Area’s 3 undefeated teams remain at top of Week 3 power rankings

By Chris Masse 4 min read
MARK NANCE/Sun-Gazette Correspondent Kash Herritt and Jersey Shore are one of three area teams who enter Week 3 undefeated along with Williamsport and Montgomery.

1. Jersey Shore (2-0): Last year marked just the second time in 13 seasons that Jersey Shore and Selinsgrove did not square off in the playoffs. The 2020 season was the only other time that happened during this stretch. In those previous 11 playoff encounters, Jersey Shore holds a 7-4 advantage, five wins coming in the championship.

2. Williamsport (2-0): Williamsport is averaging more than 500 yards per game multiple games into the season. The last time that happened came in 2016 when the Millionaires reached the 6A state quarterfinals. The offensive coordinator that year? You guessed it, current head coach Kevin Brown.

3. Montgomery (2-0): Canton became just the third team to reach double figures against Montgomery in its last 11 games. The starting unit allowed just one score, however, and no team since Week 2 of last year has scored more than 20 points against the Red Raiders.

4. Montoursville (1-1): Few teams have started the season with a tougher District 4 schedule than Montoursville. Whatever happens tonight, this three-game stretch could serve as a springboard moving forward because this team will be as battle-tested as any if faces here on out.

5. Warrior Run (2-0): Just four years ago, Warrior Run snapped the district’s longest losing streak. Since then, it has become a perennial title contender and enters tonight’s game having won eight straight regular season games. Since the start of the 2024 postseason, the Defenders are 16-3.

6. South Williamsport (2-0): Dominik Goode was very good last year. Get it? He’s been great through two games this season. The junior linebacker has three sacks, an interception and has emerged as one of the area’s premier defensive playmakers.

7. Loyalsock (1-1): Ivan Baker has been a tackling machine these first two weeks. That the safety has been involved in 33 tackles is impressive enough. But it’s the 29 solos which really stand out. The gives this Niners fan some Ronnie Lott vibes.

8. Milton (1-1): When Milton wins, it does so via shutout. Seriously. Starting last year, all four Milton wins have been shutouts. That highlights the exciting playmakers this unit possesses and points to a team on the rise, although it has its hands full tonight.

9. Muncy (1-1): Could first-time starting quarterbacks Noah Weikle and Noah Walters become dual 1,000-yard passers? It is quite a rare occurrence, happening only twice in the District 4 during the 2000s. But Muncy is one of those teams to achieve it. Coleman Good and Kolby Moyer both topped 1,000 yards in 2018 when the Indians captured the first of three straight District 4 Class A championships.

10. Wellsboro (1-1): Grady Morral is the latest in his family to make an impact at Wellsboro. His father Chris excelled there before becoming coach; older brother Griffin has gone over 2,500 career passing yards early in his junior year and now Grady is carrying on the tradition. The freshman came up huge against CV last week, returning a kickoff 84 yards for the clinching touchdown.

11. Lewisburg (0-2): Not a lot went right offensively at Shikellamy, but the defense provided a silver lining. It’s not just that the Dragons held a potent unit to 14 points until late in the game. It was that the defense also forced four turnovers, consistently providing comeback opportunities.

12. Canton (1-1): Canton has a shot at getting some revenge tonight. Wyalusing has blown it out the last two years, scoring 96 points in those games. Look for a charged-up defense to be eager to change this rivalry’s recent complexion.

13. Hughesville (0-2): The offensive potential is there. Hughesville showed promise early in the opener against Montgomery. It’s been a rough go since then, but there is nowhere to go but up.

14. Central Mountain (0-2): They want more than moral victories, obviously, but the Wildcats have been in both their games going into the fourth quarter. Strides are being made. A year ago, Central Mountain did not score a touchdown until Week 5 and now they already have done so on offense, defense and special teams.

15. Cowanesque Valley (0-2): Considering the injury problems CV has endured, last week’s performance at Wellsboro was pretty impressive. Coach Jacob Lane has built a quality foundation in Westfield and CV has either been ahead or within one score deep into the fourth quarter of its first two games.

16. North Penn-Mansfield (0-2): Special teams sure create some big plays in Blossburg. Bentley Chilson returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown last week, making it the fifth time in the last 12 games that a Panther has taken a kick to the end zone. North Penn-Mansfield also has a punt return touchdown during that stretch.

17. Bucktail (0-2): The Bucks are idle this week but keep pounding on that rock. A team searching for its first on-the-field victory since 2023 has been pretty close the first two weeks. That rock is going to split soon and the future looks bright for this hard-working team.
