Williamsport has a boxing champion, and he is bringing the title back home from Delhi, India.
Williamsport's James Earle won the NBA World Global Lightweight Championship at Gohana Harvana, India on the Fourth of July, securing his first championship. The Williamsport native defeated Arun Verma and won the title with a knock out in the fifth round 42 seconds in to move to 13-0 with 11 wins by knock out.
In an interview for a segment entitled "James Earle: The Fresh Prince," the Williamsport native discussed the fight beforehand.
"I like to relax when I fight. A lot of people say it doesn't even look like you're fighting because you're so relaxed. But I'm a relaxed person in any situation normally," Earle said in 'James Earle: The Fresh Prince.' "The best part about it is it's in India, 1.4 billion people, and I'm trying to go global and worldwide, not just in the United States."
"Of course I got power but like I always say, right hand can take you around the block, but the jab will take you around the world," Earle said in 'James Earle: The Fresh Prince.' "Staying focused, staying sharp, staying dedicated and having that discipline. You can have motivation but that motivation doesn't last long. You have to have that discipline to keep going."
The fight against Verma was Earle's second fight this year. He defeated Angelo Arguello in Discoteca La Tarima, Puerto Colombia in April. Earle's first fight was in October of 2019 against Edgar Garcia Bram.
"It's going to mean a lot honestly, I feel like its just the beginning really," Earle said in 'James Earle: The Fresh Prince' regarding his fight with Verma. "I just love to fight."
Earle worked with Roy Jones Jr. and also received some training from former boxing great Mike Tyson.
And winning the NBA World Global Lightweight Championship is likely just the beginning of Earle's journey to keep improving and getting better as a professional boxer.
