They played at different high schools but long shared the same dream. Both soon will live it when they play Division I softball next spring.
Still, Montoursville graduate Kayleigh Sheleman and Jersey Shore grad Dani Miller shared one final memorable high school moment together Wednesday evening at Elm Park. For one last time, two of their school’s most decorated hitters dazzled while owning their final high school moments.
Sheleman, headed to Massachusetts, earned District 4 Senior All-Star Game MVP honors, collecting three hits, two RBIs and two runs as Team Lorson (coached by Jersey Shore’s Chris Lorson) split two games with Team Hernandez (coached by Mifflinburg’s Ron Hernandez). Miller, who will play at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, also produced three hits, scored twice and stole three bases as Team Hernandez took the first game, 8-2 in five innings and Team Lorson the second, 10-2 in four innings.
Williamsport third baseman Emma Vollman, playing for Team Hernandez, earned Defensive MVP, headlining her effort with a fabulous catch halfway toward home in foul territory as she crashed into the fence. She also reached base three times, hit a single, scored twice and stole two bases.
“For me, it was a lot of fun to play, obviously, with the girls on my team one last time and getting to play with other girls, too, that I’ve played with since I was 10 years old,” Sheleman said after going 3 for 4 with a double. “Getting back together one last time before we all go our separate ways was really cool.”

“I enjoyed getting to play with other girls. We were talking in there that there are six or seven of us who have played together since we were 10,” Miller said. “It was cool to come back one last time. It was definitely a lot of fun.”
Sheleman and Miller helped their teams have a lot of fun the past four years. Sheleman topped 100 career hits and RBIs despite missing most of her freshman season with a torn ACL. Miller is up high on the all-time District 4 career hits list with 136 and was one of the district’s best lead-off hitters the past four seasons. Sheleman helped usher in one of Montoursville’s best four-year runs during the 2000s and Miller was a two-time district champion, playing in three finals.
Sheleman was to the third spot what Miller was to lead-off and embraced that role again, hitting safely in both games. She capped her strong outing with a two-run double which highlighted a seven-run fourth inning for Team Lorson in the second game.
Miller had two hits in the opener and stole three bases before also hitting a single and scoring again during that fourth inning eruption.
“We were just getting out there and going,” Sheleman said. “In my last game here, I ended with a walk, so it was nice to go out with a hit in my last high school game.”

“It was one last game to go out and have fun and play with my teammates and friends,” Miller said. “You just go out there and let it fly.”
That mentality served both teams well, as Team Hernandez erased a 2-0 deficit with an eight-run, fourth inning explosion in the opener. Bucktail’s Lola English went 2 for 3 with an RBI, while Taylor Stewart’s RBI double and Addyson Diltz’s two-run single put Team Hernandez ahead to stay. Jenna Robaczewski earned the win in relief, throwing two scoreless innings and Williamsport’s Brenna Beck reached base twice, drawing two walks, scoring and driving in a run.
Team Lorson started strong in the second game, scoring three runs in the first two innings before Team Hernandez crept within, 3-2 in the third. That momentum, however, was short-lived as seven players collected hits during the seven-running inning which put Team Lorson up, 10-2.
Montoursville’s Emily George reached three times, going 1 for 1 with a walk and two runs. Williamsport’s Ashlyn Robinson and Jersey Shore’s Lynna Clark combined on a three-hitter and Bucktail’s Eva Sockman singled for a second straight game.
Only two fabulous catches in deep center field by South Williamsport’s Mikaiya Hills prevented Miller from generating a five-hit, two-game performance. She singled in her last at-bat before Sheleman belted a two-run double.

It was a fitting curtain call for two players who relentlessly worked to build the kinds of high school resumes most only dream about. They held a softball dream since they were Little Leaguers and will start living the dream in a few months.
How they reached that point has a lot to do with immense talent. But it has a lot more to do with an insatiable desire to improve and relentless work ethics.
The book has closed on their fabulous high school careers. Now, neither can wait to start writing their next one.
“I’m super excited. I’m playing summer ball and getting out and getting ready to go,” Sheleman said. “I know what I have to do. I have to go out and earn my spot but I’m ready for it.”
“I’m excited. I’m ready to see what the next chapter holds,” Miller said. “That was always my dream since I was little. To be able to do that shows that the hard work is not done.”
