in 10:).6.16 and Montoursville’s Cy Haight was fifth in 10:12.32. Taking sixth was Jersey Shore’s Samuel Davis (10:13.96) and Williamsport’s Connor Hofstrom was seventh (10:18.66).

Ashton Thomas of Williamsport finished fourth in the triple jump by hitting a distance of 43-6 1/4. Shikellamy’s Hunter Bordner won (46-0 3/4) and Selinsgrove’s Matthew Stebila (45-9) took second. Shikellamy’s Thomas Pollock jumped 45-3 3/4 as those top 3 finishers all reached state qualifying standards to head to the state meet. Jersey Shore’s Khani McCray was fifth with a leap of 41-1.

Williamsport’s Noah Baird, Austin Furey, Lauger Waldman and Connor Hofstrom took silver in the boys Class AAA 3,200 relay in 8:18.59, behind Midd-West’s team which won in 7:53.08.
