Team chemistry helped Williamsport softball secure District 2-4 three-peat

Williamsport players enjoy the action as each game progresses. Being there elicits smiles and good feelings.

And that’s just in the Millionaire dugout.

Whether on the field or in that dugout, Williamsport players are savoring the moments. Those are the places to be, where positivity reigns and where it’s all for one and one for all.

“It’s super fun. It’s all smiles,” third baseman Emma Vollman said. “There is no better feeling than coming into the dugout. Everyone is smiling; everyone is cheering.”

A team featuring numerous honor roll students certainly has aced chemistry this season. That is a major reason Williamsport three-peated as District 2-4 Class AAAAAA champions, routing West Scranton, 9-1 last Thursday. The Millionaires (18-3) added that title to the repeat HAC-I crown they earned earlier this season and have increased the team’s win total for a second straight season.

Yes, Williamsport is a talented, deep and hard-working team. But it’s hard to win when players are on a different page. Here, everyone is reading the same book at the same time. Williamsport is a good team but also a connected team which opens the state tournament this afternoon at Millionaire Mountain when it plays South Western.

“You could have an all-star team out there, but if we don’t go out there and don’t like each other; don’t play together, and don’t pick each other up, you’re not going to win any championships,” Williamsport coach Scott Stugart said. “It doesn’t take much to spark this team because they like each other; they believe in each other and they are happy for each other. They want each other to succeed.”

“I’m so lucky to be able to play with such a great group of girls,” center fielder Kinsley Cannode said. “It’s so fun. I’m so happy we won for our seniors and that we did it again.”

Williamsport rallied late in the season to make a surprising championship run two years ago before winning 17 games and dominating the field en route to a repeat crown last spring. There is a strong mix of seniors and juniors, but the team also has added excellent younger players these past two seasons.

Those additions have only enhanced the team’s chemistry as well as its production. Williamsport has proven as resilient as it is talented, staging several impressive comeback wins the past two years, including three straight to open this season. Momentum, trust and belief flow from one player to the next and all those ingredients have created a championship formula.

“We have a team chemistry like no other team I’ve ever played on,” pitcher Ashlyn Robinson said. “We have this chemical reaction when if one girl does well, the other ones want to do well for the rest of the team as well. With that continuous flow of back-to-back achievements, it helps keep moving from there.”

Listen to the Williamsport dugout on a regular basis and one cannot tell whether the Millionaires are winning or losing. The team remains upbeat and loud at all times. That was the case when Loyalsock stormed back in the season opener and tied the game in the seventh inning; the same when Mifflin County built a six-run lead two days later and when Central Mountain opened a four-run advantage less than a week after.

They may have been trailing in two games and momentum may have transferred against Loyalsock, but Williamsport maintaining both its belief and positive energy helped turn the tide every time. The Millionaires walked off with 6-5 and 9-8 wins against Loyalsock and Mifflin County before surging past Central Mountain, 8-6.

Those wins set the season’s tone and also reinforced how valuable this team chemistry is. There are no stats for that attribute but the results speak for themselves. It’s certainly a lot more inspiring being around people who believe in all so much. It’s certainly a lot more enjoyable when all are embracing the challenges together with a strong collective mindset.

“We make sure everyone is up the entire game,” shortstop Brenna Beck said. “We make we’re in the game the whole time; we’re all cheering. It’s so much fun being in this dugout.”

“It’s crazy,” Vollman said. “The noise in the dugout, especially over the last few games, has been really special.”

That has helped lay the foundation for what has become a special season. And for seniors Beck, Robinson, Vollman and Bella Reddy they get one last memory standing alongside their teammates in that dugout this afternoon.

Sure, Williamsport wanted that district championship bad. But maybe just as much, the Millionaires wanted what that title would bring–one last home game. Because more than medals and trophies, this team simply loves playing together and for each other above all else.

“That’s so exciting,” Cannode said. “Having our last home game of the season and getting to enjoy it with my teammates is awesome.”

“Millionaire Mountain is something I’ll always remember and hold close to my heart,” Robinson said. “That’s another opportunity to be there and experience it with all my teammates.”
