Thanks to a dominant seven inning start from Ryker Walton, supported by the offense, the Williamsport Crosscutters saw their magic number in the MLB Draft League second-half championship drop to just one with a 5-1 victory over the State College Spikes on Sunday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Walton threw 110 pitches, 64 for strikes, over seven innings to secure the win and move to 4-3 in what would likely be his final outing of the year. He allowed just one run on four hits with three walks and eight strikeouts, dropping his season ERA to 5.48. Brandon Scott allowed just one Spikes baserunner on a walk over the final two innings and struck out two to close out the game in a non-save situation.
Jack Kail led the offense with three. RBIs with one coming on a fielder's choice where everyone was safe and the other two from a 395-foot home run into the bleachers in left field, his second home run of the season. Matthew Williams has the other extra-base hit with his tenth double of the season on a 1 for 2 night with two walks and two runs.
Nicholas Romano went 2 for 5 with an RBI and Trey Wells was 1 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored. Chris Stanfield, despite being 0 for 2, reached base all five times he was at the plate thanks to three walks and two Spikes errors, scoring a run.
The six-game series shifts back to Bowman Field on Monday in the Cutters' regular-season home finale.
