Halifax baseball beats South Williamsport in walk-off fashion
HALIFAX — South Williamsport saw its season come to a tough end in the first round of the PIAA Class AA playoffs as Halifax defeated the Mounties in walk-off fashion, 7-6, at Halifax.
Halifax trailed by a run in the bottom of the seventh inning hen Josh Zahurak reached base on a double, which tied the game and brought in the go-ahead winning run. Halifax got runners on base after Brayden Midile beat a ground ball to the infield, Eli Peryea reached after being hit by a pitch and Matt Kocher got on base thanks to an error to set up the game for Zahurak to win it.
South Williamsport would score in the top of the first inning thanks to a single by Torin Haug, but Halifax would score three runs in the bottom of the first for a 3-1 lead. The Mounties made it a 5-3 lead thanks to an inside-the-park home run to centerfield by Trace Wertz and a sacrifice fly.
In the bottom of the fifth, Cohen Bechtel connected on a triple to bring in two runs and tie it up at 5-all.
The Mounties would take the lead in the top of the seventh with an error allowing a run to score.
While Zahurak won the game with his bat in the seventh, he also picked up a win in the circle as the relief pitcher gave up just one hit and one unearned run in to innings of work. South’s Chance Quimby received the loss as he went 1 1/3 innings of relief, giving up two runs, one of which was earned.
Zahurak ended the day going 2 for 3 to lead Halifax’s offense.
South Williamsport’s offense was led by senior Trace Wertz, who went 3 for 4 in his final game with three RBIs, a home run and a run scored. Garrett Lorson went 2 for 2 with two RBIs, Kamdyn Bubb went 1 for 3, Torin Haug was 1 for 4 with an RBI, Marc Molina went 1 for 3 with a run scored, Cole Gerber went 1 for 3 and Levi Butler went 1 for 3 with a run scored.
