Williamsport's boys soccer team opened the season with a 3-1 win against Reading on Saturday afternoon. Connor Hofstrom had a pair of goals while Brayden Ungard assisted on both. Isaac Balza had an unassisted goal for the Millionaires. Mark Castro scored Reading's goal.
Both Williamsport and Reading had seven shots on goal and in goal, Max Fink had six saves to help Williamsport open the year 1-0.
Loyalsock earned a 5-2 win against Jersey Shore thanks to four second-half goals. Loyalsock led 1-0 early before heading into the half tied at 1-1.
Caleb Hartsock, Wesley Johnson, Isaac Stiger, Gabriel Mauro and Luke Edmonds all scored goals for the Lancers while Kason Burrows had three saves. Loyalsock out-shot the Bulldogs as well, 19-6.
Jersey Shore held a brief 2-1 lead before the Lancers rallied.
Warrior Run earned a season-opening 6-1 win over Shikellamy. The Defenders scored four first-half goals as Gideon Kennel scored three goals with an assist, Ryan Kemock had a pair of goals and an assist and Carter McCormick added a goal.
Wellsboro opened the season in dominating fashion, cruising past Wyalusing, 11-0. Wellsboro scored six goals in the first half and put the mercy-rule into effect early in the second.
The Green Hornets were led by Gabe Cuneo's hat trick while Jacob Smith had a pair of goals and Mason Brill, James Doughtie, Liam Stevens Coen Tennis, Kayden Pearson and Stephen Poirier all scored.
Galeton defeated North Penn-Liberty thanks to a four-goal first half. Max Schloegel scored twice while David Martin, Ransom Schultz and Treyton Sykora all recorded goals.
• Muncy's girls soccer season opened with a tough 2-1 loss to Milton on the road. Muncy tied the game in the 73rd minute when Ava Eyer scored off an assist by Harleigh Miller, but just four minutes later, Makayla Wolfe put in a goal to seal the one-goal victory.
In goal, Hailey Ganoe recorded 10 saves.
After Haylie Smith scored a goal seven minutes into the second half to tie the game for Wellsboro, Hughesville responded with two goals in a seven-minute span to reclaim the lead and held on from there for a 5-3 road win against the Green Hornets.
Kat Temple scored twice to lead the Spartans and Jaysa Kiess, Bella Young and Kendall Hamm scored goals. The Spartans out-shot Hughesville, 18-6.
Wellsboro's goals came from Haylie Smith (two) and Shaina Harrison.
"We're obviously disappointed with the result because I'm not a coach who believes in moral victories, but our girls deserve a tremendous amount of credit for the way they competed this morning," Wellsboro coach Michael Reese said.
Wellsboro had previously been outscored in its past six meetings with the Spartans, 35-0.
"We also lost a key piece of our defense to injury before the game, and two freshmen center backs stepped into those roles and did an excellent job against a very good Hughesville team," Reese said. "Haylie (Smith) continued to lead our attack wtih two goals and Shaina (Harrison) scored her first-ever varsity goal, which was a great moment for her and the team."
Ella Brelsford and Breah Philips both scored goals to give Williamsport a 3-2 season-opening win on the road at Dallas. Williamsport's other goal came via own goal. Kathryn Shultz had an assist for the Millionaires. In goal, both Valerie Beiter and Hannah Baird recorded one save each.
Mackenzie Miller scored twice and Madelyn Hughes dished out three assists as Loyalsock scored three goals in the second half for a 3-0 win against Troy. Loyalsock out-shot Troy, 18-8, and in goal, Ava Deknecht had a strong season-opening debut for the year with eight saves to record the shutout.
Juniata earned a 5-1 win against Sullivan County. The Griffins' Quinn Pennella scored off an assist by Bailey Bogart.
Lewisburg and Berwick had a 2-2 draw in their season openers on Saturday. The Green Dragons had goals by Payton Spigelmyer and Maddy Schwartz. Kinlee Lytle had an assist on Schwartz's goal.
• Montgomery secured a 4-1 win in girls tennis against Wllsboro. Arianna Snyder defeated Piper Anderegg 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) at No. 2 singles and Montgomery's Avelyn Moore beat Serenty Mosher 7-4, 6-7 (3-7), 10-4. Wellsboro's win came at No. 1 singles where Amanda Gonclaves beat Emily Miller, 6-1, 6-1.
Muncy defeated North Penn-Liberty, 4-1. That included a sweep by the Indians in singles competition. Zoe Dohl won at No. 1 singles over Marissa Bradford, 6-0, 6-0; Lola Fox beat Khloe Heichle at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-1; and at No. 3 singles it was Elizabeth Howard securing a 6-2, 6-0 win against Caorline Cummings.
Montoursville blanked Mifflinburg, 5-0. Elsa Kerher won at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-4 an at No. 2 singles, Bella Wanner picke dup a 6-0, 6-2 win. Makenna Vought won at No. 3 singles, 6-1, 6-3.
In doubles competition, Mya Wilson and Sydney Kuntz beat Megan Blake and Mary Turner, 6-1, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Analiese Crossen and Brielle Twigg beat Peyton Schlegel and Ava Yoder, 6-0, 6-0.
Two Hughesville's teams won thrilling three-set matches to help the Spartans rally past South Williamsport and win an exciting match, 3-2. At No. 1 doubles, Naomi Frey and Isabella Olfsheskie stormed back from a set down, taking the final two, 6-2, 6-1. Olivia Kile and Micayla Applegate dropped a second set at No. 2 doubles, but bounced right back and took the decider, 10-7. Caroline Hicks won in straight sets at No. 2 singles for the Spartans. Mylee Morrison won in straight sets for South at No. 1 singles and Ava Foote took a three-set match at No. 3 singles.
• North Penn-Liberty fell to Towanda in girls volleyball action, 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-14). Lilly McNamara had 14 digs while Maddie McNamara had seven and Gabby Bubeck recorded four. Maddison Smith had 13 assists and Lilly McNamara contributed 11 kills.
• Mansfield's women's soccer team lost to No. 17th-ranked Shepherd, 3-0. Angel Gule had seven saves in goal and Addison Emenheiser and Aaliyah Stocks led Mansfield with two shots on goal apiece. The Mounties defense played strong in the first half, keeping the Rams at just one goal through the first 45 minutes.
• The Lock Haven volleyball team fell to Lewis University in non-conference action to conclude its weekend of competition at the D'Youville Tournament in Buffalo, New York. Lewis (3-0) defeated Lock Haven (1-3), 3-0, winning by set scores of 25-21, 25-16 and 25-21.
Lock Haven's cleanest set came in the third, where the Bald Eagles finished with a team-best .308 hit percentage.
Gracelyn Wolzen led the Bald Eagles offensively with nine kills, while Maddy Fox added eight kills and Payton Stanton chipped in six. Natalie Gibson directed the Lock Haven offense with 27 assists.
