EWING, N.J. - Junior Aidan Barlett, a Hughesville graduate, had an interception and a fumble recovery that he returned for a 20-yard touchdown with 48 seconds left to seal a 17-7 win for the Lycoming College football team over TCNJ on Saturday at Lions Stadium.
The Warriors (1-0) held the ball for 34:20, including marching on a 15-play, 48-yard drive that ate 7 minutes, 11 seconds in the fourth quarter to nearly ice the game away. The drive stalled at the four-yard line, though, as a touchdown pass was negated by a holding penalty on fourth down.
That led to one more chance for TCNJ (0-1) with 1:31 left, but facing 4th-and-8 from the TCNJ 16-yard line, junior Khalil Johnson forced a fumble at the 20 that Barlett scooped up and ran into the end zone to make it 17-7. Junior Nasir Shakur had a sack on the play after the kickoff to all but ice the game.
Senior Terrence Micah Oliver posted 28 carries for 115 yards, leaving him with 3,125 rushing yards, 21 from Josh Kleinfelter's mark of 3,156 set from 2007-10, and third in school history. Senior Brendan Clark, a Loyalsock graduate, caught six passes for 71 yards and senior Spencer Ferguson caught three passes for 13 yards and a touchdown and rushed nine times for 39 yards. Junior Joe Lyons III finished 19 of 28 for 155 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions.
Johnson paced the defense with nine tackles, 1.5 for loss, a sack, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a final drive breakup. Senior JayVon Story added eight tackles, 1.5 for loss and sophomore Yahseam Stokes added five stops, two for loss.
The Warriors score on their first two drives of the game to take a 10-0 lead. Sophomore Trinity Hill-Caleb (Suitland, Md./Suitland) forced a fumble at the TCNJ 24 that Johnson fell on. Seven plays later, Lyons found Ferguson for a 14-yard touchdown pass. After a 3-and-out, the Warriors got the ball at their own 31-yard line, they marched 64 yards in 15 plays, reaching the five-yard line before sophomore Vasco Granitto hit a 22-yard field goal.
Lycoming racked up 316 yards of total offense and 20 first downs, while limiting TCNJ to 127 yards and 10 first downs.
A second-quarter interception helped the Lions to their only score, with Sam Dech scoring from four yards out to cap a 25-yard drive.
Dech led the Lions' offense, running 14 times for 65 yards and Raymend Lao was 6-of-13 for 44 yards with an interception. Albert D'Alessandro III led the defense with 12 tackles and Sean Gallagher had two interceptions.
The Warriors head home to host Montclair State, at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Sept. 12, at David Person Field at Girardi Stadium.
